I wish Tell Me Straigh was longer, it could have been like Thru and Thru...but I love it either way, it's so beautiful, Keith's voice sounds amazing and the lyrics seem heartfelt, even if Keith told Howard Stern it's about "fake news"...lol whom is he trying to kid, it definitely feels personal...he obviously just doesn't wanna talk about it and that's fine, he doesn't have to

It's also very nice to hear Mick and him sing such beautiful harmony on it and on some other songs on the album <3

Angry - I’m still taking the piss. Fuck yes

Get Close - nice opening and funky grove. I was worried Jagger would have dumb stupid lyrics. I’m happy he’s making me cringe. Wow, those horns.

Depending on You - a ballad? God I hold my breathe. Stones ballads can be hard for me to like. Ok, this is good. It’s building and what great lyrics. Too young, too old. Makes me feel old/new memories of lovers. This ballad is good. Hats off to Ronnie guitar work.

Bite My Head Off - Are you fucking kidding me! Crunchy guitars. This is what my anger sounds like. Perfect rock and roll song. I was a dog…. Yeh boyeeeeee. A shark lyric to redeem Sparks will fly, sharks will cry.

Whole Wide World- jumps right into it. Guitars and vocals. Loving jaggers accent on this song. I can relate to these lyrics. Being alone and in trouble. We’ve all been there before. The riff and lead together in the middle and then the build up while Jagger reminds me there’s hope.

Dreamy Skies - I feel like I walked in on the song. It’s as if it’s always been playing and we just showed up to hear it. Ronnie slide guitar sounds amazing. just like other country songs by the stones they seem to been built for this. Most importantly, for me, Mick is writing lyrics that goes so well with the music. They don’t feel forced. “I just got a break free from it all.” Man I can take that to the grave. It’s times like this, that I have to remind myself, Mick is an excellent musician, as well as Singer. Just him on harmonica alone he earns every bit of his excellent musicianship.

Mess it Up - Did they? Idk. I think I’ve read a few reviews that I’ve made this the weakest song on the record. I’m not sure how I feel about it because I don’t hate it, it’s the stones and I’ve been waiting for this. But the course is a little crazy for me. Hoping this grows on me more. But knowing that they recorded tons of songs, I can’t help but think is there a gem out there that’s sitting in the cans somewhere. With that said, I don’t hate this song. It’s a good song amongst great songs. But the course is pretty cheesy. And then the end that’s probably what I’m gonna love most about it. It’s got a funky beat and you can bug out to it.
The dorkiest part of this song for me is, in my head I can picture of people doing a 70s disco dance to this.

Live By Sword - The song with everybody. This was the one that made Keith almost cried during his Howard Stern interview. I can hear Elton on this one. I wasn’t totally digging this song at first, and then to slight fazing on the vocals really got me sucked in. Nice Judgey lyrics too. Whore/hardcore. Great rhyme. Oh, towards the end, it’s just booty shaken.

Driving Me too Hard - I just realize this album is flying by as this track starts. And I was hoping for something to grab me right away. But it’s not. Has another ballad feel. Jagger slipping into the course now, and it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. My thought again is just like with mess it up. Is this one of those songs that there was something better but we didn’t get it. It’s making me want to know what else is left over from the session.
I’m looking Mick. I don’t know what I did to you. But you did good on this album. OK now there’s guitar weaving and I really like that. So this song has some redemption.

Tell Me Straight- Haunting. If you don’t know, I’m a Keith Richards diehard. So when Keith is singing, it’s time to shut the fuck up.

Sweet Sounds of Heaven- i’ve listen to this song, more than any other song on the album. Due to its early release.
Immediately liked it a lot more than Angry. We’ve had the two to listen to for about a month. Every time I play this song, I have one of those near me to hear it, but I’ve never said anything about who it is or if they like it. I heard someone say something about this song being played in a church. I could picture this being played in some event, Jellicle Christian church, and I’m not even knowing that this is one of the most decadent rock bands it’s ever existed. That also sing a song sympathy for the Devil. Well, you got this song it’s about heaven. Gaga makes this song go from a perfect ten to put it on eleven and pull the knobs off.

Rolling Stones Blues- shut up. Cut it out. Is this really happening? I can’t believe in over 60 years. They’ve never recorded the song. I don’t even know if they’ve ever played it live. All I know is it seems like this should’ve been done sometime before I was born. But it still sounds fresh. It’s impossible to not like this. For me it’s impossible not to think of all the old blues musicians that came after this building up to these boys from England, discovering the blues and selling it back to us in America.

My summation. This just makes me want more. If you listen to this now, for the third time, I’m writing out the stupid little review, which is in a review, it’s just how this made me feel more than anything. I need another record by them already.

Polydor's Ali Tant on the Rolling Stones' incredible new LP: 'It will be a rocket for the catalogue'

Polydor’s head of marketing Ali Tant has spoken to Music Week about the the Rolling Stones’ campaign for Hackney Diamonds – their first album of original material in 18 years.

The Stones played a surprise show in New York last night at Racket NYC. The album launch featured a guest appearance by Lady Gaga during the encore.

The band have just unveiled their huge partnership with Spotify for the Stones lips logo on Barcelona shirts. It’s just one of many components to a global campaign that includes DSP partnerships, branding deals and international pop-up stores.

The Rolling Stones revealed their comeback plans with a Hackney Empire launch event last month, which was broadcast globally on YouTube. Lead single Angry became their first Top 40 hit since 2005.

Within the huge global campaign, there will be a lot of attention on the week one UK sales. The Stones’ 2016 covers album Blue & Lonesome was released in December that year and opened at No.1 with sales of 105,830.

Hackney Diamonds has been released alongside Polydor and Universal Music’s catalogue campaign for the band, following the release of 40 Licks on DSPs in the summer. It’s all part of a wider strategy to boost streaming for the band with big DSP partnerships set to roll out for the campaign.

“There is huge room for growth and I truly feel the quality of this album gives them a huge opportunity to do that,” said Ali Tant. “Alongside the new album we’re constantly looking for new initiatives to help grow catalogue streaming.

