....apart from the Stones.

For me I guess it would be The Ike & Tina Turner Revue in 71 or 72.

White Stripes, Vincent's Ear, 2000.  Their first tour on their own outside of Detroit.  150 people packed the place to the rafters and went apeshit.  That shit was off the chain, over the fence and running wild on the interstate.

Booked it.

Hmnn. Interesting. Jack White comes highly recommended by people whose tastes I trust, but I've still to actually listen to one of his records.

Again I can believe that. Like the White Stripes, Pearl Jam is a band that I've missed, up to this point. But I can believe that they are as good as you say they are. Just from watching this one video. I get that impression.

Oh, can't really choose. Marianne Faithfull I suppose, the emotional impact her gigs have on me is beyond description.
And then Robert Plant, Iggy Pop, Uriah Heep, Placebo.

Jimmy Page balances out Crowes' flakiness.   Jimmy Page is GUITAR GOD.

The Who, September 22, 1982.  Capital Centre, Largo Maryland.  First show of the tour, about two weeks into my freshman year at college.  I had camped outside the arena for two days for the tickets before classes started.

Grateful Dead when they played Dark Star, RFK Stadium 7-12-90.

Ray Davies Storyteller tour November 1996.

tough, tough question...

ok, after much thought and consideration, i'll go for:-

The White Stripes,
May 2nd 2002,
The Shepherds Bush Empire, London, UK.

They had recently released 'White Blood Cells', were unknown to the majority, and playing a relatively small venue,
to a crowd who had mostly never seen them, live, before.
The noise , the incendary like power of their performance, that night, was something special, and has stayed with me since.

Over the last 6 years, i've since seen them a further 10-12 times... they're always a force to be reckoned with, but that night was something else, a live music moment, that will always stay with me.
For my money there's no one of the 'young breed' who does primal blues, like Jack White, i'll always fight his corner.

My favorite would be Joe Zawinul & Syndicate in Paris in 2005 or so. As far as I've understood, he hires new musicians all the time for his Syndicate. He seemed totally (and understandably) in love with the people who played with him that night : the bassist was Linley Marthe, the singer Sabine Kabongo -- I don't remember the other names. I often find it hard to find good "world music", but this was fantastic.

Cant count Bruce as he's the best live act I've ever seen, followed by the Stones. My favourite show ever was the first time I saw him, at Wembley Arena in 1981.

So - aside from Bruce & the Stones, here's ten very special ones:

Dylan - seen him 32 times. Best of the lot was Barrowland Ballroom, Glasgow in June 2004, followed by the two in Portsmouth in September 2000. Glasgow 1995 & 1998 were up there too.

Neil Young - Manchester March 2008. Especially the first night as I was in the 4th row! His version of 'Down by the River' on the first night may well have been the greatest live song I've ever seen.

The Who - Birmingham June 2004. Chairman Pete on top form and Daltrey's voice in much better shape than has tended to be the case in this decade.

Warren Zevon - Ulster Hall, Belfast Feb 1988. I fell in love with his female keyboard player.

U2 - Zooropa, Dublin August 1993. The first half hour was an all out assault on the senses the like of which I've never seen before or since. VISUALLY the most impressive stage show I've seen.

Prince - the after-hours show at the Indigo2 in August 2007, hot on the heels of the main show at the 02 next door. Two hours of sheer spontaneity and musical genius.

Sting - I'm not a big fan, but his Blue Turtles tour in Belfast in 1986 was surprisingly wonderful. Darryl Jones played bass.

Steve Earle & The Dukes - Belfast November 2004. A concert so good that as soon as I got home afterwards, I went online and booked tickets, flight and a hotel to see him in Glasgow a week later. The show there was even better.

Lucinda Williams - Manchester Nov 2006 and Dublin 2007. Manchester probably has the edge because she played 'Jailhouse Tears' as an audible after I shouted for it, and I got a hug, a kiss and a "knowing look" from her after the show.

