Okay dokey then, so, what is everyones favourite by the Fab Four?

I must admit, as much as I like Abbey Road, White album etc, I'm more of a Beatle Mania era man myself.

"Shabby Road"

Bought it on holiday in the Isle of Man when I was 11. I think it was one of the first two or three albums I ever bought with my own money. 34 years and a couple of thousand albums later its still one of my favouriye two or three albums of all time.

Yeah, you never forget that "bought with my own money" album. A week after my 10th b'day I bought Abbey Road, which I had been lusting for for some weeks previous.  In the same purchase, 45s of "Hot Fun in the Summertime" by Sly Stone, and "Suspicious Minds" by Elvis.  Grand total: $4.28 US (I still remember getting the change back from a Fiver).

I'm really, really fond of the early stuff - Please Please Me, Beatles For Sale, and With The Beatles. But as far as I'm concerned, Abbey Road was The Beatles at the top of their game.

I'm with you there. But Revolver is my all time fave. I loved the mid 60's sound--everything from '64-'66. As to the later albums, I prefer the White Album. A lot of individual projects, really, but some amazing material on this one!

Wow,no love for the White Album? Not only my favorite Beatles album, but one of my favorite ever. Abbey Road a very close second. I much prefer the later Beatles. The White Album was just so different from their other stuff. Plus being a double album helps as well. From Paul's lovely Mother Nature's Son to John's angst on Yer Blues and everything else in between. Great record.

I wouldnt go as far to say that, but while it has moments which are on a par with anything else they (or any band) ever made, its too long and suffers from a serious amount of filler.

George Martin has long maintained that it should have been a single album. I dont think he's wrong. Maybe in the CD age, it would have worked better as a 75-80 minute single CD, but theres about 20-30 minutes worth of music on it which would have been jettisoned from any other Beatles album.

And that doesnt include Revolution 9, which I personally think is brilliant.

Certainly in their top 3 or 4 for me - but no way is it as great as Abbey Road or Revolver.

I've never heard a Beatles album I didn't like. Same with the Stones. The White Album is huge, diverse, and has moments of real brilliance. I love it.

I always have such a hard time picking one "favorite" when it comes to music.

Revolver for me. Devoid of filler (although "Yellow Submarine" is kinda trite). It's one of the top 5 albums in my book. Amazing stuff and it's less poppy than Rubber Soul gets and less pretentious than Sgt. Pepper gets. Abbey Road would be my second fave perhaps. Of their early work, Hard Day's Night is immaculate. Let me do my usual grading to rank their 11 studio LPs for y'all:

1. Revolver: A+
2. Abbey Road: A+
3. Rubber Soul: A+
4. A Hard Day's Night: A+
5. The White Album: A
6. With the Beatles: A
7. Sgt. Pepper: A
8. Beatles for Sale: A
9. Please Please Me: A-
10. Let it Be: A-
11. Help!: A-

The rest is well documented by Past Masters Volume 1 (A) and 2 (A+). Then after that, it's all scraping the barrel for material. They put out more in 7 years than most do in 27.

I'm with GTRM here.  I did like portions of Soul, as well thought
you could "wake & bake" quite well to Sgt. Peppers.
I'm told there are photos which exist of myself in my first band.
I had some "Moe Howard" type hair going at the time, the same
type of hair those four from Liverpool wore.  I'll have to dig those
out, can you scan Polaroids from the 60's?

Well to be truthful. I haven't listened to much "Beatles" since I played the White Album over and over and over again many many years ago........

Abby or "Shabby" Road IS probably the  preferred of the 2 however...

Being a big, big Beatles fan, like others here too, there isn't an album of theirs that I dislike. They are all sublime, with the exception being - should've been an EP - Yellow Submarine.

I actually voted for Revolver. Over recent years it has seemingly stolen the mantle of 'Greatest Beatles Album' from Abbey Road and there was a time when Sgt Pepper was considered their finest achievement as well, remember. It took me a while to warm to Revolver though; I found it to be a little downbeat in comparison to earlier works, yet its greatness does shine through with repeated listening. Like Abbey Road, it’s a great McCartney album. Great bass playing along with two of his very finest delicate ballads, For No One and the lovely, Here There And Everywhere. What an album.