“We love working with the UMR team. Hannah [Neaves], Azi [Eftekhari] and the team have been fantastic on the Stones. We worked very closely on the Forty Licks campaign leading into the announcement of Hackney Diamonds, and we have further plans to continue to build the Stones’ catalogue later this year and into 2024.”

“Getting Forty Licks back out was really important for us as we’ve not had a compilation in the market that tied both ABKCO and the Stones’ post-1971 catalogue together for years,” added Tant. “There are various metrics we want to hit over the next 18 months but personally I’d like to get the Stones into the top 100 acts on Spotify off the back of Hackney Diamonds and keep them there!”

Here, Ali Tant reflects on working on one of the biggest albums in his label career and opens up about the long-term ambitions for Hackney Diamonds…

Looking back to the Hackney Empire launch event, how did that help to kickstart the global campaign?

“The launch was everything that we wanted and more. I didn't sleep really for about a week leading into it, because I was so so nervous, because it was so big. It's the biggest thing that I will ever do in my career bar none, in terms of a domestic act. The return of the biggest band of all time, arguably. YouTube has been, and will continue on this campaign, to be absolutely brilliant. We spoke to them about three months before the launch and went through what we wanted to achieve, which was essentially to create a TV show to launch the album campaign. Mick was very clear that he didn't want this to feel too British, which is why we brought Jimmy Fallon over. We wanted someone who actually had a strong social foothold, as well as being someone the band have got a relationship with and feel really comfortable chatting to. So whilst it was always going to launch in London and Hackney especially, it always needed to feel bigger than just a London launch, which is why we flew in a lot of media from around the world – the stalls were 70% international media.

“We had 188,000 people watch the livestream as it went out and then a further two million in the first 24 hours, which is incredible. The main views outside of the UK came from the US, Germany, Japan, France, South Korea, Brazil. Off the back of the launch, within 48 hours we had 10% growth on subscribers to the YouTube channel. We launched the Angry video, which did more in a day than Living In A Ghost Town has done in its life. That is testament to the song and video, but also testament to what YouTube have come to the table with. Their plan was pretty incredible.”

Angry became the Stones’ first Top 40 hit since 2005, is that a sign of how DPSs are embracing the campaign?

“I really wanted Angry to be a Top 40 single because I felt it could [do it]. There are very few older acts that can put a single in the Top 40 in the current climate, ABBA probably being the only other one in recent memory that have done it without a sync. The streaming on the track was really healthy, 60% of the consumption came from streams. It was quite fun listening to the Stones getting played on daytime Radio 1. Hearing Jack Saunders playing the Rolling Stones on the BBC Radio 1 Chart Show in full was very enjoyable. In Music Week, Alan Jones wrote that they are the first act to have a newly-recorded hit song over six different decades. It’s a very nice stat.”


So they are reaching a new audience this time around, as well as long-term fans?

“Yeah, completely. I mean, that's the whole point of this record. What’s very important to Mick is that we're not just hitting the same Stones fans they can hit week in, week out, it was about reaching new audiences. It's about not just new music but how can you future proof the catalogue, how can a younger generation of people discover the Stones? Angry is in the new EA Sports FC 24 video game. I wanted the song to be in a situation where it's heard without any bias. If a 15-year-old kid can hear the song not knowing it’s by the Rolling Stones, like the song and then realise it's the Rolling Stones, then for me that's a massive win.”

It sounds like it’s going to be a long campaign into 2024 that connects with the catalogue…

“Yeah, that was another thing that Mick was very vocal on. He didn't want this to be week one and done. We’ve got a really nice suite of formats. The aspiration is that it's going to be a big number for week one. But there's a lot more to come for week two, three, four, five. There’s a fair chunk of time going into the Christmas period, and there are still activations to happen between October and December as well.”

What's the potential for more hits, because it’s quite a diverse record in terms of styles?

“Angry was the first song that we heard, obviously it’s track one. It was always the first single, it set the tone for the record. It was the one that announced ‘we’re back’. There is no nuance to it, it's just a brilliant sounding Stones song. For me, the best song on the album is Sweet Sounds Of Heaven, which is the seven-and-a-half minute gospel-inspired track with Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder. When we sat down at Metropolis to listen to the album earlier in the year, that song especially, it knocks you off your feet. It’s not just a very good new Stones track, it’s up there with the best songs that they've ever made. It’s in the same sort of world as Gimme Shelter and Sympathy For The Devil.

“The album is extremely strong. I think Will Hodgkinson [in The Times] said it's their best album since Some Girls [1978], and he’s right. The third single is Mess It Up, which is one of the two songs that Charlie [Watts] plays drums on. That's kind of like a long lost relative of Miss You, it’s more disco-infused Stones. The album has got a bit of something for everyone. It's got the Rolling Stone blues cover at the end, it’s almost like going full circle. It's absolutely brilliant.”



With 12 tracks over 48 minutes, it’s a substantial new body of work…

“Yeah, you've got the more single tracks, Angry, Mess It Up, Depending On You, which is a really strong track that feels a little more fragile in terms of subject matter. It's about relationships, it's about friends, it's about the relationship that they've had with each other. When we sat down and heard the album in full, I wasn't sure what to expect. You go into these situations and you're nervous because you want it to be brilliant. You're also conscious that you're being looked at because your reaction to the songs is being monitored. But yeah, it was just incredible. I came out smiling for about four days.”

In terms of a career highlight, what was that like listening to the record with the band?

“It just didn't feel real. I've met a lot of people in my career, and I never take it for granted. I came back and told my wife, ‘I've just been sat in the studio listening to the record [with the Stones] and I can't tell anyone!’”

The UK is actually leading on this campaign, which is fantastic for an iconic British band. How are you working with international partners?

“The UK has, historically, always led on the Stones. The UK isn't necessarily the biggest market for the stones – arguably the US and Germany are bigger, Germany's a massive market for the Stones. The work that Victoria [Fonfe] and Nickie [Owen] do in the international team is incredible to make sure that everyone feels super-served and gets what they need. It's just been an absolute honour to work on this one. When Tom [March] went over to Geffen, it was a very natural place for the Stones to go. The Stones have been with Interscope anyway, so Tom, Adrian [Amodeo], Steve Berman [vice-chairman] and John Janick [CEO/chairman], are incredible and bring a huge amount to the campaign in terms of partnership activations.”


