Charts analysis: Rolling Stones score first Christmas No.1 with a resurgent Hackney Diamonds

Eight weeks after debuting at No.1, Hackney Diamonds returns to the summit for The Rolling Stones following the release on CD and digitally of a new ‘live’ edition featuring an additional seven tracks recorded at an October gig at New York’s Racket club. Overall consumption of the album of 16,460 units is the lowest on record for a Christmas No.1 album, and comprises 13,204 CDs, 2,536 vinyl albums, 43 blu-ray discs, 252 digital downloads and 425 sales-equivalent streams.

Hackney Diamonds is the first Rolling Stones album to be No.1 at Christmas, and their first album to return to No.1 since 2020 when an expanded version of 1973 chart-topper Goats Head Soup did so. It is also No.1 for Christmas in Germany.

The only seasonally-themed artist album ever to top the chart at Christmas is Michael Bublé’s Christmas, which did so in 2011. It came close to doing so again this week, but ultimately remains at No.2 on consumption of 15,307 units.

Number one for sales, but how do these numbers figure in with people who pay for a streaming service and listen to it for free (without buying it) when it's included in a subscription? Those numbers are not included in the chart analysis. I've listened to it dozens of times without ever paying for it (but I did buy the vinyl red edition at the pop-up store.) I'm just wondering how or if they count those streaming for free. Only 425 has got to be wrong. I've got at least 25 myself!

The Official Charts Company takes the 12 most streamed tracks from one album, with the top-two songs being down-weighted in line with the average of the rest. The total of these streams is divided by 1000 and added to the pure sales of the album.

So, 425 "sales" from streams for HD in UK equal to 425,000/500,000 streams in a week for the 12 songs.

More vinyl LPs were bought this year than at any time since 1990 and are growing at their fastest rate this decade.

With just a few more days to go to year-end, the vinyl market has increased by nearly 12%, rising for the 16th year in a row, according to analysis of Official Charts data by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

Over a quarter of a million vinyl albums were sold in the week before Christmas, the highest sales for the format this century.

Continuing her domination of the music industry and pop culture as a whole, Taylor Swift's 1989 (Taylor's Version) was the best-selling vinyl album, and the 33-year-old star took two more slots in the top ten with Speak Now (Taylor's Version) and Midnights.

The Rolling Stones took second place with Hackney Diamonds, their first album of original songs in 18 years.

I slowly managed to actually like four of the tracks, but that's all faded
away now. So much so that I've actually stored away whatever Stones
memorabilia I had on display...

I'm suddenly not a big fan. Very strange.

On the bright side, I'm catching up on some movies. I've recently
quite enjoyed Denzel in Equalizer 3 and Rita Hayworth in Gilda.
