Title: Mick Jagger @ The Grammys
Post by Gimme Shelter on Feb 3rd, 2011 at 6:15am
The Recording Academy is finally getting some satisfaction, with Mick Jagger's first appearance on the Grammy stage.

(AP)The Rolling Stones frontman will perform at the Feb. 13 ceremony as part of a tribute to soul great Solomon Burke, who died last year. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer opened for the Rolling Stones several times during his career comeback late in life.

Jagger will perform with soul singer Raphael Saadiq during the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, which will air live on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles (8 p.m. EST).

"We're thrilled, delighted, excited and very much looking forward to Mick doing his debut on the Grammy stage," said Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Recording Academy. "It's extraordinary to many of us that the fact is, this will be the first time; he has never performed on the Grammy stage."

This won't be Jagger's first appearance on a Grammy telecast. In 1986, the Rolling Stones were given a lifetime achievement award by Eric Clapton, and they performed on the show by satellite.

"We did a remote from London, and it was at least three o'clock there," said show producer Ken Ehrlich.

"I think they had been celebrating a little time before we went on camera," he said. "It was quite a moment."

Ehrlich has produced the show for 31 years and has always wanted Jagger and the Stones to perform, but it didn't work out until this year.

Ehrlich said it was Jagger's admiration for Burke that brought him to the Grammy stage.

"He's asked me not to go into detail about what he's doing, but I think when you see the performance, it will make a lot sense," said Ehrlich. "I think it was the idea of the performance that was intriguing to him and really brought him here."

Jagger will join a performers list that includes Rihanna, Cee Lo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Eminem, Arcade Fire, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Usher, Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum and Justin Bieber.

Phew! When I saw the thread title and realised Mixk was playing solo at the Grammys, I figured it might have been a special award to mark the 25th anniversary of 'She's The Boss'...

A Solomon Burke tribute? Pretty cool. Good on Mick for being part of it.

Cant help but think its another opportunity missed, though. Would it have been that difficult for the Stones as a band to have spent a few hours of their precious time rehearsing a cover of 'Everybody Needs Somebody to Love' or 'Cry to Me' ?

No they didn't. They were presented with the award in London by Clapton and the speeches were broadcast live via satellite but they didnt 'perform'.

A Stones performance would have been a major media event and would have reminded the world that they're still a living, breathing entity - whereas no one outside of a few fan forums gives a fuck about a solo appearance at it by any of them.

Mick Jagger will make his first-ever live appearance at the Grammy Awards on February 13. The singer will be taking part in the ceremony's annual "In Memoriam" segment, and will pay tribute to the late gospel soul great Solomon Burke, who died last October. Jagger will be accompanied by Raphael Saadiq and his band.

Despite his long and widely celebrated career in music, Jagger has only once before appeared in a Grammy Awards telecast, in 1986, when he and the rest of the Rolling Stones were presented with the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award via satellite from London.

He was absolutely off his tits (plus, in fairness it WAS something like 2 or 3 am when they filmed it, so some 'refreshments' had probably been taken!)

When did you ever see another Stones media event where CHARLIE was the most animated band member?  ;D

Was that Charlie making that shrieking noise like a meerkat in labour when Clapton is doing his speech?

Does anyone get the feeling that this is more about creating publicity for the Grammys by getting a huge name like Mick to come on and do a duet or two with some younger singers than it is about celebrating Solomon Burke? Even with Solomon Burke, most media would first mention his weight and then the wonderful songs and amazing voice. It just strikes me as a little bit odd that they would pick him when they don't do it for many others. Still maybe someone in the Grammy organization had a soft spot for him.

Yeah your right. Solomon Burke isn't the most well known name to a lot of people. But they got Jagger's attention with the idea. So that's a good thing.

Mick still kills.  He scared the shit out of Streisand, who next started her own song like the Aguilara National Anthem.

He scared that guitar player, too, chasing him up the stairs.  Anybody know that guy's name?  He's this year's "Soy Bomb."

No knock against the captures above and below - but it played better than it captured, even with the lip-synch.