Although you said it’s not just a week one record, what ambitions do you have for the opening result, particularly with the vinyl?

“We’ve made sure that we've got a really good suite of products. Each key retailer has got their own exclusive, be it Amazon, HMV, indies, e-commerce, they all have exclusive products. I'm very intrigued to see how CDs sell on this record. Whatever people say about the CD market going into decline, the Stones audience always buck that trend. Yes, vinyl is going to do well on this record, but the CD is going to do very well. So we  needed to make sure that we had good products for both vinyl and CD.”


What do you think is going to be key to keeping this album going into next year? It sounds like the band are hungry for success as well…

“Yeah, they expect the best. They expect us to work really hard on it. They're working really hard as well. We're sort of getting into the plans for next year. But the plan really is that this is 18 months [of activity] that will keep this album buoyant – but not just the album it’s the catalogue as well. The Stones’ catalogue has ticked over nicely, it's done well. We've had moments like the Goats Head Soup reissue and Tattoo You reissue, where we've seen spikes and brought new audiences in. But if you take Blue & Lonesome out of the equation, this album is the first time in 18 years since they have put out a studio album. It’s the first time in the streaming era that they have put out a proper studio album. I genuinely think this album is going to be a rocket for the catalogue. This album will bring new fans in, but everything we’re doing is not just about this album. The Spotify-Barcelona partnership is about exposing the Stones and their iconic branding to a billion people. It’s not just going to be all focused on the new album, it’s going to be focused on everything.”


Where can the Stones go from here, can they reach new heights on this campaign?

“Yeah, but it’s the Stones! They’ve been at the top for six decades, both musically and culturally. They’re always pushing boundaries, be it in a live sense, musically or creatively. Who else has remained at the forefront of culture for over 60 years, constantly pushing to achieve more. Honestly the quality of this record just cements the Stones at the top of the list. It is incredible, and I think it will take a lot of people by surprise. The reviews are really strong, but I think the word of mouth is going to be even stronger. It’s an absolute honour to be involved with the Stones. I’ve got very high expectations for the record.”

I just got done listening to the album with RO legend Sir Stonesalot.

I'm so fucking happy we all lived to experience the Stones doing what we knew they could do.  Listening to it straight thru, climaxing with Sweet Sounds and then into Rolling Stone Blues -  It's impossible not to tear up.   I love this fucking band so much, and they love me back.

Let the old still believe that they're young. 

When I dedicated my life to Keith Richards in 7th grade, I figured it would lead to an early death. His AND mine.  Instead, the Stones completely changed what it means to be 80 - old by any yardstick.   You can rock the whole way home, man. Now we know.

The new album is better than Some Girls. Fight me.

Finally. I listened to it, streaming since my physical copy hasn't been delivered.

Wide range of emotions.

It sounds different, but familiar. Very familiar when Charlie is anchoring the band. Charlie Watts. I miss his sound.

The weaving is evident. I think they finally got it to be what they always wanted. I can't tell Ronnie from Keith on some tracks. More weaving, less riffs. I enjoy hearing Keef pepper some of the tracks with little blues motifs. There's some John Lee Hooker stuff here and there.

It's a loud record. Even Rolling Stone Blues is mixed hot.

The mix on Sweet Sounds of Heaven is beautiful. Stevie is a great addition.

The line forms behind me for The Hackney Diamonds World Tour. Bring it on!

Blown away. I was expecting a stronger than normal "late career" offering, but this record absolutely floored me upon first listen.

After 2016's Blue and Lonesome it was obvious that the chops were still very much there in the studio space. But cover tunes couldn't portend the sublime songs chosen for this short sharp shock of Hackney Diamonds.

The band has nothing to prove, but they proved it anyway. The snark is there. The sneering anger is there. The wistful regret is there. The nod to their early 1980's disco dabbling (which they did, and still do, do with a Stonsian panache) is there. Charlie is there! In fact he hangs all over this album even on the tunes that he had no part in. Bill is there! McCartney getting punk with a crunchy bass line is there! It's all there and it's bloody revelatory.

Most Stones' albums age well. In fact it's fair to say that most of them should be aged for a bit. Listen to Voodoo Lounge today and you realize how much better it was than upon your first listen. Maybe that will happen with Hackney Diamonds as well, but I'll be damned if I can see how it could get much better?

Bless Andrew Watt. A three week concentrated crunch fest in the studio has paid off in a big way. I can honestly say that this album captured me from the very first track and the last Stones' album that did that for me was Tattoo You. Given the fact that that 1981 offering was a mishmash of older tunes from the vault and a much longer recording process the comparison with Hackney and Tattoo is almost a moot point.

You have the earth, the sun, moon, and stars, and you still have The Rolling Stones! Who'd have thought we'd still be even discussing the band and the anticipation of yet another massive world tour 60 plus years later! Insane!

Not trying to fight you on this, I totally respect your opinion and actually wanna add up on this with my own metrics of measuring how much I'm enjoying a Stones record...

I was thinking about this last night because I STILL cannot name just a single favourite on HD since they all are very unique and all have something special and there are great parts on each of them, so it'a hard to pick faves

So I was thinking, let'a check how many songs on the other albums I usually genuinely love and actively enjoy listening to without skipping them (seeing that on HD  only Mess It Up gives me the urge to skip it)

Well...I love more songs on HD than on any album that came out after Some Girls...and even before some Girls, there even are only 3 albums (of course the great 3, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile) of which I love every single song so much that I'd never skip it because I'm annoyed by it for some reason...

I guess that says a lot about Hackney Diamonds, at least for my own personal metric of measuring how good a record is

Saves me time...I'm listening to this again in real time while I read his posts of each song...

Mess It Up...I actually really like this little pop ditty.
I said this to Gazza the other evening...I can totally see this song being remixed by Beck, Tame Impalas, or similar
and get its plays/downloads numbers UP UP UP UP UUUUHHHHPPPPPP

I love the fact that they included the longer version of SSOH on the album.
I regard this as CYHMK redux, in the similar vein that they kept the impromptu Santanaesque jam at the end and did so again here.

