Sorry,  here comes the drama queen again...

I've been experiencing the vid off and on for over 12 hours now...

So maybe its because I'm sleep-deprived...

I've got many thoughts, but I want to make this quick...

For me, this video has been like listening to a song of
Oppenheimer-level gravity while watching Barbie-type visuals.

Both great, but I can't take the dissonance...

In the song, Mick seems to be saying something similar,
so I'm taking Mick's advice...

(and i'm definitely not mad at nobody in the Stones, and nobody
at RocksOff. This is just what i need to do to balance myself out,
considering our current difficult circumstances, which are nobody's
fault, at least not nobody I know)

Hmm? I get it, I guess. I love the riff. Jagger's lyrics seem a tad pedestrian for the lead single. That's just my opinion, and it may change. With all Stones' material that is subject to change over time. Lyrical vapidness notwithstanding they are certainly delivered with conviction and the band sounds tighter than a tick's ass. So that's very promising.

Sounds like we have a great album to look forward to, and the wonderful Stonsian hype machine that will be dropping morsels of the various tunes in the coming days and weeks till Oct 20th.

Six decades. Holy shit that is insane!

FINALLY......Don Was just didn't kick their ass....apparently this Watt kid did....and the results are there in the single even....all hail the Rolling Stones.

Call me new era old fashioned but I'm sort of with Rev on the  above
The video of 'Don, Go Angling With Me', or whaetever it's currently known as iin this manor, squire, doiesn't fit the video at all, it can be argued. One can see that it is appealing to men, especuially, when you see her wobbling conkers, especially, and prresumably the aim is to appeal to females by showing them free and frolicsome without sight of the guy or gal driving her, but it goes on a bit too.
I like when the Stains are open to multiple interpretations, very much, but there's something a tidsy-widsy too askew here, maybe. Sort of like Marty Feldman's 'Theory Of Internal Logic in comedy., of something.
Sozzy
But anyway...

The first half could be  a Mick solo...the back with Keefs bass and guitar links high in mix it gets Stonesy.  Seems to be growing on me the more I listen. Was Ronnie even on this song?

No. It was the pre 2022 stuff he wasnt enamoured with.

Going by what he said yesterday, all but two songs on the new record come from the sessions they did in LA from mid-October to early December 2022 and the additional session in the Bahamas and LA in Jan-Feb 2023. They also worked for two weeks at Electric Lady in New York in Sep/Oct and there was some studio time in Jamaica early last year but they didnt mention that.

He said that they cut 23 songs. I assumed he meant at THOSE sessions alone, in which case they did other stuff between late 2015 and early 2019. The only songs released from that era are 'Live by the Sword' and 'Mess it Up' plus 'Living In A Ghost Town'.  Bill's contribution to 'Live by the sword' was overdubbed in London in spring of this year. 'Ghost Town' was finished at Mick's home studio in spring 2020 just before it was released.

Recommend Martin Elliott's sessions page. He has good info there

discuss.

Easily,

The only iconic Stones video since 'Love is strong' was 'Anybody seen my baby'

Worth the price of admission alone for those shots of Keith apparently playing on top of the gargoyles on the Chrysler Building (even though he wasnt actually there and that wonderful solo on the outro is played by Waddy Wachtel)

I know I’m probably imagining this, but I swear the moment when the Love Is Strong video pops up in the Angry video, the sound is kind of evocative of one of those Voodoo tracks.

Is Don Was really off it? My guess is that the 2019 tracks will have had his production. Do we know if he's completely not there for the other ones? I'd be surprised if he didn't get listed as a producer for the whole thing in addition to Watt. I've wanted them to move on from him forever, not because I don't like his production, but because they needed a new perspective.

Well, Don was still their most recent producer when Charlie died (he's credited as producer on 'Ghost Town') so its probable he'll be listed as such on the two older songs

Not the first time more than one producer has been credited. 'Babylon' had loads of them

The Rolling Stones
Review
The Rolling Stones: Angry review – Jagger’s a hoot in strutting, barnstorming return
****
(Polydor)
The first single from new album Hackney Diamonds is a hilarious tale of arguing lovers, animated by bold soloing and evident creative hunger

Songs are rarely as “side one, track one” as the Rolling Stones’s new single Angry, which kicks off Hackney Diamonds, the band’s long-awaited full-album return to the Jagger-Richards songwriting partnership after 18 years.