Mick Jagger and Raphael Saadiq Conjure Solomon Burke's Spirit at Grammys

Posted on Feb 13th 2011 by Brian Voerding

Matt Sayles, AP

In his Grammy debut, Mick Jagger conjured the outsized spirit -- and wardrobe -- of soul singer Solomon Burke, who died last year. The show-stopping performance came immediately after the show's annual In Memoriam segment.

Jagger, in a tribute to "The King of Rock 'n' Soul," strutted onstage wearing a luscious gold cape, a nod to the traditional royalty garb Burke loved performing in. He and Raphael Saadiq dove into a performance of one of Burke's most well-known hits, 'Everybody Needs Somebody to Love' and strutted across the stage, thrusting his fists toward the audience and at one point pulled the standing crowd into a series of call and responses.

At times, it was easy to forget that Jagger fronts a rock band and not a blistering soul group, watching him bow and stutter-step and swing his way across the stage with the interminable energy of a superstar soul singer. At one point, he drew guitarist Raphael Saadiq into the fray, chasing him around the stage and finished the song with an extended chorus refrain that felt -- if Grammy producers had been willing -- as if it could have carried well toward the dawn.

The only other time Jagger has appeared at the Grammys was via satellite a quarter-century ago when the Rolling Stones accepted a lifetime achievement award. Maybe he knew his first time in person needed to be something unforgettable. He delivered.

This was all live singing. Mick's not gonna lyp sync in front of a live audience. The guy may stoop to a lower level or two every now and again but he's not gonna disgrace himself by lip syncing in front of a live audience and/or on world-wide television.

Geesh let's give the guy some credit and respect.... Some people are acting as if he's just another Brittany Spears lip syncing away or something...

Meaning .... there may of been a choppiness or a sort of delay in a spot due to youtube's stream, or your ISP that made it appear that way to some. However, never did I see it on any of the clips I watched. There were no indications of any lip syncing. Every time he sang you heard it .... and no ....there was not any of Micks vocals occurring without him singing into the mic. Sounded live, looked live, and it was....

Just watched it on my phone via You Tube.

For a guy who hasnt been on a stage for over a year and considering that was a live TV appearance, that was a pretty good performance. It seemed to bring the house down.

Didnt think it was as sensational as some others did (it was an easy choice of song - would have loved to have seen him sing 'Cry To Me' instead, but that wouldnt have got the crowd worked up the same way and 90% of them probably wouldnt have known it), but he did very well and I dont think anyone could really complain about his performance.

Ok, so now that we're all agreed you've still 'got it', Mick, how about you perform a bit more often than five minutes a year?

well, yeah his voice has been 'shot' - for all conventional purposes - for about 25 years. Its not gonna get any better at this stage. Its all in the phrasing these days.

Bob on a cheesy, mainstream Tv awards show - I feared the worst, but I kinda liked it. He does his own thing and to hell with everyone else.  In a perverse way, I like seeing some of the outrage from the sort of music fans who cant see beyond the synthetic slickness of most of the performers on these shows.

Not as great as his Grammy performances in 1980, 1998 or 2002 - but still better than the 'Masters of War' trainwreck he did in '91 when he got the Lifetime Achievement Award which prompted one critic to ask in all seriousness if he was singing in Hebrew..  [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

A good showcase with two of the best new bands around. The Avett Brothers are especially excellent. I liked the 'hootenanny' feel to the whole thing.

Why is this considered an achievement ? No wonder he puts him to shame - he's fucking shit!

If you look at almost every post on YouTube now that features any act over 50, you only have to scroll down a comment or two to find some post along the lines of 'this is real music - not that Justin Bieber/Lady Ga Ga crap'.

WE shouldn't need to defend OUR music by having to compare it to soulless, plastic crap that isn't even on the same planet.

Very good performance. Lip sync? Are you serious. I knew we'd find a flaw but that's out there, no way that was lip synced. That's just crazy talk.

And Rihanna is too hot.

