Eddie Van Halen says dad fueled his drinking

Eddie Van Halen puts some of the blame on his father for his long struggle with alcohol. In the May issue of Esquire, the Van Halen guitarist said “the whole alcoholism thing” developed when he asked his dad how to combat his nerves when playing music in front of people.

His father gave him a shot of vodka and a cigarette to ease his nerves, and that started Van Halen on a near lifetime of drinking.

The 57-year-old Van Halen also talked about the struggle to get clean, pulling his son Wolfgang out of school at 15 to join the band, and his relationship with ex-wife Valerie Bertinelli.

The issue hits newsstands on April 24. The recently reunited Van Halen is now on tour.

She's the Woman official video
http://youtu.be/Tj3ul98CnRg

A little low on cash
but I'm high on luck.

I wanna be your knight in shining pick-up truck

with a Chevy for my summer home.
Let's get the party started.

It's looking like the city towed
my other apartment.

She got a doorbell sign that said:
"bring it or don't ring it."

She's the woman (Go on:)
She's the woman
She's the woman
She's the woman

Fate is my pimp
but she was cool.

(I) said If you're doin' business with me, honey
what does that make you?

Some Casablanca gin joint?
You're a nervous wreck.

Your I.Q. plummets fourteen points.
Her thunder thong around your neck.

The song ain't dirty
it's really just the way we sing it. (Sing it:)

She's the woman (Sing it:)
She's the woman
She's the woman
She's the woman

[solo]

She wanted something to regret
tomorrow morning.

This suburban garage-a-trois
was worth exploring.

Yeah dreams come true
but it remains to be seen.

By the time mine usually do
it's no longer me!

She got a doorbell sign:
"you better bring it, or don't ring it."

She's the woman
She's the woman
She's the woman

Lame excuse is right, he would have been an alcoholic regardless, it's in the gene's Eddie, I know of people who were brought up with parents who didn't drink period who still became alcoholics.

See below #s, very reminiscent of the 2004 tour in the SE with attendance and reduced prices. I'm sure the bigger cities will be much higher when released. MSG should have 2 sellouts posted.

Aging rockers Van Halen can still bring it

David Lee Roth may not be able to jump like he used to, but he’s still got some moves.

These days the Van Halen frontman favours the shimmy, shake, slide and spin instead of the above-the-head kicks and air splits he was famous for in his younger days, although he still pulled off a few leaps and kicks during the band’s stop at the MTS Centre on Sunday night.

He is 57 after all, so that’s to be expected, as was his flashy outfit that looked like he picked it up at Liberace’s garage sale: a sparkly blue and red jacket, leather pants, a black vest and satin blue shirt. And he never failed to deliver a whole lot of head-scratching and/or hilarious quotes that seemed to come from a part of his brain far away from the 30-odd years of lyrics rattling around in there.

Some examples:

❚ "We're going to hell in a bowl full of cherries."

❚ While talking about a drum beat that sounded like an old beer commercial he suddenly ended the conversation with: "No metaphysics before happy hour. I'll probably lie to you again before the evening is over."

❚ "I made a sex tape in 1982 and I was a 1982 sexy mother (lover)."

❚ While talking to a fan in the crowd: "I might be your Goddamn father. You look familiar."

❚ During a cover of Roy Orbison's Oh, Pretty Woman he stopped the song and gave a fan grief for throwing something on stage. "Wait a minute, wait a minute. Don't throw your garbage up on stage; throw your girlfriend up, (bad word insult)."

Oh yeah, he's still full of spunk and both he and the veteran California band were in fine form for a crowd of about 8,000. Official attendance wasn't released for the show, but the arena was set up in its full configuration and there were plenty of unused seats. With a top ticket price of $165, Van Halen might have overestimated their value in today's market.

The money wasn't spent on production. The simple setup included only a large video screen behind the band showing black and white images of the action on stage, replays of that action (you could see Roth pretending his fingers were guns twice), still photos and the band's logo. There were some steps leading up to a drum riser and bass amps, but as far as arena rock spectacles go, this ranked low on the spectacle scale.

