The guy that play's for Hank III is pretty good. But I assume that a "pedal steel" is the same thing as a slide guitar.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_7c67E3qfo

(kinda sorry about posting this video again but many of these old videos should be viewed and studied as "crucial historical documents" rather than just mere songs....the Blind Owl was quiate a slide player.)

Absolutely not.  They both use a piece of metal on the finger, but the pedal steel is a sit-down instrument that affords the player much more tremolo, creating that sound so familiar to country music.  In the country-rock idiom "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow from the Flying Burrito Brothers was an accomplished pedal steel player, as was Jerry Garcia from the Dead (listen to Candyman) who was actually a member of the New Riders of the Purple Sage on pedal steel for a while.  There are countless in straight country of whom I'm not aware.

Nellie is correct that Elmore James is the king of the slide guitar.  (Trivia:  Elmore never cut a full LP.)Other accomplished rock and roll acolytes include Jeremy Spencer from Fleetwood Mac, Lowell George, Duane Allman, and our own Mick Taylor among many others.  You may laugh but I really like Robby Kreiger's bottleneck too.  Brian Jones was famous for doing it when no one else was, and like most of his instruments, was a competent but not outstanding player.  His slide solo on I Wanna Be Your Man was seminal in a pop-rock song, and he also nails I Just Can't Be Satisfied quite nicely.

I wouldn't laugh. I think the man is waaaay underrated as a guitarist. And I can forgive that as I underrated him myself for many years....until one day about 10 years ago I saw him on TV.....blew me right the fuck away.

That video is one of my favorites from Monterey Pop, another great player is Roy Cooder, but Elmore James is the King.

Elmore James IS king. I love what Brian did for slide in the early 60's. He said that "I Can't Be Satisfied" was his best piece.

Lowell George. Definitely. And Johnny Winter has his own "sound".

LOVE slide.....and blues harp. Yeah, I'm in heaven... Smiley

While I agree w/ Elmore................

Derek Trucks has taken it to a Ho-Nuva-Level.....the guy is from another planet.

There's..... Skydog, Warren, Ry, Doyle (texas style), Luther Dickenson.

These guys were pretty good too...... :hilarious :smile Ouch!

Now, if your talking'bout the Sacred Steel.....(Lap/Peddle) then there is only 1 modern day player....Robert Randolph........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nw9xvy1DWsk

All slide players are trying to immulate the Lap/Peddle....on a "bodied" guitar....additionally, the Lap players were trying to immulate the voices of the gospel choir.

Check out the record "The Word".........members of the North Missisippi Allstars and Robert Randolph covering the lap duties.......great record, all instrumental I believe.

Yep, I agree that Robert Randolf is king of the pedal steel now. He's amazing. I still prefer the sound of slide, though {personally}. But yeah----Randolph will make you a believer for sure!

Even though he's a right prick, I'm surprised no one has mentioned this idiot:  Ouch!

For all the tarty things people say about his playing, his slide playing is masterful when he's not hammered and actually concentrates.

Here's a nice example of Pedal Steel + slide guitar + a great guitar picker together.

Mark Knopfler, Sonny Landreth and ....who is the pedal steel player?