MICK THE MAGNIFICENT.  ;D

He was amazing! Completely the performance of the night, even for non-Stones freaks. :)

I was up and DANCIN'.....woo! Couldn't sit down. One of my fave early Stones performances was when they went from "Mona" to "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love". Nothin' more exciting!!!

When I saw that I thought the audio drifted off sync, unless they have some prohibition against music actually being performed live.

That's obviously a new vocal, it sure isn't the original album version and I am pretty sure it's not the Wiltern or Olympia.

I loved it.  It was the natural choice of song for the occasion, like a New Orleans second line following a funeral.
Not sure why some people think a more difficult, or challenging, song was needed. It's not figure skating after all. By the same token, since the song is basically an extended vamp, I don't really see why the rest of the Stones couldn't have rehearsed that one tune. I reckon because it would take a team of lawyers six weeks to work out the specifics for each band member. Either Way, Raphael Siddiq and his band were great and Mick reminded everyone what a great frontman he is. It also doomed Barbra Streisand who followed him, which gives me a guilty chuckle.  I'm sure Solomon would've approved.

Now a question for those who may know, was the cape he shook off at the beginning last night the same cape Solomon Burke gave him at the Wiltern that time?

Mick TOOK the Grammy stage as his own.....he is amazing...and TOUR READY indeed!  It was wonderful!  He stole the show, hands down baby.

Bob was great too, but the camera was not in good position and he was miked poorly.   I wish they would have used a stationary long shot so I could see his full Jolsonesque delivery.  He was going for it!

Mick did bring the house down!  And he did it without fires, lights, cheesy costumes, cheesy dancers, and cheesy theatrics...
My one criticism...I just wish he would have done a medley instead of carrying the one song on for way way too long.

As for Dylan.. Everyone knows his voice is shot!  But I admire the man as he continues to want to make music and does it his own way.  He sure looked like he was having a good time!  And those two bands (both of whom I love) were just thrilled to be out there on the stage with him.

I didnt say I think it was needed. If I'd the choice, I'd have preferred 'Cry To Me'. Just a personal preference because he does soul ballads pretty well. 'Everybody Needs Somebody' was the obvious and right choice for the occasion.

And you're right about it being regrettable that the Stones couldnt have bothered their arses to get together for a few hours to rehearse this. Pretty much what I said at the start of the thread. A missed opportunity to show the world that they still EXIST. A song thats pretty easy to play and which they nailed night after night on the Licks tour.

Somewhat intriguingly, the guitarist playing with Bob was none other than Harvey Mandel - formerly of Canned Heat, and who plays guitar on 'Hot Stuff' and 'Memory Motel' on 'Black and Blue' - ie, the guy who almost replaced Mick Taylor in the Stones.

Stu Kimball has already announced he's playing guitar with Dylan on tour in 2011. Will Mandel be replacing Charlie Sexton?

Do you think the ideal was ever brought up to Keith at all. Or was this a not so subtle FU to Keith for the book. Even if it wasn't intentional. People are talking about Mick's onstage performance and not what he wrote in a book. Me thinks that's a good thing. :smilestu

How many people in the world can pull of a performance like that? Zero. He truly is amazing and it's amazing how he had the entire crowd mesmerized. I know it's stating the obvious but no one can even come close to him and what he does. The other thing is that he showed the world what true rhythm and blues and soul is. I only watched the bits before Jagger's performance to make sure I didn't miss it and the only thing worth watching was Dylan. That Aretha Franklin tribute was unbearable.

Mick's performance was by far the best of the night, without a doubt, he did it with just his singing & moves, didn't need all the other theatrical props most of the rest used, he's in fine form for sure for a tour, I just hope he doesn't get it in his head to do a solo tour.

Actually I didn't have you in mind when I wrote that, I'm all for "Cry To Me" - fantastic song and I love  Stones version.  I'd have loved to hear Mick do  Down In The Valley or Home In your Heart as well. I was thinking of a bunch of folks on a iorr.org thread that kept going on about him needing to a song with "a greater degree of difficulty" to prove he can still sing.