Not that it really mattered in the end, since it was hard-rock nostalgia we were there for and hard-rock nostalgia we got.

Reviews of the tour have been mixed, but Winnipeg appears to have caught the band on a good night with Roth and the Van Halens — guitarist Eddie, drummer Alex and bassist Wolfgang (who replaced original member Michael Anthony in 2006) — offering up 22 tracks and two solos in nearly two hours.

Eddie is known for his "brown sound," but everything about his style Sunday was colourful, from the recognizable riffs and the speedy solos to his whammy bar dive bombs and his legendary tapping. He smiled through much of the night and was in fine form while harmonizing with his son Wolfgang and Roth.

The band is touring on the new release, A Different Kind of Truth, and offered up four tracks from it, but otherwise the material focused on the albums recorded with Roth from 1978-84.

The band took the stage and launched into Unchained off Fair Warning before revisiting their 1978 self-titled debut with Runnin' With the Devil. Other early highlights included Everybody Wants Some!! and Somebody Get Me a Doctor.

Things started lagging in the energy department about 40 minutes in with the new China Town, Oh, Pretty Woman, a drum solo and the Kinks' You Really Got Me, but things picked up again with Dance the Night Away, I'll Wait and Hot for Teacher, which had Roth working up a huge sweat while dancing around the stage.

In one of the show's strangest bits, Roth stood alone on stage plucking an acoustic guitar while talking about his sheep-herding dogs while videos of them played behind him.

"I love dogs! Is anybody with me here?" he asked before introducing everyone to his pets — including one from Manitoba — and talking about his hobby and his vehicles.

"I own three pickup trucks. There are no other cars in the garage."

The story led into a full-throttle version of Ice Cream Man followed by the party anthem Panama before Eddie was left alone for his nearly 10-minute solo and the guitar god showed he is still a master by playing clean, distorted, making weird noises by messing with the volume knob, tapping and climaxing with Eruption, arguably one of the best known guitar solos in rock 'n' roll.

The strong finish concluded with Ain't Talking 'Bout Love and Jump. During the final song Roth didn't do any jumping, but spun a microphone stand around like a baton before confetti shot into the air.

In an odd bit of counter-programming, Kool & the Gang were hand-picked by Roth to open the show and treated a sparse crowd to a 50-minute set of funk, R&B, disco and pop.

The 10-piece group has been together in various incarnations since the mid 1960s and are still led by brothers Robert "Kool" Bell on bass and Ronald Bell on saxophone. It took about half the set for the crowd to get into it, but the people who were there were treated to a tight, energetic set by a hard-working band that played nothing but hits, including Hollywood Swinging, Jungle Boogie, Get Down On It, Ladies Night and the wedding/social staple Celebration, which had some people dancing in their seats and singing along.

Van Halen have postponed over 30 dates on their 2012 North American tour, beginning with their show scheduled for July 7 at Uncasville, Ct. and ending with their planned Sept. 25 performance in Milwaukee.

No reason or official statement has been given for these postponements, nor is there any word on when the rescheduled dates might be announced. The timing seems odd, as the band announced earlier this week they were extending the tour with eight new shows.

A press release from the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the band was scheduled to perform in September simply reads: “The Van Halen show at EnergySolutions Arena Tuesday, September 4th has been temporarily postponed. Future dates to be announced.”

The band will apparently still be performing throughout May and June, with their next show scheduled for Saturday, May 19 in St. Paul, Minn, followed by 13 more dates culminating on June 26 in New Orleans. A complete schedule of both postponed and still-scheduled Van Halen concerts follows below.

Van Halen Postpone Summer Tour Dates
All shows after June 26th pulled from band's website

Van Halen have abruptly postponed all tour dates after their June 26th show in New Orleans with no explanation.

The band yanked more than 30 long-planned dates, including shows in Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland, Salt Lake City and El Paso. Local promoters United Concerts and AEG issued statements regarding some postponed shows to local media, including the Salt Lake Tribune and Las Cruces Sun-News, but no details have been offered yet about rescheduled dates or refunds.