The Stones were hardly ones for creeping quietly around the door – Sympathy for the Devil, Paint It Black, Gimme Shelter and Brown Sugar have all teed albums off in the past – but Angry kicks it off the hinges with an opening riff that is instantly, inimitably theirs. In key and mood, it somewhat recalls another album opener: Start Me Up, which opened Tattoo You. But despite the band’s advanced age today, that 1981 song now sounds rather leisurely in comparison with Angry’s tight, energised strut.

Jagger is massively entertaining throughout, dramatising a lover’s squabble with exasperation and bafflement: a really humanising performance that reminds us that for all their millions, rock stars can never be insulated from the ire of a pissed-off partner. “Don’t get angry with me / I never caused you no pain,” he begins, audibly on the back foot already – and then quickly complains that he, at 80, hasn’t had sex in a month.

Perhaps not so relatable after all. Anyway, that doesn’t go down well, and relations deteriorate at pace. By the bridge he’s pleading “please just forget about me,” and he’s now trying to do something we’ve all done: end a relationship well, with dignity and harmony, but ending up mired in petty recrimination. He even attempts the classic gambit of suggesting one last shag for old time’s sake: “If we go separate ways … let’s go out in a blaze.”

That doesn’t work either. “I’m still taking the pills / and I’m off to Brazil” he flounces, as the song plays out in a long, anthemic gospel coda. In time honoured fashion, Jagger goes spelunking for extra vowels so that “Brazil” ends up pronounced “Bra-zee-ow”. The whole thing is a complete hoot.

The Stones’s genius has always been take the haunted, spectral melodies of American blues and flick the casino lights on to them, and so it is here. Done a cappella by a different singer, Jagger lines here like “I never caused you no pain” could have a purely harrowed quality – but he and the band cleverly wax and wane from minor to major chords, carrying this tale of alternating desperation and resignation.

Producer Andrew Watt rightly allows for all manner of murk lower down the mix: growling, distorted bass from Richards and doom-portending piano by sessioner Matt Clifford. Between verses Richards and Wood double up on the riff, then swap back and forth some brilliantly groaning, lurching extemporised mini-solos: playing that suggests fun, freedom and creative hunger.

This is also the first recorded performance of new drummer Steve Jordan, and some Stones aficionados might find his martial exactitude lacking compared with the almost invisible, mystical swing of the late Charlie Watts’s performances. But it’s sympathetic and impactful timekeeping from Jordan (given a nice touch of echo by Watt), that keeps the song marching along like a someone having a head-clearing mid-argument stomp round the block.

Watts’s death reminded us of the mortality of the Stones, once so impossible-seeming, and it has surely preyed on their minds that they won’t have that many chances to write new albums. The quality here suggests they’re really seizing the opportunity – but on Angry, and at their boyishly buoyant accompanying press conference, they don’t sound at all freighted with nerves or fear. Instead, it situates them in a class of their own: rock-togenarians strutting back out to the world’s stadiums.

Hackney Diamonds is released by Polydor on 20 October

The Keith Richards riff machine is still in fine working order as the Rolling Stones return with new single Angry

By Jonathan Horsley published 1 day ago

The first single from long-awaited new studio album Hackney Diamonds proves that after all these years no-one does rock 'n' roll guitar quite like the Stones

The Rolling Stones are officially back, sharing the first single from their forthcoming new album, Hackney Diamonds, which hits record stores (and streaming services) worldwide on October 20.

The track is titled Angry, and it is everything you could want from the Stones in the 21st century, with an insistent riff, a big vocal hook, and a couple of solos that sound as though they’ve tumbled head first out of the electric guitar.

The video follows Sydney Sweeney (The White Lotus) in a convertible that’s working its way through a West Coast city’s streets – it has to be L.A. – as billboards along the side of the road come alive with animated renderings of the Stones – and their guitars – through the years.

