European Tour 1970 overview
After the
chaos of 1969, the first year of the new decade seemed anti-climactic by
comparison. The Stones spent much of
1970 recording tracks for ‘Sticky Fingers’, which would be, when released in
April 1971, their first album on their own record label.
In between
sessions and various legal wrangles with ABKCO and Decca, the band spent six
weeks on the road in continental Europe, performing 25 shows in eight countries
in what was a somewhat bizarre itinerary which included no less than five
concerts in Denmark. The setlists for
the tour were pretty static with the band performing
13-15 songs per show, except for the opening two concerts which featured
sixteen songs apiece. The format
remained similar to the 1969 US tour, with three
different songs being added, the newly recorded but still unreleased ‘Dead
Flowers’ and two Chuck Berry covers – ‘Let It Rock’ (which they’d never played
before) and ‘Roll Over Beethoven’ (back in the set after a six-year hiatus).
Indeed, with ‘Little Queenie’ still being performed nightly, this made it three
Berry songs in the regular setlist and a total of six covers from the 16 songs
performed during the course of the tour. With the band regularly featuring ‘Brown
Sugar’, ‘You Gotta Move’ and ‘Dead Flowers’ from the
upcoming album, it resulted in a show which featured a lot of unfamiliar
material to the European audiences. A
major change from the previous year’s tour was that for the first time, the
Stones’ onstage personnel was supplemented by the addition of a horn section,
with Bobby Keys on sax and Jim Price on trombone being added to the line-up.
This remains
something of a ‘lost tour’. None of the
shows have ever been released officially in audio or visual format, and most of
what circulates does so in relatively primitive audience recordings by today’s
standards, with many of them being incomplete. The first Paris show was broadcast live on
French radio, albeit from an audience source with a bloody annoying DJ talking over
the start of each song (although someone did manage to edit a decent recording
together which omits the voiceovers). The second night in Paris does circulate
as a nice mono soundboard (albeit just the first 11 songs) and that one is
probably the show from the tour that I’d recommend most. It’s a pity that there are no pristine
recordings from this run of shows because it does find the band in top form
throughout. Hopefully someday the 1970
European Tour will get an archive release that does it
justice.