Keep the votes coming!

After John Lennon got shot in the 80's, I went out & bought a lot of Beatles albums that I had in the 60's, that were worn out, I picked Sgt. Pepper, it's sort of like their greatest accomplishment, If it wasn't for The Beatles, I probably would have never heard of The Stones! so I don't go along with this business of knocking The Beatles! if one was brought up in the 60's, they'd know about this, like Mick said in a interview "They were bigger then Jesus" I love all their albums, especially the early ones, & they were not only a pop band, which a lot of people on this board like to say, they could rock with the best of them, listen to "slow Down" if that's not great rock 'N' Roll, then I don't what is.

My vote was for "The Beatles" (white album) I heard it on peyote and it was like being in heaven the whole albunm is great even the commercial stuff like Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da; this album is the Beatles at his most creative and innovative period

However I love all their albums from Revolver to Let it Be (Abbey Road was their last recording but saw the light of day before Let it Be)

Then I just was into Lennon  smoking more weed is good for your health

On a much brighter note , Paul is now singing Lennon's songs in concert .

I'm with you Honky T Man -- there's not a one I don't love, and I'll even take Yellow Submarine Side One simply by virture of the presence of Only A Northern Song and Hey Bulldog...

Hard call, but just had to go with Rubber Soul -- American OR British version -- pre-acid, marijuana fumes rising just from the cover alone, you wouldn't have had Revolver without it.

Have any of you heard the AMAZING remasters of The Beatles entire catalog by Purple Chick? You can go to Demonoid and enter The Beatles Purple Chick in the search engine. The stereo remaster of the White Album is my favorite at the moment...its on 12CD's featuring both the stereo and mono mixes, demo's, sessions, video mixes...all kinds of stuff!Smiley

Well yes, side A of Yellow Submarine is very good - It's just The Beatles.

I still maintain that Yellow Submarine shouldv'e just been an EP, a similar kind of the release to the excellent Magical Mystery Tour EP. Though, at least that works as a full LP.

Wasn't side 2 of the Capitol release of A Hard Days Night just the George Martin Orchestra?

Wild Honey Pie, Don't Pass Me By, Why Don't We Do It In The Road, Honey Pie, Rocky Racoon, Piggies, I Will, The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill.

The above mentioned tracks are in my opinion, absoloute 100% filler. Take them away, and you are still left with a very long LP. In fact, to come out with a perfect record, there are a few others I personally, could do with out.

The genuine classics on the record, in my opinon, are...

Back In The USSR, Dear Prudance, Glass Onion, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Martha My Dear, I'm So Tired, Blackbird, Julia, Birthday, Yer Blues, Mother Natures Son, Everybody's Got Something To Hide..., Sexy Sadie, Helter Skelter and Cry Baby Cry.

Now thats a killer 16 track album, no?

two songs on each side were orchestral.  The remaining 8 songs were songs that were also on the UK version. The UK version had one side featuring the 7 songs from the movie and side 2 was six non-soundtrack songs (which is the side I personally prefer). Great album. I bought that one the same day as I bought Abbey Road.

Some of those songs arent bad by the standards of 95% of artists, but had they been recorded for any other Beatles album to that point, I'd have been surprised if they would have been included.

I know some of them are "half songs" - which is something they also used on side 2 of Abbey Road, but the ones on that album were far more effective.

I've always loved side 2 of Yellow Submarine. Those George Martin arrangements are beautiful.

My choice too. I'm glad to see that Sgt. Pepper received only one vote so far. In my opinion, it's the most over-rated album of all time.

