This is an instant classic.  Exchange this record for Emotional Rescue as far when it was released, and you would have people like Martin Popoff saying how miraculous it was that they had this three album run from Some Girls to Tattoo You so late in the game.  The only mistake with this one was not releasing "Mess It Up" as the lead single. 

The songs and the performances are there with this one.  It's a mistake to look back to older classics recorded when Ronnie wasn't in the band.  You have to judge and compare it to what they have done ever since he joined, and this is easily the third best record with Ronnie.

This narrative that it doesn't sound like a Stones record seems pretty unsubstantiated to me.  Take "Get Close," for example.  That song was initially worked on by Keith and Andrew Watt.  They sent a demo of the groove to Jagger so that he could write a melody to it, which he eventually did.  Are Jagger's vocals too upfront?  Perhaps, but listen to the riff played by Keith on the left channel and how Ronnie weaves with it on the right.  That's the Stones, baby.

"Depending On You" started as Keith and Steve were warming up and Keith played a chord progression that caught Mick's ear, so he went up to him and asked him to play it again.  Another is "Whole Wide World," which Jagger had envisioned as a punk song.  However, once Keith started messing with the riff he slowed it down and reworked it.  "Driving Me Too Hard" is totally a Keith song that they had been kicking around since 2015 or 2016.  Even the riff of "Angry" is reminiscent of "Soul Survivor" from Exile (a Keith song), despite being mostly written by Jagger.

By the way, all this info is in the book that comes with the blu ray box set, so I get that it may not be that easily available.  Although Andrew Watt has talked about it in some interviews.

I think Watt did a great job cracking the whip and getting this out of them.  The most 2023 thing about the record are the melodies that Jagger wrote.  Some will decry that they are too poppy for them, but Between the Buttons is one of their best records in my estimation.  Anyone paying attention knows that they have one of the most eclectic discographies, and this is a fine addition, in my opinion.

What do y'all think are the chances they're gonna play that one live? Or Depending on You? Tbh I think maybe they'd only try 1-2 times, maybe in one of those cities where they play 2 shows each, in order to change things up a bit...I mean also in 2022 in London we got a few songs they didn't really play elsewhere or at least only once or twice during the tour...

The only war horse I'd be really sad to see scratched in favour of a new song is Midnight Rambler, it's my favourite song live, all the rest of the war horses I don't 100% need xD (oh and also JJF I LOVE this live but so does Keith and that's why I guess they absolutely won't drop that, luckily xD)

Imo they should just drop Miss You, I never really liked the live version, the recors version is so much better, amd for some odd reason Mick also never really seems to properly know the lyrics and always messes up in some part  and Miss You is dragging on for at least 10 minutes which is a waste of time, instead of that they could literally play at least 2 new songs...

I also wouldn't mind at all if they switched Gimme Shelter with SSOH every 2nd show or so, it gets a bit boring hearing it a lot when you go to multiple shows on the tour, but of course I understand that the majority of people there isn't as crazy as us and only goes to one show (probably in their entire lives) which is the main problem about the war horses vs other songs ratio...