I am so enjoying this album...playing it non-stop...I even left for work early so I could cruise down the country roads,
avoiding the bi-ways and highways, on the way into the office as this provided the soundtrack to my commute.
Now, we wait for the 40th anniversary re-packaged release of UNDERCOVER....lol


Off topic...Speaking of numbers...I just noticed that Paint It Black has now tallied over 1 BILLION hits on Spotify

Got the lentricular cd/blu ray 12' size combo and it really is a thing of beauty

Love the 3-CD style artwork. And whats this, we actually have not only lyrics and credits, but sleevenotes on a Rolling Stones album.  Have they done that since Andrew Oldham's controversial 'Clockwork Orange' inspired rant on their debut LP?

I just read this article with someone from the Stones marketing team for HD and they said that there will be several activities to promote the new album between October and December this year, do y'all think there is a chance they might play some actual shows for fans (as opposed to just celebs and record label people) maybe 2 in London and 2 in NYC or LA in November/December?

I mean the guys seem excited and eager to bring these songs on stage, they all looked so happy playing them on Thursday and they seem to have rehearsed quite a bit during the past few weeks, first in London, then in NYC...

I think the 'activities' they speak of are something that the record label will be responsible for.

I wouldnt be overconfident about a series of shows. Lots of rehearsal time and work on production for that. Much more than what they did for a 7-song set last week.

It would certainly keep the interest going though if they announced 2024 tour dates in the next few weeks.  I wouldnt expect that tour to happen within the next 6 months, so without public appearances, that a long time to try and sustain the impetus.

A bit overproduced sometimes, but overall HD is a nice surprise. Now i understand Steve Jordan quotes about Watt's work . Many songs are really good. Lot of riffs and many trademark stones references. Love WWW and live by the sword ( sounds like an Undercover outtake  Grin ! )...all the songs in fact , only disapointment for me if the Keith one.
...even Mess it UP IS a nice dance song, Wonderful Charlie on this one!

It s Great to hear a New stones record in 2023.

I was just at the grocery store and WWW came on Spotify while I was standing in front of the aisle with the vegetarian stuff, trying to decide what to buy lol and I basically started to dance,just couldn't srop myself, and the guy next to me just gave me a really weird look  Grin Grin well it's not my fault that this song is fucking amazing lol...also on my way home it started raining really hard but I was listening to Live By The Sword and Driving Me Too Hard and just had the biggest smile on my face...god I fucking love this band <3

If '40 Licks' had sold something like 12 more copies in its first week, it would have been a chart topper and the Stones would be looking at no.1 UK album in seven decades. Unfortunately EMI, in their infinite wisdom, decided to release it at the same time as Elvis' TV advertised '30 #1 Hits' album.

If this one tops the charts, it'll take the Stones into joint second in the all time list

16 - The Beatles
14 - The Rolling Stones, Robbie Williams
13 - Elvis Presley
12 - Madonna, Bruce Springsteen
11 - David Bowie, U2
10 - Abba, Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, Eminem, Queen, Taylor Swift


However, when you only include number 1 studio albums, the Stones will go to 13. The next highest  is 11 (The Beatles, Springsteen, Robbie Williams).

The album will sell very well and it will stream adequately (<< it already is doing both). Sure .. it isn't going to do Taylor Swift or Drake numbers etc. .. BUT it will be a big hit and will be easily the biggest selling album world-wide this week .. >> and for a Rock and Roll band or a Rock oriented album in 2023 that is something ..  ESPECIALLY since it is coming from by far and away the oldest act going who started back in the early to middle of the 1960's - !

Who said The Stones could not produce a hit album in todays age (I think 'Blue & Lonesome' proved that theory incorrect) .. or that there were no hit albums anymore?

The Stones prove us (and the world) wrong again.

Chiming in for a quick sec...

I'll stand up and say that all this negativity about "Mess It Up" is
kinda funny. The comments about the cringey, teeth clenching "disco chorus"....is hilarious.
It's as if no one recalls Miss You...Emotional Rescue....Too Much Blood and a few others.
Sure it has the "four-on-the-floor" beat....but that just makes for a good radio single.

I got home yesterday to find my own Glimmer Twins and a few friends doing homework and whatever.
They had music playing in the background...One of my daughters must have heard me playing MIU and put it on her playlist.
Well...the girls kinda went wild...there was a loud "OMG" and the song started over and played LOUD...
they were all digging it and the non-daughters had never heard it before.

Something about the song seems to have hit them hard...I recall that happening when I was their age...even now, really.
It seems that whatever plan there was for this song...it seems to be working. It is a good single.

I look fwd to any remixes that may result (I love that sort of thing).

DO IT FOR THRE KIDS!

I well hope that Hackney is followed úp sooner. rather than later; certainly before BW puts the finishing crutches to 'Bigger Bill In The Clem (The Gem) Years' or whatever it's called.

There sure seem to be a lot of songs on this record about the singer getting away from a woman who's dragging him down.  I suppose that's better thematics than Morning Joe Cues, and thank God.  Maybe this is where all the love songs came to die.

I agree that Tell Me Straight should have been lengthened like Thru and Thru.  They could have added a closing instrumental jam just where this edit ends.  They've never had confidence in their instrumentals, though everybody who hears their studio outtakes falls in love with them.

This is one new record where if they played the whole thing on tour, sacrificing a few hits, no audience would feel cheated.*  For once, the record's too short.

So...last nite as I was walking back to my car from watching the Hurricanes beat the Kraken in OT...I was stopped by 2 real young kids...
like 18+ (they were in front of a local music venue)...they saw my  Tongue shirt I was wearing, circa 2006,  and flat out asked my what I thought about Hackney Diamonds...that is how they asked, not the "new Stones album" or "single", but the actual album...

We talked for about 5 minutes about all sorts of stuff regarding the album...