Liam Clancy - in a club in Belfast in May 2008. A surprise choice, as with the guy being 72, in semi retirement and having had health problems down the years, I didnt expect much. I went more as a chance to see a folk legend more than anything else. As it turned out, he was absolutely fantastic - sang like a bird and his stories between songs were hilarious.  Got to meet him afterwards, which was a nice bonus as he was a real gent.

A friend of mine just wrote me a note about this show and said it was the greatest thing he had ever seen as well!

Then She FREAKIN Kissed Me!

Mountain of FREAKIN LOVE!

Little FREAKIN Queenie!

Their will not be much else like it in this lifetime. Plus it was coming on the heels of an absolutley excellent Nashville show. Ahh,thank goodness for boots to get my Bruce fix.

Hmnn. Interesting. Jack White comes highly recommended by people whose tastes I trust, but I've still to actually listen to one of his records.

MaineMotels, *When you get some time and decide you may want to check out some new music for yourself do yourself a favor and give them some listens. I'd start with Elephant. You will be impressed.

I am completely impressed by The White Stripes and consider myself a real fan. I cannot commend them (especially Jack) enough. White is talented, raw, and authentic both in sound and in his writing skills.

A friend of mine was talking up their 2003 CD Elephant. Finally, one day I gave it a listen and was surprised at how much I liked it. Right away I knew they were my next big thing. I have never looked back.

Elephant is the best album I have heard in a decade! It is a classic and is in my personal favorite top ten albums of all time.

"I Want to Be the Boy to Warm Your Mother's Heart" and "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" are fabulous.

Their releases after Elephant were very good as well.  In my ears they are the best thing going.

So it's not the Stones and only one show... today my answer is:

King Crimson first of three shows in Mexico City 1996... pH = 0  It was explosive (started with Thela Hun Ginjeet), mystic, acid, futurist, classic, sike-ay-delic, progressive, fantastic show

Guys age has its advantages I suppose. When I was in teens I lived almost equal distance from Toronto/Buffalo/Detroit and I lived in Kitchener/Waterloo Ontario that had 2 universities. Hell we had Spirit and Cactus to open our school year in 73!.Any band that toured came through that way and I saw as many as I could.Shit I forgot Janis on the Peace Train! Saw Zep too (but this thread is about good shows...lol).Johhny Winter used to sell out old Maple Leaf Gardens and blow the crowd away. That reminds me of a tremendous Gardens show with Sly Stone and his Family at their peak..what a blast!

Patti Smith - Bottom Line - November 28, 1976
Patti Smith - The Palladium, NYC - December 31, 1976
Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers - Max's Kansas City - July 11, 1978
Bruce Springsteen - Capitol Theatre - September 19, 1978
New Barbarians - MSG - May 7, 1979
Prince - Nassau Coliseum - March 23, 1985
Iggy Pop - Academy Theatre - November 9, 1990
Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers - The Marquee, NYC - November 30, 1990

Word up to that.  That show was absolutely ridiculously over the top great.  Best arena rock show I've ever seen hands down.  Never experienced a mind/body/band meld with so many people at once as that Brown Sugar at the end of that show.  Balls out.

1-Alice Cooper (original band) at Winter Pop New Years Eve '71, I was right next to the stage, what a concert!! it was the first time he hung himself in the gallows, & this happened as the clock hit Midnight, he was hanging in the gallows with this incredible thunder & lighting going on, then he came back with top hat & white tails singing "We Still Got A Long Way to go"
2-The Stones on their '72 tour first show at Maple Leaf Gardens, I heard the 2nd show was even better (someone said they got more stoned & put on a better show)
3-Led Zep. on the tour when their 4th album was released.
4-Bowie at Maple leaf gardens in '76 & 78, fantastic shows, especially in '76, on the Station to Station tour, it was a stage that nobody ever seen before, total stark, with white lights, it was like something out of pre-Nazi-Germany, when Cabaret was going on.
5-Bowie at O'Keefe Center on his Diamond Dogs tour, unreal, he went over the heads of the first few rows on a Cheery picker singing "Space Oddity" he was sitting on a giant hand, that opened up while singing "Time" that was Cocaine Bowie at his best.
6-The Clash at The Rex Theatre in '79, it was a movie theatre that only holds so many people, I was right next to the stage, on Mick Jones side, Joe Strummer was sweating like crazy, but he was putting all he had into it.
There's  been some others but nothing like these concerts.

