I missed the 1989 SF quake by 24 hours. I felt alot of small ones my 20 years in SF, something freaky about the earth moving like that. Total feeling of powerlessness, no control, no security. Yeah,no doubt about it. First of all,you get absolutley no warning. Then you don't know how strong it will be,or when it will stop. Just that the ground under you keeps shaking. Like you said,you feel powerless and yeah they can scare the shit out of you. I'm glad that no one in LA appears to have been hurt and damage isn't serious. Thanks, I feel better knowing my response was normal enough -- I wasn't really freaked out during, it happened too damn fast and all was just adrenaline and acting instinctively. It was more the aftermath, when there was actually time to take in exactly what you guys are talking about: the lack of warning, the feelings of powerlessness and uncertainty.
