FOXBORO - Tom Brady looked well-rested and relaxed during the first day of Patriots training camp. Yesterday, he told the media his mind, body, arm and ankle were all in great shape.

If you want the quarterback’s secret, he seems to have discovered a new formula to help get himself better prepared for the year ahead.

In fact, he claimed this was his best offseason yet, much of it spent away from the training room inside Gillette Stadium, where he pretty much has been a fixture during the past eight seasons.

The only trade-off?

For the first time anyone can remember, he lost his prime parking space as an offseason workout award winner.

“I gave it up. I didn’t compete for it this year,” Brady said. “I’m sure if I competed for it, I would have won. But I didn’t compete for it.”

The reason he didn’t vie for the yearly crown and coveted space can be explained by how he and his life have changed over time.

The Patriots quarterback did not openly bring up issues in his personal life - such as spending quality time with model girlfriend Gisele Bundchen, or bonding with his infant son John, who lives in California with Brady’s former girlfriend Bridget Moynahan.

Instead, he just left it for everyone to fill in the blanks.

“There’s other things that have come up in my life that I’ve had to make choices on,” Brady said. “One of the choices was to spend time away with things I don’t get the opportunity to do when I’m in the football season. It was not all vacation, though.”

Some fans might start worrying about Brady and his focus, but how can you really argue with a guy who just set the NFL record for touchdown passes in one season with 50 and led a record-setting offense?

Brady has merely evolved - from that kid who was drafted in the sixth round out of Michigan who eats, sleeps and drinks football 365 days a year, into a three-time Super Bowl champion who figured out he needs a break when the time calls for it.

He also has figured out he doesn’t need to throw the football in double sessions. One session will suffice, if that. It’s called pacing yourself for the regular season.

“Each year, I’ve learned something different. I think the goal this year isn’t to go out and see how sore my arm can get,” Brady said following the morning session, in which he threw sparingly. “I think for our team, it’s the same thing. The goal is to be ready in September, do whatever we need to do to get to that point, and that’s what our coach is going to put us through.”

Beyond his downtime, Brady was quizzed on a number of topics - including the threat of his team facing a Super Bowl hangover, his record-setting receiving corps a year later and how he felt about no longer having to face division foe and personal terror Jason Taylor on a regular basis.

The latter query drew the best out of Brady, who claimed he and left tackle Matt Light threw a celebration upon learning the news his pal Taylor had been traded from Miami to Washington.

“I think Light and I popped a cold beer when I saw the transaction,” Brady said. “We were the two most excited players in the NFL. We were hugging each other. That was awesome.”

As for the 17-14 Super Bowl loss to the Giants, and the long history of Super Bowl losers going on to have bad seasons the following year, Brady sounded like a true disciple of his coach when answering.

“We start by taking leadership from our head coach (Bill Belichick) and the example that he sets. I don’t think he is too concerned with what anybody did last year, including us,” Brady said. “He is concerned with what we did today and what we do tomorrow. That is where is all starts.”

Talk of Brady’s receiving corps focused on the element of familiarity the group now shares after a season of playing together.

“We now know what everybody can do. We know what everybody is capable of,” Brady said. “Last year when we broke the huddle, guys were running to the right or the left because that is where they had to go. They were trying to figure out how to run the routes and find out what I am looking for.

“Now when we get in the huddle, I tell Randy (Moss) what to do and he knows exactly what you are going to do,” Brady continued. “It is the same with Wes (Welker) and Jab (Gaffney). It is pretty much everybody. That leads to better execution. And if you can execute more consistently, then that

will help over the long term.”

While I'm on a rant. How big of dicks are the US Army for denying the kid the Lions drafted in the 7th rd from playing,or at least trying out for the team. First they said they would allow him to play,now they are going to make him serve. You would think that the Army could use some good pub'. Espicially after the Pat Tillman tragedy.

Williams Jr. to continue 'Monday Night Football'

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Hank Williams Jr., who has sung the opening theme for "Monday Night Football" since 1989, will continue the tradition this season.

ESPN spokesman Bill Hofheimer says Williams will again base the theme song on his hit "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight."

Williams is recording the tracks this week in Nashville, Tennessee, and will shoot the video next month in Los Angeles.

"Monday Night Football" kicks off its 39th season September 8th with a doubleheader: Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers followed by Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders.

The 59-year-old Williams continued doing the theme song when the show moved from ABC to ESPN in 2006.

His other hit singles include "Family Tradition," "A Country Boy Can Survive" and "Born to Boogie."

Falcons are already in and everyone has reported. No hold outs, thanks.

Huge loss.   Hampton may be a bigger part of the Steeler defense than Troy (puns intended, but true).

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- He didn't get his old locker or his old jersey number, but Grady Jackson is thrilled to be back with the Falcons.