Always had a real attachment to A Hard Day's Night. It was the first Beatles album I bought as well and You Can't Do That was THE song that got me intio the group. I'm glad they decided to not include it in the film. It makes side 2, along with I'll Be Back and Things We Said Today.

i think you're all missing the genious of the white album. i've seen people suggest don't pass me by, cry baby cry, even why don't we do it in the road are all filler....nothing could be further from the truth! its just that, unlike the beatles' other efforts (abbey road, pepper), the songs don't fit together like a neatly trimmed jigsaw puzzle.

the white album is more of a collection of songs than an album...but what a collection of songs it is!

revolution 9...only filler on the album. well, maybe revolution 1 as well....

Thats because some of them are filler!

I'm not missing it at all, but, speaking as someone who was a Beatles fan before I'd ever heard the Stones and for whom they're still my second favourite band,  I cant wait to hear how "Why dont we do it in the road" can be deemed to be a work of "genius"....

Yes indeed it would. Some of those filler songs are a bit short which can help their case but others are a bit long. I think "Why Don't We Do it..." is good throwaway but "I Will" is not filler to me. What about "Good Night"? Bad choice for album closer and though I understand John wrote it as a lullaby for Julian, why couldn't he just have made it a B-side or put it on a fan-club Christmas record? It's a pretty treacly song. The rest are certainly among the weaker cuts of the album. Those classic songs are indeed classic but I also enjoy "Long Long Long," a really underrated, serene George song and "Revolution 1" ain't bad either. "Savoy Truffle" is a tongue-in-cheek R&B number also.

It would have made a tremendous single LP for sure. White Album would be their best, if not for the songs I have agreed with you on/added. Revolver does have "Yellow Submarine" and while I find "For No One" a bit maudlin and "Got to Get You Into My Life" a bit poppy, they're still good. But "Taxman," "Doctor Robert," "I Want to Tell You," "She Said She Said," "And Your Bird Can Sing" and "Tomorrow Never Knows" are light years ahead of the other rock music going on in 1966. "Here, There and Everywhere" is a tender, tremendous ballad while "Good Day Sunshine" provides some light-hearted pop and "Love You To" and "I'm Only Sleeping" are wonderfully acidic works. Revolver would not have been a perfect 30-track album either though.

I think its an inspired choice of closer - because its such a perfect antidote to the chaos of Revolution 9 which immediately precedes it. A brilliant piece of sequencing. Beautiful song.

Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Please do not go there, Bucky! Wink

Blank Frigging Stare

Wild Honey Pie  -  FUCKING RULES
Why Dont We Do It In the Road  -- RULES THE WHOLE FUCKING UNIVERSE
Long long long -- GORGEOUS
Everybodys got something to hide except for me and my monkey -- ABSOLUTELY ASS KICKING
Cry Baby Cry --  MENACING but trifling
Savoy Truffle -- KILLER
Honey Pie -- Not very good

Some of those songs arent bad by the standards of 95% of artists, but had they been recorded for any other Beatles album to that point, I'd have been surprised if they would have been included.

I know some of them are "half songs" - which is something they also used on side 2 of Abbey Road, but the ones on that album were far more effective.

i think you're all missing the genius of the white album. i've seen people suggest don't pass me by, cry baby cry, even why don't we do it in the road are all filler....nothing could be further from the truth! its just that, unlike the beatles' other efforts (abbey road, pepper), the songs don't fit together like a neatly trimmed jigsaw puzzle.

...

Strangely enough, Bucky's trio of "filler" tunes here are three of the best songs on the album.  And don't you be dissin' Revolution #1 bwah.

Things that are genius about WDWDIITR:  Drums.  Piano.  Length.  Lyric.  That creepy ass guitar lick that comes in halfway into it.  The sinking feeling that this song is somehow "wrong".  The vocal.  To me WaaaaaaaaaaY more avant garde than Revolution #9.  Plus the Lowell Fulsom version kicks ass.

I'll take the White Album over Pepper or Abbey Road any day of the week, for exactly the fact that it's a fractured, raw, sprawling mess, rather than an over-orchestrated over-arranged over-i-dotted bit of control freakage.

actually nasty...i didn't say those songs were filler...i love em!

don't pass me by: best ringo yet! (except rhyming "myself" with "myself"...always hated that line.)

the beatle band does a rawkin' stompin' version of why don't we do it in the road, too....one of my favorite tunes to play, actually.