Nearly all of the tour is promoted by Live Nation, whose reps wouldn't comment. The band's rep also had no comment. A source with knowledge of the tour tells Rolling Stone that Van Halen's members "hate each other." Adds the source, "The band is arguing like mad. They are fighting."

News of the postponed tour dates surprised several arena reps, who are featuring upcoming Van Halen shows prominently on their websites. "You want to know the absolute fuckin' truth? I have no fuckin' idea," another concert-business source with knowledge of the tour tells Rolling Stone.

"It's selling pretty good – I don't know why they would say it's being canceled," says a source at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, where the band was supposed to perform on July 7th.

Several of the non-canceled dates have nearly sold out, including this Saturday's show in Minneapolis and June 20th in Dallas. "We're selling really well," says Jack Larson, vice president and general manager of the Xcel Energy Center. "We're looking forward to it."

After decades of touring with Sammy Hagar (and, for a brief period in the late 1990s, Gary Cherone), Van Halen reunited with David Lee Roth for a 2007 tour and hit the road again with him in February. The band released its first new album with Roth, "A Different Kind of Truth," earlier that month. It sold 187,000 copies in its debut week and hit Number Two.

Van Halen Getting Along Fine, Taking a Break, And Planning to Extend Tour!
MAY 18, 2012 / 49 COMMENTS

Just when we all were beginning to think we were going to get a killer Van Halen album and an entire tour without any drama whatsoever, look what happens!
Yesterday, Van Halen POSTPONED (not canceled!) most of their Summer tour dates with no reason given. Immediately, speculation ran wild. Fans wondered if there were health issues. Rolling Stone quotes a mysterious “source with knowledge of the tour” who supposedly said the band members “hate each other” and are “arguing like mad.”
The Van Halen News Desk now has some answers form our trusted and proven sources. Other than those Summer dates having to be moved, it’s actually good news.
First off, no one in the band is sick. No health problems.
Second, we knew right away that Rolling Stone’s “source” is completely wrong, and can not possibly be a person with actual inside knowledge of the tour, because all four band members have been getting along splendidly throughout the entire tour. Roth and the Van Halen’s talk every day, and they are all smiles on stage. Everyone who’s seen the tour or even youtube videos can confirm that.
In fact, the band is on such a high from playing together this year and they were really taken aback by the Rolling Stone quote. They’re older and wiser and haven’t had any issues with one another.
Why were these dates postponed? The band has been working tirelessly for the last 18 months – writing and recording “A Different Kind Of Truth”, filming the “Tattoo” video, rehearsing, putting together the show themselves (lighting, the videos, the stage, routing the tour, and lots of behind the scenes stuff that most people don’t even know about). The band wants the second leg to be as awesome as the first. And for that to happen they want to put more time into the planning of it. Not just continue on with the same show.
Van Halen is very enthusiastic about the rest of the tour and wants be on the road for a long time. Just how long remains to be seen, but we’ll say that the tour will probably continue into next year. They are now considering touring Australia and Japan in the near future.
As it stands now, the 31 postponed US shows are due to be rescheduled. There should be some sort of official announcement forthcoming.

David Lee Roth Explains Postponed Van Halen Tour Dates
'The band is winning, but our schedule has been sidelined for unnecessary roughness'

David Lee Roth posted a video this weekend explaining the mysteriously postponed dates on Van Halen's tour.

As Rolling Stone reported Thursday, the band abruptly postponed all the tour dates after their July 26th show in New Orleans, pulling more than 30 dates from their schedule last week, including shows in Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland, Salt Lake City and El Paso. They offered no explanation for the postponement at the time.

Though a source with knowledge of the tour attributed the cancelations to fighting within the band, Roth insists otherwise in the video. "The band is getting along famously," he says, "better than we have in quite some time."

The true cause for the disruption, he explains, is simply exhaustion.

"As usual, we bit off way more than we could chew when it came to scheduling. The band is winning, but our schedule has been sidelined for unnecessary roughness," he says. "We're gonna take a break and we're gonna come all the way back around, because this tour is gonna take about two years."