Great stub action Stone.  I caught that Station tour of Bowie's, on St. Patty's Day in Bahston.
Was a good show.  Always wanted to catch that version of '71 Coop, a crack outfit they were..

Yes the 2nd 72 Stones show in Toronto was the best of the 2 but both were still chilling in their profound greatness.I had bragged for years about how good the Stones were and went with 5 friends. They were hoping to shut me up..After the 2 shows they could hardly speak they were so in awe as to how much better they were than everyone else we'd heard to that point.Believe me we saw em all in those days too.

I never seen this but I agree it was the best show, it was a total insane show as far as tickets go, I waited in line for 16 hours, if you think this was crazy some people waited in line for 2 wks., I finally got to the box office after 20 hours, I got 4 tickets to the grey seats, bought them & then & sold them to a ground floor seat that I bought of a scalper for 35$ & then the concert happened it was totally insanity, all i seen was a total rip-off, in the 80's they had video screens, but not in '72, it was a total rip-off, I never even seen The Fucking stones, all I seen was people rushing the stage, & people being so fucking insane that they couldn't enjoy a concert, all they did was fucking scream & rush the stage, so say did I enjoy The Rolling Stones in '72?, I don't fucking think so.

Bowie, Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, February 1976.  Superb light show using only white light and darkness, plus a great, tight performance.  Never saw anything like it again, even at Pittsburgh 2004, which was in the same ballpark.  1976 opening act: "Un chien Andalou," by Dali and Bunuel.

Rolling Stones, Rich Stadium, Orchard Park (Buffalo), NY, August 8, 1975.  A long show on the last night of the tour.  Jagger danced and danced (never saw that again, either), and the band didn't want to let the tour go yet, having lately ditched the South America leg.  The night is commemorated in an article about Annie Leibovitz in the October 2008 Vanity Fair.

Paul McCartney, Nassau Coliseum, Long Island, "Wings at the Speed of Sound" tour.  Too lazy to look it up, but there wasn't a dry eye when he played Yesterday for the first time since.  The rest was of equal quality.

Besides the Stones or Springsteen...

We'll shine like stars in the summer night
We'll shine like stars in the winter light
One heart, One hope, One love
With or without you.

U2 1987 tour.  A band in its prime doing a stadium tour.  No big production.  No big light show.  No fireworks.  Just rock and roll in a huge venue.  Incredible.  It still brings chills to me.  I did not have to see anything.  My ears saw it all.  All the way through from Where the Streets Have no Name (Greatest opener ever) to 40 (greatest closer ever).

Close second would be Tom Waits this year.  I loved that show and still listen to it (thanks GTRM you are the best)!!!!

[quote author=andrews27 link=1221577891/50#67 date=1221871893]Bowie, Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, February 1976.  Superb light show using only white light and darkness, plus a great, tight performance.  Never saw anything like it again, even at Pittsburgh 2004, which was in the same ballpark.  1976 opening act: "Un chien Andalou," by Dali and Bunuel.
I remember that opening screen by Dali, A slash across the eye that was so disturburing, like some one had slashd a eye ball with a razor blade, it was disturbiring, & it still haunts me to this very day, it was cruel!!! but Bowie! was so into this cinemant art, that he was creativate, & there's nobody that could tell him different, that was the old days, now bowie is a straight person, he's no longer interested in being a artistic person, now! his only life is being a family man, which I can understand!!! let's give life to David Bowie R.I.PDavid bowie.