It was a genuinely refreshing moment for me and a perfect way to end off the evening...
Who stole this one? (Seriously)

With first week consumption of 72,204 units – the third highest of 2023, behind Lewis Capaldi’s Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent (95,882 sales) and Ed Sheeran’s Subtract (76,263), 22 and 24 weeks ago, respectively – Hackney Diamonds’ introductory tally included 36,179 CDs, 27,371 vinyl albums, 995 blu-ray, 61 cassettes, 4,373 digital downloads and 3,225 sales-equivalent streams. The Rolling Stones were last No.1 in September 2020, when the reissued and expanded 1973 album Goats Head Soup topped on sales of 13,107. Their last album of new recording, covers set Blue & Lonesome, sold 105,830 copies as it topped the chart in December 2016, and has to-date sales of 359,142 copies.

Their 12th No.1 album (14 if chart-topping reissues of Exile On Main Street and Goat’s Head Soup are included alongside their similarly high-achieving originals), Hackney Diamonds comprises 11 new songs penned by band members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (three with producer Andrew Watt) and a cover of 1950 Muddy Waters song, Rolling Stone Blues.

Amazingly for a band with 55 hit singles, none of The Rolling Stones’ No.1 albums is a compilation, their tally comprising 1970 live album Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! and 11 studio albums. However, their 2002 compilation Forty Licks – which rebounds 86-75 (2,000 sales) this week for the Stones to complete the rare feat of topping and tailing the Top 75 simultaneously – is their biggest-selling Kantar era album, with to-date consumption of 1,161,019 units.

With Hackney Diamonds’ coronation, the Rolling Stones move into a four-way tie for most No.1 studio albums by an act, alongside The Beatles, Robbie Williams and Bruce Springsteen. Expect that fact to change rather Swift-ly (sic).

The only group to have new No.1 albums in six different decades (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2010s, 2020s), the Rolling Stones currently comprise the aforementioned Jagger (80), Richards (79) and Ronnie Wood (76), although two tracks on the album feature drummer Charlie Watts, who died in 2021 aged 80, and one features the band’s original bass guitarist Bill Wyman (87), 34 years after his last contribution to the group’s oeuvre. Thus a trio with an average age of 78, they are the oldest group ever to top the chart, winning back a record they previously held from ABBA, who averaged 74 when they reached No.1 with Voyage in November 2021. The Stones already hold the record for the singles chart, established in September when Angry, the first single from Hackney Diamonds, reached No.34. It re-enters the chart this week at No.73 (5,377 sales).

Hackney Diamonds is also expected to be a big success overseas – it has already debuted at No.1 in Australia, Ireland and Germany, where it is their 11th No.1 and has higher (undisclosed) sales than any album in a week since local heroes Rammstein’s Time launched a year and a half ago."

Blink-182’s One More Time bows atop the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Nov. 4), securing the rock trio its third chart-topping set. The new full-length studio album begins with 125,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Oct. 26, according to Luminate, largely powered by traditional album sales.

One More Time is Blink-182’s first album with the group’s longtime lineup of drummer Travis Barker, vocalist/bassist Mark Hoppus and guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge since DeLonge departed the group in 2015 for seven years, and the first studio effort from that trio since 2012’s Dogs Eating Dogs EP. (Barker, Hoppus and DeLonge comprised Blink-182 during the band’s mainstream breakthrough in 1999 through 2014.)

Blink-182 previously hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 2016’s California (with the lineup of Barker, Hoppus and guitarist/vocalist Matt Skiba) and 2001’s Take Off Your Pants and Jacket.

One More Time was led by a pair of No. 1s on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart: “Edging” (No. 1 for 13 consecutive weeks in 2022-23, the band’s longest run at No. 1 with any of its five leaders) and the title track (No. 1 for two weeks, thus far, including on the most recently published chart, dated Oct. 28). “Edging” marked the first No. 1 for Blink-182 on the Alternative Airplay chart since 2016’s “Bored to Death,” and One More Time is the first Blink-182 album to generate at least two No. 1s on the survey. Both “Edging” and “One More Time” also reached the all-genre, multi-metric Billboard Hot 100, hitting Nos. 61 and 62, respectively – the band’s highest-charting Hot 100 entries since 2004’s “I Miss You” reached No. 42.

Of One More Time’s 125,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 26, album sales comprise 101,000 (making it the top-selling album of the week), SEA units comprise 23,000 (equaling 30.19 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise 1,000.

Sales of One More Time were bolstered by its availability across 11 vinyl variants (which combined to sell 49,000 copies — the largest sales week for a rock album on vinyl in 2023), a standard CD, a cassette, and a deluxe boxed set with a branded shirt and a CD contained inside. The trio also released a late-in-the-week deluxe digital edition of the album, exclusively sold on the band’s webstore beginning on Oct. 25, which boasts two new bonus songs.


Drake’s chart-topping For All the Dogs is a non-mover at No. 2 with 120,000 equivalent album units earned (down 27%). It also scores its first frame at No. 1 on the recently launched Top Streaming Albums chart.

The Rolling Stones’ new studio album Hackney Diamonds debuts at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 101,000 equivalent album units earned. It’s the band’s first effort of all-original material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang, which debuted and peaked at No. 3. Hackney Diamonds marks the Stones’ 38th top 10-charting album, extending the group’s record for the most top 10 albums on the chart (since the list began publishing on a regular, weekly basis in 1956). Hackney Diamonds boasts special guests Lady Gaga, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. The set was led by the singles “Angry” and “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” with Gaga. Both reached the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, while “Angry” has also reached the top 10 of the Adult Alternative Airplay tally.

Of Hackney Diamonds’ first-week units, album sales comprise 94,000, SEA units comprise 6,000 (equaling 8.41 million on-demand official streams of the album’s songs) and TEA units comprise 1,000. Bad Bunny’s Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana falls 1-4 in its second week on the Billboard 200 with 97,000 equivalent album units earned (down 47%).

The rest of the top 10 on the new Billboard 200 consists of former No. 1s, as Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time climbs 6-5 (69,000; up less than 1%); Taylor Swift’s Midnights rises 9-6 (52,000; up 3%); Swift’s Lover ascends 8-7 (52,000; down less than 1%); Zach Bryan’s self-titled album falls 4-8 (just over 51,000; down 29%); Rod Wave’s Nostalgia dips 7-9 (51,000; down 4%); and Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts is a non-mover at No. 10 (45,000; down 9%).

