let it be stated that i am generaly not a fan of live music. let it also be stated that, sadly, i am not familiar with the works of little feat. however, i recently dug out my copy of "waiting for columbus" that a friend gave me years ago...with that and my faithful, trusty friend Youtube, I have come to an important conclusion: little feat in its prime must have been one of the best live bands in the history of history.

was this band's following akin to that of the dead? to me, they seem like the dead, only with talent. vox are incredible....musicianship top notch....does the studio stuff approach this level of incredibility? "waiting for columbus" is easily one of the best live albums ever. i find it more stimulating than ya yas!

IMO 'Waiting For Columbus' is one of the best live albums ever made.
And the Deluxe Edition released in 02 is more better.

Ignoring the "talent" snark, The Dead comparison is a fair one.
Feat, like the Dead, were totally in their element on stage.

Lowell George produced 'Shakedown Street'.
Jerry's comment at the time was "We chose Lowell George because we wanted someone who understood band mechanics."

FYI, there is some Stones content in this thread - Mick Taylor plays slide on 'A Apolitical Blues'...

i don't know what it is about the dead...the live stuff does nothing for me. feat, on the other hand, sets my foot a-tappin'.

that being said, i love "workingman's dead" and "american beauty". suppose that makes me a poseur....

I believe Lowell George originally played with Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention...Mick Taylor plays on one song(Apolitical Blues) on Waiting For Columbus...I have a KILLER Little Feat DVD from their appearance on the German music show, Rockpalast, in 1976...I think Lowell died of a heroin overdose in 1978...the band still has most of its original members...Shaun Murphy, a backup singer for many years in Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band has been Little Feat's lead singer for several years but has recently left the band.

Lowell George was in the Mothers.
He often prefaced live versions of 'Willin' by saying that song got him kicked out of the band.

Died of a heart attack in 1979 while on tour in support of his solo album, 'Thanks I'll Eat It Here'.

Years of bad living likely contributed to that.

I'm glad for your ears you've seen the light. Sailin Shoes and WfC are on regular drunken rotation round these parts.

"Thanks I'll Eat It Here" contains a really good example of how a singer/performer can take a good song and make it great--just listen to his version of "Easy Money" back to back with Rickee Lee Jones'.

I used to have Apolitical Blues as my outgoing message. Anyone have the radio show (some east coast station I think) Lowell was on with Bonnie Raitt from the early 70's?

There used to be video footage of Mick Taylor jamming with the Feat from '77, doing Apolitical Blues - like on that live @ Columbus album, but the FULL version, not the shortened, edited version. So his solos are longer, sweeter, and sexier. But the user removed the video will ya 2

I mentioned this a few monthes ago. But what the hell. How often do we have a LF thread? I saw the current edition of the Feat at a local radio station promotional gig. Just a 4 song acoustic set,but still fun and I got the "Join the Band" cd they put out. Which features them redoing many of their classics with lots of special guests. Not great,not terrible. But a decent change of pace.
