(Excerpted from Angelina, An Unauthorized Biography by Andrew Morton. By way of background, during much of the period of her involvement with Jagger, she had five other intense love affairs going on at the same time! 1) With her ex-husband Trainspotting actor Jonny Lee Miller 2) With her husband-to-be Billy Bob Thorton 3) With actor and ladies man Timothy Hutton 4) With shaved-head model Jenny Shimizu, and 5) with heroin, which she was smoking habitually. Each knew very little about the others. Apparently Angelina compartmentalizes quite well. Also by way of background, Angelina's mother, Marcheline Bertrand, was a huge fan of Mick and the Stones and named her 1975 newborn daughter "Angie" partly because of the song)
In 1997 Angelina had at first turned down the chance to perform as a stripper in the latest Rolling Stones video "Anybody Seen My Baby?" It was only endless pleading by Marcheline, who utterly idolized the band and knew all their lyrics by heart. "Please, darling; please do it for me," Marche begged...
Jagger may have not found his baby in the video, but he knew he wanted to find out more about the sexy woman standing half-naked before him. Much more. It was the beginning of a two-year quest that was as decadent and depraved as any event in the Stones' storied sexual lexicon - a magnificent if frustrating obsession as Jagger, at the time fifty-four and still married to Jerry Hall, then pregnant with the fourth of their children, pursued this erotic vision around the world...
Central to this unfolding drama was Angie's mother, who now lived vicariously through her daughter. Angie was everything her quiet, reserved, passive earth mother could never be: wild, adventurous, sexy, a rock-and-roll chick. Enter into this mix Mick Jagger. Marche had adored him from afar since she was a teenager. As unhealthy as it was, it was perhaps understandable Angie's relationship with the rock-and-roll roue. For the next two years, unbeknownst to her daughter, she played cupid, encouraging Jagger and advising him on how best to pursue his suit with Angie, eager for them to marry one day...
It was not long before Marcheline was planning her daughter's wedding in France. She decided that afterward she would live in an annex of her daughter's home with Jagger. "Marche loved Mick for Angie," recalls a family friend. "She felt he could teach her about fame and how to handle it"...
Marche's fantasy actually seemed within reach. Certainly Jagger's phone messages indicated he was willing to give up everything for the object of his desire. He courted Angie assiduously, reduced to a "sniveling wretch" in the face of her seductive disregard. For once it was a case of the biter bit, as he left Angie endless telephone messages, pleading, beeseeching, begging her to speak to him and then meet him. "Angelina, why aren't you calling me? Where are you? Please phone me," Mick, one of the world's great Lotharios, implored. Unfortunately he left these messages on the wrong phone. During the video shoot he had asked Angie for her number, but such was her indifference that she gave him her mother's number instead...
When Mick finally managed to speak with Angie, he invited her to join him in Florida while the band took a break from the Bridges to Babylon tour. Though she spent time with him, she refused to have sex, claiming she was having her period, but she was just messing with his head...
Still the Rolling Stones singer persisted. Knowing that Angie was nominally married but dating, he cooked up a plan. Jagged Films approached her (ex) husband Jonny Lee Miller about a role they were casting in Enigma. Jagger assumed that since Miller and Angie were still good friends, she would visit him on the set...
When Angie confronted Jagger about this scheme, he confirmed her suspicions. Angie was furious, screaming that she never wanted to see or speak to him again...
Jagger paid a high emotional price, falling into a deep depression as a result of Angie's silence. Angie's heart thawed only after Stones drummer Charlie Watts called her and pleaded with her to call Jagger, as he was in utter despair. Reluctantly, she agreed to resume their relationship, and the love-struck rocker invited her to join him on tour in Brazil in April 1998...
Meanwhile, her mother was busy mapping out Angie's future. With Jonny Lee Miller finally divorced, she went to see her regular psychic to ask the chances of Angie marrying Mick. The psychic was blunt, telling her that Angie would marry an older man, but it was not going to be Jagger. Marcheline was devastated - but determined to prove the psychic wrong...
While in Toronto filming, Angie and her new lover, Billy Bob Thornton, headed over to the Skydome to watch the Rolling Stones in concert, unaware of yet another scheme by the besotted Mick Jagger. Previously Jagger had invited Angie to the show and to party with him afterwards, but she had graciously declined. So Jagger called Billy Bob and invited the entire cast and crew. Now Angie was obliged to go. At the time Mick didn't know about Billy Bob and Angie, and vice versa. During a break in the show, when the stage was ceded to Keith Richards, a security guard came up to Angie and said, "Mick Jagger would like you to go backstage and meet him." Jagger gave her a cashmere sweater, and they made out until he had to go back onstage...
Later, when Angie was filming in New York, Jagger invited her to the Stones concert in Philadelphia. She attended the gig but, much to Mick's chagrin, did not hang out with him. More revealing than her teasing indifference toward Jagger was the dance of deception between Angie and her mother. She called Marcheline after the concert and told her that Jagger had asked her to marry him. Her mother was thrilled and called Mick to congratulate him. He was utterly bemused (and started to distance himself from Marcheline)...
Ironically, with the freeze between Mick and her mother, Angie started feeling much warmer toward him. Jagger, not known for his largesse, had sent her a pair of $5000 earrings. In May 1999 she was thinking of joining him in Brazil during the No Security tour. Her friends were alarmed. The same month he had fathered a child by Brazilan model Luciana Jimenez - and yet Angie was going to Rio de Janeiro to be with the singer. "I told her she was out of her fucking mind to have anything to do with him," recalls a close friend. "But she didn't take a blind bit of notice. It was all part of her great adventure"...
One day her dad Jon Voight confronted her about Jagger, "Dark side, dark side, these people are a bad influence." It was all Angie could do not to laugh. "Dad, if anybody is a bad influence, including on the Rolling Stones, I am."
Her father had no idea just how bad. One night Angie took her Jumpin' Jack Flash to a bondage club in New York. During the visit, she told friends that they were both whipped. "That was Angie," said one of the friends. "She might have only slept with four men, but she was a total sexual deviant." Angie told Time magazine, "S and M focuses you. It's a wierd cleansing of self."
Not yet married to Billy Bob, Angie began her quest to have a child, telling a "stunned" Mick Jagger that she planned to adopt a Native American baby, whom she would name after him as a celebration of their relationship. How serious she was remains an open question (as her attempt to adopt a Native American was unsuccessful, despite her mother attending tribal seminars in search of a baby Mick)
(Not long afterwards, Angie's thing with Billy Bob really caught fire and captured the world's attention as they publically slobbered all over each other for a year or so. Then, when their marriage broke up almost as quickly as it started, she would have her last fling with Mick in Cambodia, walking the ruins of Anghor together, while she was there on adoption business.)
