Saw Neil a week ago in Calgary. Man, finally seeing him in person was such a great experience. He really rocked out and goes as insane as ever with the feedback, noise and soloing. I love his intensity. Not a virtuoso on guitar but he just grinds those strings with such bends and picking that it's like he's trying to destroy it! Hendrix may be the only guitar player more physical than Neil. I've always known this but it's more profound live and in person.
It was not a really laid back show or anything, save for a few parts. I thought it was better that way. Ok, it's all off of memory so this might not be 100% accurate but here's how it went down (btw Death Cab for Cutie opened- not my cup of tea but they seemed respectable enough although I only heard them and didn't see them from where I was during their set- at a TV with my dad watching game 7 of the Sox-Rays series):
1. Love and Only Love- Well over 10 minutes of course 2. Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) 3. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere 4. Powderfinger 5. Spirit Road 6. Cinnamon Girl 7. Oh Lonesome Me 8. Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)- Done solo on a harmonium or pump organ if you will. 9. The Needle and the Damage Done- Second of two songs he did alone 10. Unknown Legend 11. Heart of Gold 12. Old Man 13. Get Back to the Country* 14. Just Singing a Song* 15. Sea Change* 16. When Worlds Collide* 17. Cowgirl in the Sand- Must have been an 11-13 minute version 18. Rockin' in the Free World- This version was about 7-8 minutes and it's just a show-stopper, plain and simple
*Newer ones probably targeted to be on his next LP is my guess. They all sound like improvements on Chrome Dreams II stuff actually. I wasn't knocked out, but the songs didn't bore me like some of the stuff from Prairie Wind did. ENCORE 19. A Day in the Life- Yes, the Beatles tune and it's a kick ass tour de force of freak-out guitar, feedback and distortion like almost every cadenza of a Neil electric song was in this concert only this time it was cooler, plus he ripped all the strings out of 'Old Black.' The best part is after the final chord of that song when Neil does his riffing then rips the strings out then walks over to the vibraphone his wife Pegi was playing, grabs the mallets and plays this staccato version of the chord on it to end the show officially. Hilarious touch)
His band was stellar. There's longtime standby Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar, rhythm guitar, organ), Pegi of course (backing vocals, piano, various percussion, vibraphone), Anthony Crawford (backing vocals, guitar, piano, various percussion), Chad Cromwell (amazing on drums), Rick Rosas (bass) and Larry Cragg his guitar technician played banjo on "Old Man."Well, whatever he does for his show in December in Toronto, you can compare it to what he was doing this time around.