After listening to the album an endless number of times, I feel a little bit more sober in what it sounds like.

As everyone has said, it's a solid album with a lot of things they haven't done for a long time and some new things that add to the Stones lexicon. And as happy as I am with the result, I think Steve Jordan's comment in Mojo hits the nail on the head that some of it sounds too poppy. It's probably a combination of Mick's long time desire to largely stay away from the past and Andrew Watts' pop sensibilities. I would love the next album to be what Steve Jordan wanted, for the Glimmer Twins to produce and Steve Jordan to help out. Steve Jordan and Mick's relationship seems to have developed more closely over the course of this album, so I'd love to hear what the three of them come up with. I'm not one of those who is in the Keith or Mick camp, and Crosseyed Heart bore the crap out of me, but I'd love that trio to work on something together.

I don't want to take away from Andrew Watts though. The way he has brought out the lead guitar lines is truly impressive. The solos haven't sounded this good on any Stones record since Tattoo You. And some of them are even better. He's also brought all of them together in a seemingly perfect way, including people like Matt Clifford whose piano playing is the best he has ever done with the Stones.

Driving Me Too Hard is a modern day Stones classic, and I never tire of hearing it. It may be a Keith song, but Mick's phrasing and his ability to sing slightly off key in parts is just incredible. I wouldn't be surprised if this is more of a combination song. It's as good as anything they have done since Some Girls, and has the best elements of all of them - even that beautiful pedal steel sound right at the end. People may talk about this as classic Stones, but this sounds like what Mick talked about in the press conference that this album is the Stones today. This song really couldn't be on any of their 60s, 70s, or 80s albums. Maybe 90s or A Bigger Bang, but it still seems out of place for those albums. It's just wonderful in every way. The only small wish I have is that it would have been perfect with Charlie and Bill.

Living By the Sword just sounds like home. I wish Bill had been on more of the album. Elton John's piano playing seems to have gone under the radar here, but it's really good although it's a little too low in the mix.

Rollin Stone Blues is just a beautiful way to end the album, and Mick's harmonica playing is majestic. His best since Fancyman Blues.

Sweet Sounds of Heaven is one of the best things that Mick has ever written. Said before that Lady Gaga is not my cup of tea, and although she adds some quality to the song, I wish it was someone else and there was more Stevie Wonder on it.

Mess It Up could have been so much more. A funk version of it with a Bootsy Collins bass line seems perfect. I actually liked the Really Wanna Tell The Truth demo version more. The album version lost the beautiful melodic licks that Ronnie added and Bernard's backing vocals. The first half is a touch dodgy but it recovers and is catchy. I forgot that Charlie was on this and I thought Steve really nailed his Charlie tribute here before I remembered that it sounds like home again because it is Charlie.

Dreamy Skies is a Mick and Ronnie showcase. Ronnie's slide playing is up there with the best, I just wish it was a little richer in how it came out.

Angry is just solid and was the best choice for a single.

Get Close, Whole Wide World, and Depending on You are all really outstanding songs but are the three that I think are let down by the production. As great as they are, and as much as I don't get tired of listening to them, they seem too poppy and on the light side.

Bite My Head Off doesn't stand up to their best forways into  Chuck Berry style punk on Some Girls because Mick's vocals and lyrics sound a little forced, but it's still a solid song and as much as I can't stand McCartney, his bass line is my favorite part of the song.

Tell Me Straight is my least favorite. I initially thought it was great, but it's the only song that I'm beginning to skip.

Although incredible in parts (Morocco or a corner bar), the lyrics seem a little like they were written to meet the concentrated deadline.

It's just a solid album that was brought together beautifully by Andrew Watt. I hope they use this platform to make the next one even better.

Driving home on Friday, As I passed all the frat houses (it is part of my commute)...I was stopped at a light.
I heard MESS IT UP blaring at one of the lawn parties.
It was Homecoming weekend, I believe. There was more than the typical keggers with beer pong and such as I would usually see.
People were dressed up in the cocktail dresses and jackets/khakis and getting ready for some evening festivities.

The light had changed before the song was over.
I was hoping to tell if it was just the song or if the (slim) possibility that the album was being played.
These crazy college kids and their fads!!

I would have disappointed as well...it's the only one of the originals  songs I like at  the very least on that album

I can't believe I am STILL loving this album.
The BEST thing about it is the length. 48 minutes of pure RnR bliss!
No worthless fillers, no obligation to fill 79 minutes of the CD format, etc
A problem that, IMO, plagued all releases from VL onward.

I have been riding in my jeep with the top off for a week now
(The Carolinas are experiencing the best autumn in years!!)
with HD blaring...I take the long way home sometimes or even pass my house
and continue for 15 minutes mode just to get to the end while cruising.
I know it has enhanced my mood these last few weeks, for sure!

Totally second that! My job has been rather annoying lately, I gotta do very boring, repetitive tasks that still are incredibly important for the project at the moment, so in order to not die of boredom when not distracted by meetings and other calls, I keep listening to the new album on Spotify when I can and it's sure an incredible mood-booster!

Also I'm seeing a Stones cover band this WE and I wonder whether they might play some of the new songs, it would be kinda funny to hear them live in person first by a cover band and not by the Stones themselves xD

Hahah thanks, I didn't even really do that much except for wasting time googling stuff and uploading files here and there to try out what works best Cheesy I also got Tell Me Straight but it didn't let me upload it on Youtube yet for some reason...I'll try again, all those different file formats are a struggle :/

Ronnie mentioned him, he said he was zooming with him and Elton asked if he could play with them, then Ronnie joked to him that he'd have to join the queue of others who also want to be on the album with them xD even Keith said something about him in an interview as far as I remember, apparently they're getting along nowadays, I haven't read anything by Mick about Elton, but let's face it, the interviewers all just keep asking them about Gaga and Macca and Charlie all the time, so they'll keep repeating the same answers over and over again, it's getting a bit old...wish there were interviewers who dared to ask a bit out of the box stuff

Interesting that Keith says Elton's part was recorded - without him - in London - and he overdubbed his guitar parts later. It seems from these quotes that they all overdubbed over Charlie's drum track.

