I actually bought the White Album after Exile, go figure, but I had heard most of the songs played ad infinitum on FM in the US.

The "Hey, Jude" compilation was one of my first Beatles, and is still a good Young Person's Guide To ~, as it forces you to suss out the different periods jumbled in.  Perhaps no other band managed such compelling odds and sods on one disc.  I recently scored copies of the first (mislabeled) and second pressings really cheap.

Sgt. Pepper, one learns, is 100% bullshit.  But it is the highest quality imported first-water, top-shelf bullshit, of a kind not seen before or since.  It's history-making bullshit, granular and golden as fecund high summer, and no one should begrudge it an A+ for its formative importance.  Four young old pros at the top of their game, knowing it's bullshit, loving the lengths they can take it to, beginning with Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields.  The proof of the happiness and maturity that stopping that touring bullshit brought them.

I still like the mid 60's era best {with Revolver and Rubber Soul, etc.}, but, as I said before, the White Album is my favorite of the latter projects. And, in reading all the comments here, something dawned on me.....this is maybe not exactly true, but I think that the White Album could be called the "Exile" of Beatle albums. Rawer. Not exactly disjointed, but just a series of great songs. I guess Exile is more cohesive, but it has such a raw, "live" feel to it. And the White Album is the least-overdone studio sounding Beatles project I can think of. So, maybe a bit of a parallel? Just two great bands doing what they do best....

Sometimes on long car trips a White Album song will appear on the radio, prompting me to attempt a 2-side edit of Big White in my head, and sometimes on paper at a rest stop.  I notice that even after you cut all the obvious filler or downer tracks...you still have almost three sides of good stuff.  Then you have to scrape up more filler, cringing at what will disappear (Rocky Raccoon?) - or else reinstate some of the cut material (Why don't We do it in the Road?) to fill out a commercially unworkable three full sides.

NB the real coup would have been a three-sided double-album, which Johnny Winter pulled off the following year with Second Winter.

I always like what Paul says in one of the Beatles Anthology interviews, which I paraphrase here: "You can say there's too much of This on it, or too little of That.  But at the end of the day, it's the bloody Beatles' White Album - Shut up!"

Revolver is pretty much the genesis of Big White, being the first modern rock record - i.e., the first completely self-conscious one.

I like the very early Beatles rock 'N' roll, they did some fantastic albums like Revolver, Rubber soul, but I love Anna, Baby it's you, the soul ballads, they really were so far ahead of their time, they didn't know it at the time, the songwriting of Lennon/McCartney was just fantastic.
What I really loved was George Harrison guitar playing, he copied Carl Perkins, Scottie Moore, Chuck Berry to absolute perfection, & remember it was George who was raving about The Stones at Richmount.

You gave me something, I understand,
You gave me loving in the palm of my hand
I cant tell you how I feel
My heart is like a wheel
Let me roll it
Let me roll it to you
Let me roll it
Let me toll it to you

I want to tell you
And nows the time
I want to tell you that
Youre going to be mine

I cant tell you how I feel
My heart is like a wheel.
Let me roll it
Let me roll it to you
Let me roll it
Let me roll it to you

YES!

That was my second Dylan cd, and I bought it the exact same day as Sticky Fingers (also, my second cd, by the Stones). Sometimes I can make an intelligent choice.

Pepper is a novelty record. But so is The Mollusk (1997; Ween).

Revolver, as good as it is, me don't like it too much. Why? John's voice. Also, George's songs, with the exception of Taxman, are my least favorite beatle harrisongs. SORRY.

Of course, "don't like it" should be taken with a grain of salt. It's one of the three or four greatest albums from 1966. The others, probably Blonde On Blonde and Aftermath. And Freak Out! Fresh Cream, a sentimental favorite.

18. Band On The Run with Dave Grohl on guitar (Foofighters)
19. Back In The USSR with Dave Grohl joining Abe on drums (Grohl had his own drum kit)