The 345-pound defensive tackle signed a contract to return to the Falcons Tuesday afternoon. He originally signed with the club in 2006 but was abruptly released during the 2007 bye week. He went on to play in Jacksonville under now Falcons Head Coach Mike Smith and defensive line coach Ray "Sugar Bear" Hamilton.

With the coaching change, Atlanta became a perfect fit.

"I never had hard feelings," Jackson told reporters Tuesday. "It probably was bad the way (former head coach Bobby) Petrino did it. But it's his way... I'm back now and that's the good thing."

Jackson is an 11-year NFL veteran who has made stops with the Oakland Raiders (1997-2001), New Orleans Saints (2002-03), Green Bay Packers (2003-05), Falcons (2006-07, 2008) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2007). He has competed in 155 games while compiling 507 tackles (362 solo), 33.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and a blocked PAT (2002) and field goal (1997).

The defensive tackle adds immediate skill and depth to a defense he's familiar with.

"This is where I wanted to be at and I wanted to come here with the guys I've played with... I feel like I can make an impact with them," Jackson said. "It feels great. It's the same defense we had in Jacksonville. It's a defense I know and I can go ahead and play ball."

Pro Bowl defensive end John Abraham said he lobbied for Smith to bring Jackson.

"It gives us a great centerpiece," Abraham said. "Grady was here last year and through divine intervention he's back. I think everyone is happy. I know the fans are happy. I know the team is happy. We just want to see him get on the field and do what he did last year before his early departure."

Smith said Jackson gives the Falcons a lineman ale to "gobble up space."

“I’ve been around guys that weigh in Grady’s range," the coach said. "In Baltimore we had the big tackles. He gobbles up space. He’s going to gobble up at least two blocks on plays. It’s going to allow other players to be free. When you design a defense you try to get an unblocked defender at the point of attack and he’ll help us in that way. "

Jackson will be on the practice field Wednesday in jersey No. 91.

Nice to see some other AFCN fans here (rob, keef, moonie, etc), not so nice to see some others (K2Dud), but GK, the Ravens 2 starting OT's are questionable and/or injured already, so I'm not expecting much more than a .500 season, probably good enough for 2nd place behind Pitt's 9-7.  Should be a fun season, though, playing against the AFC South and NFC East (meaning lots of visiting fans, like the Deadskins' and Shegles', at the games!)

HOSCHTON, Ga. -- Roddy White caught two touchdown passes from two different quarterbacks but it was the Falcons defense that won the first Friday Night Lights scrimmage at Mill Creek High School.

The inter-squad game -- the first event of Allstate All-Access Weekend -- drew more than 10,200 fans to this suburban Atlanta stadium. Head Coach Mike Smith developed a unique scoring system for the scrimmage, which came down to the final play.

With the score tied at 28 Smith offered to award the game-winning point to the side that converted on fourth-and-4. Quarterback Joey Harrington broke the huddle, took the snap and faced pressure from the defense. His pass fell incomplete, giving the defense the victory in what could be the first of many preseason matches under the Friday night lights.

"This was a great crowd," Smith said in a post-scrimmage address to the stadium. "I appreciate you coming out."

Smith and the team's four quarterbacks wore microphones for the event. The offense and defense faced off in separate series begining with the two first teams going head-to-head. A kickoff return for a touchdown by Jerious Norwood brought the crowd to its feet, but first-teamers practicing against each other in a live scrimmage added an electric atmosphere.

Players were thrilled with the support and happy to bring back some of their own high school memories.

"This is probably the nicest football facility I've seen," rookie quarterback Matt Ryan said. "It's a lot of fun for us to get out here tonight."

"I didn't know the fans would be out here with so much enthusiasm," added running back Michael Turner. "It feels good to be back playing football on a Friday night."

The offense started slow and quarterback Chris Redman's second pass was intercepted by linebacker Michael Boley (a three-point play under Smith's scoring system). But the team's balanced out as the scrimmage continued.

Harrington led a scoring drive finished off with the first of two White touchdown grabs. Ryan opened the second half with the first-team offense and promptly hooked up with White on a 60-yard bomb for a score.

Fans were also treated to halftime contest, frisbee dog performances, a skydiving team and fireworks. The Falcons will also host a free event tomorrow at the Georgia Dome. Roam the Dome will feature a mock game and glimpses of the team's newly-renovated home.

But it will be tough to top the passion of playing on Friday night.

"Our guys have come out and competed every day," Smith said. "I'm really excited about our guys. They're excited about the game of football and they're great to be around."

Other highlights and news from the field included:

Ryan got his first work of the evening with the second-team offense only he had to work against the first-string defense. His first play of the evening was a play-action pass under pressure from Boley. The quarterback was flagged for intentional grounding.
Chevis Jackson worked as the first-team nickel back.
Rookie defensive end Kroy Biermann got the first sack of scrimmage, exploding over the right side and sending Shockley running out of the pocket.
Chauncey Davis picked up a point for the defense with a sack of Redman.
Jamaal Anderson picked up a sack and forced a fumble; he swatted the ball out of Redman's extended throwing hand (a four-point play).
Fireworks came out again when Shockley hit Jason Snelling on a short pass on the next series. The second-year man sprinted down the sideline for what appeared to be a 60-yard touchdown. But Smith called the play back on a holding penalty.

