The setting is taking place in the MaxLugar's den at his sprawling Long Island Estate . In it we see a disillusioned and defeated MaxLugar sitting in front of the television set with all of the lights off - blinds closed - slurping drink after drink of ' Dewers & Water ' whilst watching the movie ' Patton ' over and over again . Even though the temperature outside is in the Mid - Nineties and the AC is cranked , the Lugar has a roaring fire going in the Fireplace - sweat pouring off his forehead - whilst a fan is circulating the air above him . The Lugar has let his white hair grow very long ( like a hippy )[ see : LBJ , 1970 - 1973 ] , has stopped bathing & grooming himself ( ** Phew ** !!! ) and stares blankly and uncomprehendingly at the television screen -- like cows in a passing train . Meanwhile - located directly behind the sofa - lies our brave hero , Sparky , desperately knawing at the rope being used to chain him to this squalid nightmare ; deriving strength from his knowledge that once he breaks free he can escape to the land of Democratic Party hope , peace , blissful merriment and exalting happiness ...free to live a life of religious fulfillment .