There’s what looks like the 1969 Madison Square Garden performance that was captured for posterity on Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!

There’s Ronnie Wood with his 1978 Zemaitis single-cut – playing a lead that doesn’t quite match what’s laid out on the track here but that’s not what matters; we’re taking a trip through Stones history here.

There is Jagger in a blue jump suit. Keith Richards and his number one Telecaster, the heavily modded Micawber. Director Francois Rousselet does a neat job in threading the line from past to present.

As for the present, Hackney Diamonds will be the English rock ’n’ roll institution’s first album of original material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang. The Stones decamped to various studios across the world in the company of über-producer Andrew Watt – most notable in these parts for his work with Ozzy Osborne and Pearl Jam, but a who also counts blue-chip stars such as Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber among his clients.

Watt reportedly shares a writing credit on Angry, and his itinerary with the band took him on a whistle-stop tour around some of the most legendary recording facilities in the world. There was Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, Metropolis in London, Sanctuary Studios under the hot sun in Nassau, Bahamas, Electric Lady Studios and The Hit Factory/Germano Studios in New York.

The album will be their first with new drummer Steve Jordan, but is also reported to have some of the final recordings laid down by the late Charlie Watts. It is not as though the Stones have been in retirement these past few years.

Their Sixty Tour celebrated the band’s anniversary in stadiums across the world. Keith Richards had made it known on his Instagram page that new music was coming. The question was when.

Today, 6 September, 18 years to the day since A Bigger Bang’s release, we have the answer, with the band in at the Hackney Empire in east London right this minute announcing the album in the company of Jimmy Fallon.

Hackney Diamonds is out October 20 through Universal.

Lady Gaga and The Rolling Stones have made a gospel song together

Gaga? Ooh la la.

...

By George Griffiths | 07 September 2023

Yesterday, the Rolling Stones announced the release of Hackney Diamonds, their 24th studio album and their first containing fully original material since 2005.

Announced yesterday in a very snazzy livestream event which was hosted by Jimmy Fallon, where the band also unveiled the album's lead track Angry, accompanied by an equally snazzy music video featuring Euphoria starlet Sydney Sweeney.

And while Hackney Diamonds isn't even dropping for another month (arriving October 20 via Polydor), the Stones themselves announced that one of the tracks on the record would have a very special vocal guest in the guise of Lady Gaga.

Mother Monster will be one of the featured guests on Hackney Diamonds, trading bars with the Stones on a new song called Sweet Sound of Heaven, which has been likened to a gospel track.

"Lady Gaga sings really sweet on Sweet Sounds of Heaven," Ronnie Wood told Fallon yesterday. while Mick Jagger confirmed that, unlike the other songs on Hackney Diamonds, Sweet Sound of Heaven has more in common with the gospel genre than rock.

According to further reports from the event, Sweet Sound of Heaven will run for 7 minutes and 22 seconds (nice) and also feature Stevie Wonder (!) on piano.

Gaga herself hasn't released a solo album since 2020's lockdown pop opus Chromatica, which debuted at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart. Featuring the likes of Elton John and BLACKPINK, Chromatica's big second single Rain On With Me with Ariana Grande also debuted at Number 1, this time on the Official Singles Chart. It was the sixth Number 1 for both Gaga and Ariana.

And while we do still visit Chromatica regularly, Gaga is keeping us waiting for a seventh studio album, which is understandable given her very busy schedule filming the Joker sequel Foile a Deux, where she'll be taking on the mantle of Harley Quinn.

As for the Stones, the iconic group has claimed 13 UK Number 1 albums overall, their most recent being 2016's blues cover album Blue & Lonesome (their re-release of Goats Head Soup did re-enter the chart at Number 1 in 2020, but since the LP had already peaked at Number 1 in 1973, this doesn't count towards extending the tally).

Hackney Diamonds drops October 20 via Polydor.

Partially different interviews from yesterday. Dodgy research and some wanky questions from the interviewer, but he seems to appreciate the Stones.
