1972 North American Tour Overview

The Stones spent late 1971 and early 1972 finishing the sprawling double album ‘Exile on Main St’ which was released in the spring and was followed by their biggest tour to date, an almost two-month trek around North American arenas consisting of 51 concerts. The band are widely regarded as having peaked with this album and this tour, and the audio evidence makes for a very strong case on both fronts. The opening show in Vancouver saw an 18-song set, half of which consisted of songs from the new album, although by the time the band settled on a regular setlist of around 15 songs, that was pared down to half a dozen. This tour also marked the first time where Keith took over on lead vocals for one song (‘Happy’), a trend that would continue until it was increased to two from 1989.  Stevie Wonder served as the opening act for the whole tour and the two acts combined for a medley of ‘Uptight’ and ‘Satisfaction’ as an encore for half a dozen shows in Philadelphia and New York at the end of the tour, which finished on Mick Jagger’s 29th birthday.

The tour was documented in two movies.  One of them, Robert Frank’s ‘Cocksucker Blues’ concentrated more on the offstage debauchery than the music and for that reason as well as the title it remains officially unreleased, although bootleg copies circulate.  It’s not as dramatic or outrageous as the title suggests. The four shows in Fort Worth and Houston on June 24-25 were filmed and edited together for a concert movie ‘Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones’ which briefly appeared in cinemas in March 1974 and was eventually released on DVD in 2010 as part of a programme of archive releases to tie in with the deluxe reissue of ‘Exile on Main St’.  The movie’s soundtrack was eventually released on CD in 2017.

The shows in Fort Worth and Philadelphia were edited for a live album which ended up being scrapped due to contractual issues with ABKCO regarding the pre-1971 material, although soundboards of the shows circulate.

Number of shows – 51

Number of shows in circulation - 41

Recommended shows – the soundboard recordings from Fort Worth, Philadelphia, and the 8-song ‘Welcome to New York’ bootleg from the final show in New York (26/7/72).  The best run of shows on the tour for me are the run of gigs in early July especially Norfolk and Charlotte although these only circulate as audience recordings.

Personnel – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman with Nicky Hopkins (piano), Bobby Keys (sax), Jim Price (trumpet/trombone) and occasionally Ian Stewart (piano)