Excellent lookin' site. Thanks. That said, I'm sure you own Iain McDonald's 'Revolution in the Head'.

Unquestionably the greatest book ever written on rock music.

I was going to mention the MacDonald book Gazza when you cited Long Long Long as filler.  He loved it, saying "at last, the real George," having not cared much for While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

(Strangely, he also didn't like Across the Universe at all either).

I got that, Bucky - but I posted my second-tier commentary before I got into the second page of this thread, so I didn't see that others had been dropping filler charges on these tracks before you stepped up in defense.

You realize that this is a very rare proposition, me stepping up to defend Beatles tracks . . . but I lucked into a mono White Album a few years ago and it was a revelation for me - their most rock and roll post Pepper platter.

I don't know if it's because I ate breathed and slept Beatles in my early teens to the point of OD, or if it's because of the throw-them-in-my-face every three years marketing machine phenomenon, or my contrarian nature, or if because of my profession and in our culture in general they are just so ubiquitous that I can no longer stand them, or if I genuinely think the music is seriously slicked up to the point of fakeness, but listening to most of Sgt. Pepper or side two of Abbey Road or a lot of those late-period singles makes me feel queasy and gross.

But I do have it all.  In pretty nice vinyl editions.  Including clean copies of most of the good US 45s, which are vastly sonically superior to the available CD analogs.  So there is that.  Do I ever listen to their music voluntarily?  Rarely.  But I'm not likely gonna get rid of my I Feel Fine, Day Tripper or Ticket to Ride 45s any sooner than I'll get rid of my 19th Nervous Breakdown.

Magical Mystery Tour is very underrated, sure its not a 'proper' album because it has stuff like Strawberry Fields on it and its a movie sountrack, but songs like Baby You're A Rich Man and I am The Walrus are top notch, although you could argue that Flying and Blue Jay Way is 'filler', but IMO Flying is their best instrumental for pure fun.

that the beatles are ubiquitous is not a reason to dislike them. however, if you've been beatled out, that is a reason not to listen to them. just remember, the music is just as fresh and real now as it was when you were a teenager.

i got zeppelined out. and doorsed out too. and a ton of other bands. i can't listen to a zeppelin song now without breaking out in hives, despite the fact that i think they were one of the greatest and most influential bands ever. do they suck? no. but i still can't listen to them. maybe in 5 years or so.

except black dog. i've always hated that goddamn song.

Bucky..I am with you on this one.

"I can't listen to Zep anymore either.  Nausea ensues.  The Doors only in small doses.  And the Beatles..well they don't have any place in my iPod either.  And if a song comes on my iTunes on shuffle, I immediately skip it...

Overdose or just plan sick of it.  I'm not sure.  Last time I tried to listen to the Beatles was with that "Love" CD.  I think I managed to get through it once.

But if your band ever comes to Ohio..I'll come and see ya! Wink Fuck you Gazza, Will ya?

Disagree - having something repeatedly shoved down your throat is a very valid reason for developing a distaste for it.  And over-exposure actually does lead to spoilage.  While I would never deny anyone the joys of discovering the structural and melodic pleasures of the Beatles catalog, for me the perfectionist tendencies of their "great works" are actually opposed to "real music".

And Black Dog fucking rocks.

I actually bought the White Album after Exile, go figure, but I had heard most of the songs played ad infinitum on FM in the US.

The "Hey, Jude" compilation was one of my first Beatles, and is still a good Young Person's Guide To ~, as it forces you to suss out the different periods jumbled in.  Perhaps no other band managed such compelling odds and sods on one disc.  I recently scored copies of the first (mislabeled) and second pressings really cheap.

Sgt. Pepper, one learns, is 100% bullshit.  But it is the highest quality imported first-water, top-shelf bullshit, of a kind not seen before or since.  It's history-making bullshit, granular and golden as fecund high summer, and no one should begrudge it an A+ for its formative importance.  Four young old pros at the top of their game, knowing it's bullshit, loving the lengths they can take it to, beginning with Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields.  The proof of the happiness and maturity that stopping that touring bullshit brought them.

