1971 GOODBYE BRITAIN - UK TOUR
‘Goodbye Britain’ 1971 Tour overview
By early 1971,
the Stones’ finances were in serious disarray and faced with the punitive 98%
‘supertax’ imposed on high earners by the Conservative government, the only
logical alternative was to leave the UK, with the entire band decamping to the
south of France. Before the tax year ended however, they went back on the road
again with a brief trek around England (plus one night in Scotland) ominously
titled as the ‘Goodbye Britain’ tour. A
sixteen-date itinerary was crammed into eleven days with seven of the nine
cities visited being treated to a matinee and an evening set. All of the shows took
place in small theatres or dance halls with an average capacity of around 2,000
where the Stones usually played sets of around 12-14 songs, showcasing a few
songs from the ‘Sticky Fingers’ album, which would be released the month after
the tour.
Twelve days after
the tour ended, the Stones filmed a TV special at the Marquee Club in London.
Dissatisfied with the results, the band only allowed the broadcast to be aired
in continental Europe. It would eventually be released officially on CD and DVD
in 2015. As it’s not a tour show, it’s documented in the ‘Miscellaneous
Non-Tour Concerts’ section.
This tour is a
bit of a nightmare to document accurately. Of the 16 shows, there are only
verified audio recordings three of them (Coventry, Leeds, and London) and even
contemporary reviews of the shows and subsequent biographies provide conflicting
evidence regarding the setlists. Whilst
there are no circulating performances of ‘Wild Horses’, ‘Sympathy for the
Devil’, ‘Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’ and ‘I Got The Blues’, there are eyewitness reports which indicate that
each of them were played even if only a couple of times apiece. Therefore, the setlists page for this tour
contains a lot of educated guesses. I’m indebted to the users on iorr.org for
their research and first-hand accounts which helped those guesses to be better
than they could have been!
Of the available
shows, Coventry is a mediocre audience recording albeit a good performance,
Leeds has long circulated as a radio broadcast/soundboard of all but the two
opening numbers and the final show at the tour at the London Roundhouse is a
decent recording of most of the gig.
In June 2015, the
‘Sticky Fingers’ deluxe reissue featured five songs culled from the two
Roundhouse concerts (two of them from the previously uncirculated early show)
which turned out to be somewhat frustrating as the performances are outstanding
and makes one salivate at the thought that the full shows must be available
(it’s known that the Stones had the shows in Brighton, Liverpool, Leeds and London recorded on multi-track). The Super Deluxe reissue included an extra disc
which consisted of the full Leeds show in excellent stereo.
