Your Favourite Led Zeppelin

Transfering my favourite Zep tracks to my I-POD has given me the opportunity to revisit their albums for the first time in a good while.

I found that my original preferences are the same: I still beleive that Led Zeppelin 2 is their strongest effort.

I have decided to include only their original studio LP's.

What is everyone elses favourite?

Led Zep 2 is always great to listen to, though it's badly recorded (despite the channel switching trickery)

I've always had a soft spot for Presence.

Graffiti is a bit over blown, but side 1 is a bloody belter.

I must admit that I have never thought of the 2nd album being poorly recorded - sounds OK to me.

I have never really got into Presence - the same goes for Pysical Graffiti. The latter just doesn't work for me. I like Custard Pie, The Rover and Trampled Under Foot. Aside from those, nothing really grabs me. Kashmir has a killer riff, but plods along and is way too long.

I've always really liked In Through The Out Door - especially In The Evening and Hot Dog. I really enjoy Page's scorching and muffled Scotty More-style lead work.

the first cd is good and that double live album with the black cover that came out in the late '70's or early '80's is also good.  i think it is called, the song remains the same.  wpdh plays 3 songs from them every weeknight at 7pm.  for some reason they are hugely popular here in the hudson valley.  i come and go with them these days but they did write some great songs.

I liked every song on the 4th,  except I never cared for Four Sticks & Going to California, this album (or any Led Zep album for that matter) reminds me so much of smoking weed, the same with Pink Floyd's Dark side of the Moon.

Definitely III.  Nobody beats Page on acoustic . . . love the English folk pastoral Hangman's-Beautiful-Daughter thing going, with Hey Hey What Can I Do spliced in there somewhere.

Houses of the Holy a strong finisher too.

what?? no coda in the poll??

FG and Zack are right....nobody beats pagey on the alt tuning acoustics...."That's the Way" is the easiest song to play this side of louie louie, and it really gets the chicks.

III is an acoustic masterpiece. barring plant's whiney vocals (one of the reasons zeppelin never stuck with me like the stones and beatles), it is one of my top 20 albums of all time.

pretty lame album cover tho.

But that voice is an absolutely essential part of the Zeppelin whole, whiny bits and all.   To paraphrase Macca:  it's bloody Robert Plant.  He's a legend.

It's also interesting there's no clear favorite here.  They're all damn good. (Coda rules!)

I just said it.  Hey Hey What Can I Do.   The title's only said once in the song (at the end: "Hey hey what can I do/I got a woman who won't be true.")  Recorded during the III sessions and originally released only as the B-side to the Immigrant Song single.  Not sure if that was a US-or UK only release.  They didn't do any singles in one of the countries.  Forget which was which.

I know you've mentioned this before, HOS. That you don't like Going to California.....I usually, basically, have very much the same taste in tunes as you do, no matter what the group. But we are poles apart as far as this song goes! It's one of my fave Zep tunes......ahhhh, to each his own, though, eh? Smiley

IV is my favourite one - highlights for me are When The Levee Breaks and Battle of Evermore (with Sandy Denny making it her own)

The first disc of Physical Graffiti is the only one that comes close. I love 'Kashmir' and  'Trampled Underfoot'.

I always liked 'In Through The Out Door' - can't see why so many people wrote it off (maybe the over-reliance on keyboards?). Some great songs on there - All My Love is a gem, Carouselambra (although it goes on a bit) and especially In The Evening.

Always found 'Presence' pretty unlistenable . Liked the 'Song Remains The Same' live album too, although I always draw the line at ten minute drum solos as well as the 27 minutes of indulgent wankery that is 'Dazed and Confused'.