Good question. He did seem a bit tired at the end of that. But like you said,he put everything into that one performance. I'm sure with pacing and more shows he'll be fine. He doesn't have to run around like that on every song, every night.

Mick put a lot into that one-song performance.

Anyone think he can do that for two hours, every other night for an entire tour?

Good question. He did seem a bit tired at the end of that. But like you said,he put everything into that one performance. I'm sure with pacing and more shows he'll be fine. He doesn't have to run around like that on every song, every night.

Mick once said in a rolling stone interview, the one "Jagger remembers" that he paces himself so that he's got slow numbers, combined with faster ones so not to tire himself out.

What is it with the trainers though. Nice suits and shirts, but he spoils it with horrible footwear.

And while we are on the subject, L'Wren doesn't really flatter him. She looks more like an accessory.

right now? No.

Despite how good he was the other night, at 67 to get ready for a tour requires a lot of preparation and a pretty solid fitness regime. He's not going to be in that kind of condition as he's sung no more than two songs in public in the last three and a half years.

However, he's the ultimate professional when it comes to something like that, and you can guarantee that by the time a tour does come around he'll be in the best condition its possible for him to be in, even though by necessity it'll be natural for him to pace himself to whatever intensity level is necessary for him to consistently perform well for a prolonged period.

" Priapism , ..............Ronnie  ?!!!! "

" Priapism (Ancient Greek: πριαπισμός), known also as Hulseyism, is a potentially harmful and painful medical condition in which the erect penis or clitoris[1] does not return to its flaccid state, despite the absence of both physical and psychological stimulation, within four hours. There are two types of priapism: low-flow and high-flow. Low-flow involves the blood not adequately returning to the body from the organ. High-flow involves a short-circuit of the vascular system partway along the organ. Treatment is different for each type. Priapism is considered a medical emergency, which should receive proper treatment by a qualified medical practitioner. Early treatment can be beneficial for a functional recovery.

The name comes from the Greek god Priapus, who was noted for his disproportionately large and permanent erection. "

I'm thinking that she's perfected the art of elegantly slumping just enough to get into the same photo frame as he is.  ;) It's quite a talent! ;D :P

LOL Sioux. I just looked at it again. She does have a slight slouch. Hell Mick almost looks taller. :forfucksake

I know! Such a contrast to those weirdly angled pix we had on here a few years ago----with L'Wren out front and a TINY Mick following her. lol They almost look proportional in this pic. I wish I knew Mick's secret to keeping so skinny!

lol....I actually think Miss Scott compliments him perfectly. I always thought Jerry Hall was the ultimate accessory and am frankly enjoying the change of scenery.
The shoes are another matter. A nice pair of those classic Stacy Adams-type shoes would work, like he used to wear in the 60s and 70s.
But L'wren is fine by me.

Yeah, evidently they know each other. Saw a TV clip---Johnny was doing an interview for his animated movie, in a hotel lobby, and Bieber heard he was downstairs, so, he crashed the interview to say "hi". Guess the Bieb is surrounding himself with those who have been in the biz awhile, who will look out for his gentle youth at this critical time in his life.  ;)

Mick Jagger is the latest victim of the Twitter death hoax

Mick Jagger has been declared momentarily dead by the Twitter masses. "RIP Mick Jagger" became a worldwide trending topic on Wednesday, despite all signs pointing to a very much alive man. It seems the trend started after Jagger's appearance at the Grammys. Peter Rosenberg, a radio disc jokey, wrote:

wait i thought this was for actual dead people...not the living dead RIP Mick Jagger ...

As news is wont to do in the giant game of Telephone played on Twitter, the joke quickly became a possible news item. However, just yesterday Mick Jagger's new Web site launched and his Facebook and his Twitter feed sent out some Grammy clips.

Mick Jagger joins an illustrious group of celebrities killed by Twitter, including Justin Bieber, Aretha Franklin and Charlie Sheen.

What a performance, Mick has to be the fittest 67 year old around! Looks like he lost his eye lashes though, or at least didn't use as much make up as usual.

That Saadiq guy has to be the best dancing guitarist I've ever seen too!