Wow I just saw a Stones cover band in my home town and they played Angry and SSOH!! The female singer was so freaking good, imo the actual Stones should hire her to sing that song, since I cannot really see Sasha Allen managing it that amazingly xD sadly cannot share a vid yet since the internet here is slow af, but hopefully tomorrow then once it has uploaded...

They also played Brown Sugar and I recorded it as well, probably was the last time I'm gonna hear it live lol since the actual Stones decided to let themselves get cancelled by the woke wave...

They're called Street Fighting Men (The Rolling Stones Tribute Project) and are from Bavaria, Germany. They said they're gonna tour in southern Bavaria, near Munich for the next few weeks, then come back to northern Bavaria early next year

Cause someone over on Shidoobee found my vid and they all are very surprised to be able to hear Keith singing background...my main motivation to extract the vocals of this song was because Mick and Keith are singing nice harmony tbh  Grin I don't understand how they didn't hear Keith before??  Huh

This one's very interesting...in the beginning Mick apparently is singing too quiet for the AI to catch it properly, it swallows him up a little bit...but then somewhen in the middle during one of the instrumental parts, when stripped of the instruments, you can actually hear people talking and someone laughing

This is really great. Of all the songs they do live, the one where Bernard really shines is Ruby Tuesday, and he has sung this so beautifully since 1989. This vocal only extraction really shows how much texture he adds to their music.

Yesterday evening my brother and I were watching the telly, a documentary series on German TV about the airport in Frankfurf which is airing a few episodes every week or so, about the jobs people do at the airport. I hadn't watched it in a while but of courde watching it soothed me since I haven't been on a plane in 12 years (and am mildly scared of flying) but fully intend to fly to the US next year from Frankfurt to catch some show...

long story short, at the end of the episode, they played Angry as background music!! That gotta be a sign!! I was so excited and happy that even a random German TV channel would use Angry for one of their shows Cheesy

This will be unique, specially if we see it this way:
  • Four live debuts
  • Full show, in the same order it was played
  • More than half of the songs played that day are debuts
  • The same four were played live before "the new album" goes on sale to the public (two of them had already been released as singles)
  • It is the raw sound of the original stones (two guitars, a bass, a drummer, keyboards and a singer, the only thing that is added to this original sound is a backup singer)
  • First official live album without Charlie

I'd imagine there would be. Whilst it was great to see and hear them on a stage again, they were (understandably) a bit rough.

To the best of my knowledge, theres no circulating audience audio of the full show yet, so this is welcome

Hackney Diamonds II to be released in time for Xmas?

Unlikely especially with the timeframe but hoping that they may finish the next album before the tour kicks off. It would make sense to do this to play new songs from two albums live.

Christmas? Its 23 days away and theyve already announced another impending release!

Think its more likely they're working on songs that they can finish up after the US Tour next summer and release in time for wherever they're planning to tour in 2025.

No way will they tour the US next year behind TWO albums released six months apart. Makes absolutely no sense. Its hard to get audiences interested in songs off one new record as it is

Indeed. Unless you've never played an instrument before, theres no need to rehearse for a tour four months in advance

The Racket cd is out in 13 days. I'd imagine if theyve overdubbed anything it would have been done before now  (maybe that London visit)

The McCartney story is just a rumour. Nothing confirmed.

reading now that the rumoured 'Macca in Florence' story was bogus (made no sense as he's already contributed to another song that'll be on the next album)

Sky Sports just showed an ad for the new album prior to this afternoon's big Man City / Tottenham game, promoting it as the 'ideal Christmas gift'. Obviously another big push from UMG.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but this youtube channel has uploaded all 12 HD songs from the Dolby Atmos source

I havent listened to it that way yet as I need new speakers.

However, if you dont have surround sound and are just listening to the album on ordinary speakers, its an interesting perspective with Mick's lead vocal much higher in the mix and the back up vocals and some other instrumentation barely audible. Macca's bass on 'Bite My Head Off' is mixed way up from the start! The lead vocal on 'Live by the sword' seems to feature punched-in vocals from different sessions to me.

My only slight gripe. The album cover is a little creepy. I would have chosen a cover more along the lines of that original Hackney ad, that was a cool concept. Could have been witty as fuck.

Not getting tired of this album at all...its been 2 months and still the only CD I play these days...of course it the only CD I own, but that's beside the point.
It's in the Jeeps player and has remained on constant play since.
I recall not even caring about ABB by this point...I listened to it a few times before the tour/shows I attended,
and Im not sure Ive ever listened to is since.

Eight weeks after debuting at No.1, Hackney Diamonds returns to the summit for The Rolling Stones following the release on CD and digitally of a new ‘live’ edition featuring an additional seven tracks recorded at an October gig at New York’s Racket club. Overall consumption of the album of 16,460 units is the lowest on record for a Christmas No.1 album, and comprises 13,204 CDs, 2,536 vinyl albums, 43 blu-ray discs, 252 digital downloads and 425 sales-equivalent streams.

Hackney Diamonds is the first Rolling Stones album to be No.1 at Christmas, and their first album to return to No.1 since 2020 when an expanded version of 1973 chart-topper Goats Head Soup did so. It is also No.1 for Christmas in Germany.

The only seasonally-themed artist album ever to top the chart at Christmas is Michael Bublé’s Christmas, which did so in 2011. It came close to doing so again this week, but ultimately remains at No.2 on consumption of 15,307 units.

Number one for sales, but how do these numbers figure in with people who pay for a streaming service and listen to it for free (without buying it) when it's included in a subscription? Those numbers are not included in the chart analysis. I've listened to it dozens of times without ever paying for it (but I did buy the vinyl red edition at the pop-up store.) I'm just wondering how or if they count those streaming for free. Only 425 has got to be wrong. I've got at least 25 myself!

The Official Charts Company takes the 12 most streamed tracks from one album, with the top-two songs being down-weighted in line with the average of the rest. The total of these streams is divided by 1000 and added to the pure sales of the album.

So, 425 "sales" from streams for HD in UK equal to 425,000/500,000 streams in a week for the 12 songs.