Man you should have followed me to the stage!..............

The only person that I never saw was Springteen! I heard his concerts was like a spiritual awakening, one of the best performers around, too bad I missed out on that, but I did see most of the 70's great acts, I seen The Jefferson Airplane in the late 60's, my ears were ringing for 3 weeks, I thought i had permanent ear damage for life!.

Well since other people have mentioned Stones shows. Even though the original post said other than Stones shows, let me say. The BEST show I ever saw was the Stones Oakland opening night No Security Tour 1999. First and only time I have ever been in the front row for a show. Afuckingmazing....Other top non-Stones shows I have seen. David Bowie at the Berkeley Community Theatre about 4 years ago. I think it was his last American tour. Killer show. Also John Fogerty playing some small obscure theatre in San Francisco about 3 years ago and pulling ou some real Creedence nuggets.....And going way back,I did catch Led Zeppelin's last american show in Oakland at the tender age of 15 and also the Who/Dead show and I also saw The Clash open for The Who...All in all a halfway decent Rock & Roll resume.

Best non-Stones show?  For me, it would be my first Grateful Dead show (my second rock concert ever):  August 27, 1972 in Veneta, Oregon.  New Riders of the Purple Sage opened; this was NRPS's peak, and Jerry sat in with them.  The Dead played 3 sets!  Here's a link to the setlist:

Word up to that.  That show was absolutely ridiculously over the top great.  Best arena rock show I've ever seen hands down.  Never experienced a mind/body/band meld with so many people at once as that Brown Sugar at the end of that show.  Balls out.

It was a full moon that night, its the only way I can explain it  It was a total MELTDOWN.
where were you sitting?
I was on the catwalk Left side,  Love in vain and hand slaps and just a great vibe and great sound in that place. now called the Mellon Arena.

Back wall, about 20 rows up, center - perfect sight and sound lines for stage and b-stage and audience involvement.   There was certainly voodoo in the air.  I was on an aisle and remember doing a very lascivious dance with some girl about half my age to CYHMK on the steps.  In retrospect a better show than the Tower.

party naked!!! at one time i had part of it on video which was probably about 10th generation or something. the audio copy i have i'm not exactly thrilled with compared to the other releases of this time. certainly its one of the greatest shows which many regard to be their best year. the  9/17 baltimore civic and 9/21 spectrum shows are getting heavy play on my disc changer now. i hope that someday soon we will see the full remastered release. there must be a good copy out there somewhere. i'm looking forward to next weeks egypt offerings. i'll take what i can get!!!

David Bowie - cleveland, public hall 74 - first show ever for me

Mohogany Rush, Blue oyster cult, Aerosmith, Uriah heep, faces - 75 cleveland stadium (front row)

Pink floyd - pittsburgh 75 & montreal 77

Springsteen - Allen theatre, cleveland - 75 & 76

New barbarians - oshawa - 79 my best show ever, special guest appearance by the stones (front row)

the who - cleveland 75 w/ keith moon (i think) and buffalo (war memorial auditorium)(night after the cincinnati show where 11 people died, musically not too good, but very emotional show), also buffalo in 79 (rich stadium)(i think) about 15 seconds after they started playing "love reign o'er me" it started raining, and stopped aing about 15 seconds before the end of the song. Pete came up to the mike and said "let me see the rolling stones pull that one"

Live Aid - philadelphia

so many others that i can't begin to remember, 2500 shows between 75 and 84

I was not at the Oakland show, but at the Pittsburgh show for that tour.  There has been some debate about which show was better (pitt or Oak).  It does not matter.  We both saw an incredible show.

If I can find it later, it right now everything is boxed up to be moved on Monday, If I find it, I 'll see if I can arrange to make a copy. let me know if you already have.   I would have to have it copied, I cannot copy video b/c I am lame
