Nothing to be surprised about, here: another wonderful performance by Mick.

Now, can Keith keep up with this man over the course of a World Tour? Hmm…

There is no way that was a lip sync.  I'm with Corgi - how do you lip sync the ad libs?  I watched it live and didn't think it was.

After a knock performance like that I'm hoping it gives Mick the performing bug though.

Just watched it on my phone via You Tube.

For a guy who hasnt been on a stage for over a year and considering that was a live TV appearance, that was a pretty good performance. It seemed to bring the house down.

Didnt think it was as sensational as some others did (it was an easy choice of song - would have loved to have seen him sing 'Cry To Me' instead, but that wouldnt have got the crowd worked up the same way and 90% of them probably wouldnt have known it), but he did very well and I dont think anyone could really complain about his performance.

Ok, so now that we're all agreed you've still 'got it', Mick, how about you perform a bit more often than five minutes a year?

I'm still outraged that they dressed Stevie Wonder in a giant peacock outfit and had Paltrow on top of his piano!

Dylan's singing Maggies Farm. his voice is shot. Harmonicas great! Back ups are really good.

well, yeah his voice has been 'shot' - for all conventional purposes - for about 25 years. Its not gonna get any better at this stage. Its all in the phrasing these days.

Bob on a cheesy, mainstream Tv awards show - I feared the worst, but I kinda liked it. He does his own thing and to hell with everyone else.  In a perverse way, I like seeing some of the outrage from the sort of music fans who cant see beyond the synthetic slickness of most of the performers on these shows.

Not as great as his Grammy performances in 1980, 1998 or 2002 - but still better than the 'Masters of War' trainwreck he did in '91 when he got the Lifetime Achievement Award which prompted one critic to ask in all seriousness if he was singing in Hebrew..  Smiley

A good showcase with two of the best new bands around. The Avett Brothers are especially excellent. I liked the 'hootenanny' feel to the whole thing.

Why is this considered an achievement ? No wonder he puts him to shame - he's fucking shit!

If you look at almost every post on YouTube now that features any act over 50, you only have to scroll down a comment or two to find some post along the lines of 'this is real music - not that Justin Bieber/Lady Ga Ga crap'.

WE shouldn't need to defend OUR music by having to compare it to soulless, plastic crap that isn't even on the same planet.

Very good performance. Lip sync? Are you serious. I knew we'd find a flaw but that's out there, no way that was lip synced. That's just crazy talk.

And Rihanna is too hot.

MICK THE MAGNIFICENT.  Grin

He was amazing! Completely the performance of the night, even for non-Stones freaks. Smiley

I was up and DANCIN'.....woo! Couldn't sit down. One of my fave early Stones performances was when they went from "Mona" to "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love". Nothin' more exciting!!!

When I saw that I thought the audio drifted off sync, unless they have some prohibition against music actually being performed live.

That's obviously a new vocal, it sure isn't the original album version and I am pretty sure it's not the Wiltern or Olympia.

I loved it.  It was the natural choice of song for the occasion, like a New Orleans second line following a funeral.
Not sure why some people think a more difficult, or challenging, song was needed. It's not figure skating after all. By the same token, since the song is basically an extended vamp, I don't really see why the rest of the Stones couldn't have rehearsed that one tune. I reckon because it would take a team of lawyers six weeks to work out the specifics for each band member. Either Way, Raphael Siddiq and his band were great and Mick reminded everyone what a great frontman he is. It also doomed Barbra Streisand who followed him, which gives me a guilty chuckle.  I'm sure Solomon would've approved.

Now a question for those who may know, was the cape he shook off at the beginning last night the same cape Solomon Burke gave him at the Wiltern that time?

Mick TOOK the Grammy stage as his own.....he is amazing...and TOUR READY indeed!  It was wonderful!  He stole the show, hands down baby.

Bob was great too, but the camera was not in good position and he was miked poorly.   I wish they would have used a stationary long shot so I could see his full Jolsonesque delivery.  He was going for it!

xoxoxo,
Martha

Mick did bring the house down!  And he did it without fires, lights, cheesy costumes, cheesy dancers, and cheesy theatrics...
My one criticism...I just wish he would have done a medley instead of carrying the one song on for way way too long.

As for Dylan.. Everyone knows his voice is shot!  But I admire the man as he continues to want to make music and does it his own way.  He sure looked like he was having a good time!  And those two bands (both of whom I love) were just thrilled to be out there on the stage with him.

I didnt say I think it was needed. If I'd the choice, I'd have preferred 'Cry To Me'. Just a personal preference because he does soul ballads pretty well. 'Everybody Needs Somebody' was the obvious and right choice for the occasion.

And you're right about it being regrettable that the Stones couldnt have bothered their arses to get together for a few hours to rehearse this. Pretty much what I said at the start of the thread. A missed opportunity to show the world that they still EXIST. A song thats pretty easy to play and which they nailed night after night on the Licks tour.

Somewhat intriguingly, the guitarist playing with Bob was none other than Harvey Mandel - formerly of Canned Heat, and who plays guitar on 'Hot Stuff' and 'Memory Motel' on 'Black and Blue' - ie, the guy who almost replaced Mick Taylor in the Stones.

Stu Kimball has already announced he's playing guitar with Dylan on tour in 2011. Will Mandel be replacing Charlie Sexton?

It would have been so cool is after he finished the song, the lights went down then the curtain rises and it's the rest of the Stones. Then they play Plundered...

Do you think the ideal was ever brought up to Keith at all. Or was this a not so subtle FU to Keith for the book. Even if it wasn't intentional. People are talking about Mick's onstage performance and not what he wrote in a book. Me thinks that's a good thing. stu-smiling