The Falcons should be forced to play on Fridays because they will be a high school caliber team this year.

This ain't bingin' Mike Vick back.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)—The bond between Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers appears to be broken beyond repair.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday evening that after approximately six hours of what he called “brutally honest” conversations with Favre over the past two days, the three-time MVP just isn’t in the right mind-set to be part of the team.

Even with the chance to win his starting job back potentially on the table, McCarthy said Favre couldn’t seem to get past emotional wounds that were opened as tensions mounted in recent weeks.

“The football team’s moving forward,” McCarthy said. “The train has left the station, whatever analogy you want. He needs to jump on the train and let’s go. Or, if we can’t get past things that have happened, I have to keep the train moving.”

McCarthy said he and Favre made plans to speak later Tuesday evening, but McCarthy didn’t seem to allow for the possibility that anything significant would change.


A trade could be coming next, with Tampa Bay re-emerging as a potential destination after seemingly being eliminated from consideration in recent weeks.

Packers officials have believed throughout the past month that Favre’s preference is to play for the Minnesota Vikings, but Favre could reconsider a trade to Tampa Bay—or elsewhere—if Green Bay holds firm in its commitment not to trade him to a division rival.

McCarthy wouldn’t address trade talks, but did say a quick resolution to the situation is important to the rest of his players.

“Absolutely,” McCarthy said. “The players, they want it resolved. Even talk to Brett about it—he feels bad about it. It’s time for them to talk about somebody else.”

Favre left Lambeau Field just before Packers practice Tuesday afternoon, taking a right turn out of the stadium’s back gate and heading away from the field where the rest of his teammates were assembling for drills.

Favre emerged from the stadium’s loading dock exit at 2:34 p.m. EDT Tuesday, hugging Packers senior security advisor Jerry Parins before getting in his SUV and driving away. Shortly after, an SUV driven by Packers general manager Ted Thompson left the gate heading in the same direction.

“We’re at a stalemate,” Favre told ESPN Tuesday morning. “Mike and I both agreed last night that me being out there is a distraction and will continue to be a distraction. We all know the reason I’m here is because the commissioner reinstated me so we have a lot of things to figure out. It’s simple and complicated, both at the same time.”

McCarthy said Favre was excused from practice Tuesday, adding that he wouldn’t have practiced with the team anyway because of an abdominal strain found in his physical examination Monday. McCarthy did not say whether Favre would be fined if he stayed away from camp starting Wednesday.

Favre told ESPN he doesn’t have a problem with competing with Rodgers for the starting job, and can “truly understand” why McCarthy would make Rodgers the starter. But Favre also said a competition “probably isn’t going to work” and that “the problem is that there’s been a lot of damage done and I can’t forget it.”

Did Favre not feel wanted or welcome enough by the Packers?

“That’s part of the issue with him, quite frankly,” McCarthy said. “And listening to him talk about that, you respect his opinion. And frankly, I told him, I said, ‘I’ll take responsibility because I have a voice in the building.’ I never thought he truly was going to play. I thought he was emotionally driven for other reasons.”

McCarthy said Favre was “very convincing” in their conversations about his desire to play Monday night and Tuesday. But McCarthy still seemed to have reservations about Favre’s commitment to preparation.

Would Favre continue to stay at Lambeau late at night to study film, a major factor in his success last season?

“That was a very good question for him,” McCarthy said. “He’s in a tough spot right now.”

McCarthy also didn’t seem convinced that Favre was thinking clearly about his future.

“He has a lot going through his head, and I think he’s emotional,” McCarthy said. “And just talking to him, he’s in a tough spot.”

So, of course, are McCarthy and Thompson. Correctly or not, they might end up being seen by fans as the men who drove Favre out of Green Bay.

“That’s not a good feeling, but I don’t view it that way,” McCarthy said. “I can only trust the truth. I’ve been part of a lot of conversations, and I don’t feel that’s the case.”

Rodgers, meanwhile, stuck to his mantra of not worrying about things he can’t control.

“I just know we were out at practice today, and he wasn’t there, and I’m the starter,” Rodgers said. “So that’s where we’re going right now.”

Speaking to reporters after Tuesday’s practice, Rodgers stood just a few feet away from a locker with a “FAVRE” nameplate above it, stocked with shoulderpads and other equipment. It hadn’t been used—and now might never be.

Cornerback Charles Woodson had a hard time imagining the Packers trading such an iconic player.

“Everything went kind of sour a few weeks or a month back, but you never felt like it would get to the point or to the talks of him actually being traded,” Woodson said. “I felt once he stepped back in here, he would be the quarterback. Him not being here today, I guess management has a different route. So at that point, we’ve got to go out and do our job.”
