Susan Boyle’s cover of the Rolling Stones classic Wild Horses was for many viewers the highlight of last night’s X Factor show.
Here we look at ten other acts who have dipped into the Jagger/Richards back catalogue for inspiration.
1. As Tears Go By – Marianne FaithfullThe Rolling Stones’s early career was built on the foundation of blues and R&B covers.
But with the continued rise of The Beatles, the band’s manager Andrew Loog Oldham knew Jagger and Richards had to get their own song writing skills up to speed and so began to pressurise the pair into writing their own material.
One such assignment set by Oldham was to pen a track that evoked ‘high cathedral windows and no sex’ for another of his acts, teenage songstress Marianne Faithfull.
The end result was ‘As Tears Go By’, which went on to be Faithfull’s first and biggest hit.
2. Otis Redding - SatisfactionHaving paid homage to R&B legends like Chuck Berry and Solomon Burke while a fledgling act, it came as something of an honour for the Stones when Southern soul star Otis Redding recorded his own take on one of their hits.
3. Devo - SatisfactionA somewhat less faithful version of the same song is this warped 1978 re-working version by American new-wavers Devo.
4. The Sundays - Wild HorsesSusan Boyle’s take on Wild Horses in many ways owes more to this arrangement by early-90’s indie favourites The Sundays than the original.
5. Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra – The Last TimeFamously plundered by The Verve for Bitter Sweet Symphony, the Wigan space rockers were deemed to have sampled too much of this string- laden instrumental version, resulting in all song writing credits being somewhat unfairly handed to Jagger and Richards.
6. Oasis – Street Fighting ManWhile the Gallagher brothers have always acknowledged the influence of The Beatles, in 1998 they doffed a cap to the Stones with this cover that featured on the B-side to All Around the World.
7. Guns N’ Roses - Sympathy for the DevilThis rocked-up version of the Stones classic appeared on the soundtrack for vampire flick Interview with the Vampire, but is probably most notable for being the final GNR track to feature guitar hero Slash.
8. U2 – Paint It BlackThis delay-heavy version by Ireland’s finest was hidden away on the b-side to band’s 1992 hit Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses.
9. Ike and Tina Turner – Honky Tonk WomanHere’s another pair of soul legend paying their dues to the Jagger/Richards catalogue. Ike and Tina had taken the Stones under their wing after the band supported them on an early sixties tour, with Tina tutoring Mick on the art of stage presence.
10. Phish - Exile on Main StreetPsychedelic rockers Phish took their Stones appreciation one-step further earlier this year by covering an entire album by the band at a festival in California.
