Introduction
Once you get the hang of working with mp3's, there is a point where you want to burn a copy of an mp3-album to a normal music cd.
All will be ok, as long as the album is no live or mixed recording.
In the latter case, no matter how hard you try, you will not succeed in making a seamless copy of the album on audio-cd.
for example you could:
set intertrack spacing = 0 seconds in your cdrw program and
concatenate all the separate mp3's to 1 big one,
removing all headers, tags and possible padding silences
manually restore indexes on the cdr to indicate where tracks must start
and burn the disc
If you rip and encode in the conventional way there will always be clicks and pauses between separate tracks on your burned cd.
Without going into too much technical detail, this is a shortcoming that is inherent to the mp3 format. Because mp3 frames overlap 50% even the best case scenario would get you an
ill-decoded first and last frame on all tracks when you split a continous mpeg stream (sounds like FFWD-ing with winamp/sonique) or
correct start and end of each track, be it with leading and trailing silence, adding a click to the continuous play
when you rip each track seperatly.
Also, reproducing a complete album in a correct way requires you to store index data of the disc (where does track start and end, and how long is the possible pause). This is impossible if you rip the conventional way: one wav and later mp3 for each track.
In short: You need to rip, store and distribute an album as mp3 and you expect it to come out the way you put it in: intact. All spaces and seamless connections between different tracks need to be kept as they were on the original source material.
How? Explained in 7 lines:
A. ripping and encoding
rip the cd to one big wave file + cue file
encode this wave file to mp3
store the one mp3 and the cue file
B. listening as MP3
play the one mp3 file and enjoy the uninterrupted play, use mp3cue to playback in winamp. (mp3cue is a plugin for winamp 2)
optionally: split the mp3 file using musiCutter, and rejoin later with mp3cat if you want to.
C. make a replica of the original live or mixed cd
decode the mp3 to a wave file
use the wav + cue to burn to a cdr
When not to use?
On conventional albums with separated, non-intertwined tracks, there's not much use to rip in this manner. It will only needlessly complicate things, and you will not have one nice mp3 file for each track. Best way here is to stick to ripping each track seperately and encoding each to it's mp3.
If you're a really lazy person, don't have too much time or just want to be safe, you might want to consider to rip all your albums this way. ( * )
Big advantage here is you wouldn't have to bother if an album is a regular, live or mix cd, and you can always normalize to 98%. The result is always an exact replica and the person that ends up with your mp3 will never be let down because afterward, one can always split the big mp3 up in separate tracks if it turns out to be a regular cd!
Be sure to double-check each album you rip for "intro-parts" or other seamless connections because once you rip in a conventional manner, there is no way to restore seamless playback and you'll get a click when listening to both your mp3 and album-copy.