I still like the mid 60's era best {with Revolver and Rubber Soul, etc.}, but, as I said before, the White Album is my favorite of the latter projects. And, in reading all the comments here, something dawned on me.....this is maybe not exactly true, but I think that the White Album could be called the "Exile" of Beatle albums. Rawer. Not exactly disjointed, but just a series of great songs. I guess Exile is more cohesive, but it has such a raw, "live" feel to it. And the White Album is the least-overdone studio sounding Beatles project I can think of. So, maybe a bit of a parallel? Just two great bands doing what they do best....

Sometimes on long car trips a White Album song will appear on the radio, prompting me to attempt a 2-side edit of Big White in my head, and sometimes on paper at a rest stop.  I notice that even after you cut all the obvious filler or downer tracks...you still have almost three sides of good stuff.  Then you have to scrape up more filler, cringing at what will disappear (Rocky Raccoon?) - or else reinstate some of the cut material (Why don't We do it in the Road?) to fill out a commercially unworkable three full sides.

NB the real coup would have been a three-sided double-album, which Johnny Winter pulled off the following year with Second Winter.

I always like what Paul says in one of the Beatles Anthology interviews, which I paraphrase here: "You can say there's too much of This on it, or too little of That.  But at the end of the day, it's the bloody Beatles' White Album - Shut up!"

Revolver is pretty much the genesis of Big White, being the first modern rock record - i.e., the first completely self-conscious one.

Good post, but Highway 61 Revisited beats Revolver to the state of total self-awareness by about a year.

I like the very early Beatles rock 'N' roll, they did some fantastic albums like Revolver, Rubber soul, but I love Anna, Baby it's you, the soul ballads, they really were so far ahead of their time, they didn't know it at the time, the songwriting of Lennon/McCartney was just fantastic.
What I really loved was George Harrison guitar playing, he copied Carl Perkins, Scottie Moore, Chuck Berry to absolute perfection, & remember it was George who was raving about The Stones at Richmount.

YES!

That was my second Dylan cd, and I bought it the exact same day as Sticky Fingers (also, my second cd, by the Stones). Sometimes I can make an intelligent choice.

Pepper is a novelty record. But so is The Mollusk (1997; Ween).

Revolver, as good as it is, me don't like it too much. Why? John's voice. Also, George's songs, with the exception of Taxman, are my least favorite beatle harrisongs. SORRY.

Of course, "don't like it" should be taken with a grain of salt. It's one of the three or four greatest albums from 1966. The others, probably Blonde On Blonde and Aftermath. And Freak Out! Fresh Cream, a sentimental favorite.

" This is insane
All you did was say hello
Speak my name
Feeling your love
Like a love I used to know
Long ago.

How can it be
You're a different space and time
Come to me.
Feel like I'm home
In a place I used to know
Long ago
Deja vu -
Could you be the dream that I once knew
Is it you
Deja vu -
Could you be the dream that might come true
Shining through

I keep remembering me
I keep remembering you
Deja vu
This is devine
I've been waiting all my life
Filling time
Looking for you
Nights were more than you could know
Long ago

Come to me now
We don't have to dream of love
We know how
Somewhere before
It's as if I've loved you so
So long ago
Deja vu -
Could you be the dream that I once knew
Is it you
Deja vu -
Could you be the dream that might come true?
Shining through
I keep remembering me
I keep remembering you
Deja vu  "

My fave is Rubber Soul, closely followed by Revolver.

These are the inspired sound of The Beatles, when recording and writing still sounded innovative and new and they sounded like an integrated band.

Sgt Pepper was too studied and contrived for my liking. It's one of the least listened to in my Beatles collection.

The White Album and Abbey Road are great but they sound like they could have been great solo albums, not a bunch of band-orientated songs.

I recently downloaded the 3 Anthologies from the mid 90's. These were got me hooked on The Beatles in the first place. Although I think they dont hold up to repeated listening I still think they are a fascinating listen at first.....