I slowly managed to actually like four of the tracks, but that's all faded
away now. So much so that I've actually stored away whatever Stones
memorabilia I had on display...

I'm suddenly not a big fan. Very strange.

On the bright side, I'm catching up on some movies. I've recently
quite enjoyed Denzel in Equalizer 3 and Rita Hayworth in Gilda.  
What a babe!

Not only have I missed the train, but I seem to have drifted off into
an alternative reality where...

1) This thing is not even regarded as a real Rolling Stones album, but rather
as some sort of AI-replica of the Stones masterminded by Andrew Watt.
The Hackneyed Demons. Featuring lousy AI cover art.

2) Andrew Watt – bass guitar, guitar, percussion, keyboards, backing
vocals, string arrangements, studio wizardry

3) I've read a few positive reviews of various of the tracks where the
reviewers commented on the unusual chords layered here and there.
I bet those chords are AI-Stones guitarist Andrew Watt in post-production,
polishing the turd.

4) Just as AI occasionally produces an aesthetically sophisticated image,
I still regard "Angry" as a worthy addition to the Stones catalogue, both
musically and lyrically. And, okay, I'll grudgingly include "whole wide
world". But otherwise these Jagger songs seem to me embarrassingly generic.

5) Can you imagine how boring "sweet sounds" would be without
Gaga's transcendent participation?  It would have been a snoozer,
since nobody, not even Stevie Wonder, had anything interesting to
say instrumentally

6) I've acknowledged its still possible I'll get the shit out of my ears
and catch this train further on down the line. But I doubt it. Especially
since at this point I find it absolutely disgusting, on so many levels,
that Steve Jordan is not officially a full member of the Rolling Stones.

There's no such thing as a rock n roll band without a drummer

They should be doing more to keep the album current before the tour, since this album, however good, is the first without a "radio song" or two.  Closes with a big production number that racks up downloads, but no hit singles.

The other evening, I was at my local watering hole...which is next to this awesome small punk bar...
and the first band was great to listen to from the sidewalk table I was sitting at.
I spoke with these "kids" in the band afterwards...The Stones and HD came up...the guitar player was a huge fan of the album...
not so much the Stones per say...but was able to hold his own when talking about HD...
I was VERY VERY VERY VERY impressed. You rock!
It was a great nite...I felt validated to a point!!

my guess it's on the east coast cause when I first saw the vid it was 3h after it was posted last evening and according to time zones it was 6pm west coast then but in the video it was dark outside, so east coast is the logical conclusion...

This is an instant classic.  Exchange this record for Emotional Rescue as far when it was released, and you would have people like Martin Popoff saying how miraculous it was that they had this three album run from Some Girls to Tattoo You so late in the game.  The only mistake with this one was not releasing "Mess It Up" as the lead single. 

The songs and the performances are there with this one.  It's a mistake to look back to older classics recorded when Ronnie wasn't in the band.  You have to judge and compare it to what they have done ever since he joined, and this is easily the third best record with Ronnie.

This narrative that it doesn't sound like a Stones record seems pretty unsubstantiated to me.  Take "Get Close," for example.  That song was initially worked on by Keith and Andrew Watt.  They sent a demo of the groove to Jagger so that he could write a melody to it, which he eventually did.  Are Jagger's vocals too upfront?  Perhaps, but listen to the riff played by Keith on the left channel and how Ronnie weaves with it on the right.  That's the Stones, baby.

"Depending On You" started as Keith and Steve were warming up and Keith played a chord progression that caught Mick's ear, so he went up to him and asked him to play it again.  Another is "Whole Wide World," which Jagger had envisioned as a punk song.  However, once Keith started messing with the riff he slowed it down and reworked it.  "Driving Me Too Hard" is totally a Keith song that they had been kicking around since 2015 or 2016.  Even the riff of "Angry" is reminiscent of "Soul Survivor" from Exile (a Keith song), despite being mostly written by Jagger.

By the way, all this info is in the book that comes with the blu ray box set, so I get that it may not be that easily available.  Although Andrew Watt has talked about it in some interviews.

I think Watt did a great job cracking the whip and getting this out of them.  The most 2023 thing about the record are the melodies that Jagger wrote.  Some will decry that they are too poppy for them, but Between the Buttons is one of their best records in my estimation.  Anyone paying attention knows that they have one of the most eclectic discographies, and this is a fine addition, in my opinion.

This are just my two cents, though, and I appreciate you guys sharing your thoughts!

What do y'all think are the chances they're gonna play that one live? Or Depending on You? Tbh I think maybe they'd only try 1-2 times, maybe in one of those cities where they play 2 shows each, in order to change things up a bit...I mean also in 2022 in London we got a few songs they didn't really play elsewhere or at least only once or twice during the tour...

The songs on this album are not so complex or overly produced that they can't be played live.
If they wanted to, they could play every song throughout the tour.
I would love 3 per show, but that wont happen, or if it does, it will last about 3 shows...
reduce to two, then Angry will be the only one by the last third of the tour.
It's a shame, really. I hope I am proven wrong!

The only war horse I'd be really sad to see scratched in favour of a new song is Midnight Rambler, it's my favourite song live, all the rest of the war horses I don't 100% need xD (oh and also JJF I LOVE this live but so does Keith and that's why I guess they absolutely won't drop that, luckily xD)

Imo they should just drop Miss You, I never really liked the live version, the recors version is so much better, amd for some odd reason Mick also never really seems to properly know the lyrics and always messes up in some part  Grin and Miss You is dragging on for at least 10 minutes which is a waste of time, instead of that they could literally play at least 2 new songs... Roll Eyes

I also wouldn't mind at all if they switched Gimme Shelter with SSOH every 2nd show or so, it gets a bit boring hearing it a lot when you go to multiple shows on the tour, but of course I understand that the majority of people there isn't as crazy as us and only goes to one show (probably in their entire lives) which is the main problem about the war horses vs other songs ratio...

Another thought that just occured to me, I loved when in 2019 Mick and Keith were doing this little acoutic set of Dead Flowers and Sweet Virginia (mostly those 2 I think, maybe some nights switched up with LIB or so) and it would be SO beautiful to have them do that for Dreamy Skies <3
