Pearl Jam 05.  I maybe the only one on this board to see that, since PJ only opened for one show on that tour.

I'm reminded how much I forget. I've saw Metallica at one of the two SF shows... I've seen Metallica a few times. I saw Metallica open for some in Philly in the 80's, and i can't for the life of me remember who the hell they opened for...

Yup..easily the best ever.Wonderlove was his band then and really rocked the house.Story/Rumor has it that Stones waited almost 2 hours in Detroit before coming on to cool the crowd after Stevie kicked ass.The Meters in 75 were great too as was Chaka Khan. Worst?.....cant tell as I have been outside drinking during the openers since 75!

The Hartford opener was the Goo Goo Dolls (the song you're referring to is called 'Iris').

All 3 admins from this board were at both shows. However, we  missed the Goo Goo Dolls due to being otherwise occupied in the nearby Hartford Brewery, as evidenced here : - http://www.rocksoff.org/salt2.htm

Best opening bill - George Thorogood & The Destroyers followed by the J Geils Band at Slane in 1982. (the Chieftains actually opened the show, but I'll draw a Long Black Veil over that one)

Saw Stevie open a half dozen times that tour. He was never any hotter musically.
At the final birthday show at the Garden, the cutting of Mick's birthday cake evolved into a "cake" fight - chunks hurled everywhere and at everyone on the stage. Poor Stevie didn't know enough to duck and was consequently bombarded. Didn't stop him though from leading the "Uptight/Satisfaction" encore one last time with icing running down the side of his head.

My favorite openers were Thoroughgood, Pretenders and Counting Crows.
The TerryReid/BBKing/Tina Turner deal was interesting for one show, but after that was a long time to wait through for the headliners.
Worst was Kanye West and Living Colour.
Wished I had seen Chuck Berry who I believed opened a few shows in the 70's maybe.

Yes, I seen Stevie open for The Stones at Maple Leaf Gardens July '72, at the first show, (there were 2) on the same day, it was so damn hot, it was unreal, I still got the ticket stub, which I posted here before.
On the '69 tour, Ike & Tina Turner opened (also at Royal Albert Hall in '66) also B.B. King,  Terry Reid, & Chuck Berry, I would have loved to have  seen that.

I enjoyed her - all 5 UK shows in 1999 plus two in LA in 2002.

She basically ticked all the boxes for an warm-up act.

In the last few years, I've generally missed the openers due to 'summiting' commitments. Of the 13 shows last tour, the only acts I saw were Kasabian in Nice (apart from 5 minutes of Jet in Lisbon and Madrid) and most of the bill at Slane (I'd no choice in that one as we we re taken by coach).

Most disappointing - in relation to the way they were hyped up - were the Black Crows at Wembley Stadium in 1995.

Although, it goes without saying that in terms of vomit-inducing trauma, nothing comes close to the psychological turmoil of witnessing Bon Jovi in Paris in 1995. To this day, I still occasionally wake up in a cold sweat, crying and shaking, just thinking about it.

"The horror, the horror...."
