Hackney Diamonds theme/lyrics

Sept 3 2023

Jimmy Fallon: Is anger a theme of "Why So Serious?",
your new album?

Mick (sardonically): Yeah, Keith and I thought the theme of the
album should be anger. Every track. Anger and disgust...

*audience laughs*

In that spirit, here's my track-by-track analysis...

01 Why you angry with me?
02 Why you so afraid of emotional intimacy?
03 Why you so undependable?
04 Why you bite my head off?
05 Why you so depressed?
06 Why you so stressed out?
07 Why can't you handle the truth?
08 Why you so hostile?
09 Why you so bossy?
10 Why can't you be straight with me?
11 Why you so pessimistic? We're not.
12 Why you so set in your ways? We're not. And we're fucking 80.

speaking of lyrics interpretations.. does anyone else have the feeling that Driving Me Too Hard, which Mick and Keith wrote together, but sounds like Keith probably had a bit more influence on than Mick, seems to be a song that might be about the times in their relationship that weren't so great?...there are some lines in there that heavily make me think of things both Mick and Keith have said about each other in interviews over the years, or even just more recently, like Keith on the Howard Stern show...

Yes and no. Yes, each has indeed accused the other over the years of being
some variation of "too bossy". But no, not currently. Despite a stray almost
nostalgic dig here or there, like on Stern, both have gone out of their way
to claim extreme non-bossiness this time around. And its true. Mick let
Keith have his way with the sound, and Keith let Mick have his way with
the concepts (with Andrew the agreed-upon referee)

So Driving Me is not about their relationship as it currently stands, but
rather it and all the other songs are about their bitchy fans, the bitchy
world, the bitchy negativity we're all drowning in...

But what's remarkable is, under the influence of Mick and Keith's new vibe,
is just how much LESS bitchy their fans have suddenly become. Yes, there's
still a good deal of carping and nit-picking, but not nearly as much as had
become normalized. Its a nice change.

Yes, that's what I meant, that the song is about times when they weren't on their best terms, like 80s/90s... and obviously not about the current state of their relationship, since undoubtedly, it's better now than in decades, maybe ever, everyone says so, not only Mick and Keith themselves, but Ronnie as well...I mean Keith basically goes out of his way to specifically mention in like every interview that he loves Mick and Mick never fails to point out how well Keith and him worked together on the album and how much Keith helped him and how much fun they had

I also agree about the fans, at least about the usual ones who always paint everything black (pun intended xD), suddenly almost everyone seems really tame and just thrilled about the album which is great

The only people I've heard complain is some few Charlie stans who don't even seem to have any clue about the band history but just care about Charlie and nothing else and who are as selfish as to say the Stones should have stopped after Charlie died...I mean, honestly??? These old men had a blast during the 2021 and 2022 tour and they had a blast recording the new songs, just doing what they love most, making music together, and those people would honestly deny them that?

So, not technically a lyric....but I love how Jagger cries out during Bite My Head Off, " Come on Paul...Let's hear  some bass!! "

The entire album is filled with Jagger's cat calls , WHOOO's, YEAH!s and snarls...Im glad they were left in there.

In a faux-Liverpool accent, too....

Yes, theres some classic snarling there.  The one at the end of the solo on 'Bite' at 2:56.

Who the fuck is Johnny Rotten?

Does the theme in Driving Me Too Hard also kinda remind anyone else of All About You? It's more mature, though, less angry, but it has a similar energy, except that it's phrased in a less mean but a more heartfelt and sad way

Just noticed something  Grin Grin

Mick in the 70s on Jiving Sister Fanny: Well, she hocked my fancy motor and she hocked my electric guitar

Mick in 2023 on Mess It Up: You stole my numbers, you stole my code, you took my keys and then you nicked my phone

Maybe it's just a songwriting thing cause he thought it sounds the best that way, he also said that in WWW he wrote "filthy flat in Fulham" altho never having lived in Fulham cause Chelsea wouldn't have been an alliteration with "filthy flat"

What do y'all think Tell Me Straigh is about? Have seen some different takes so far...Keith himself joked on Howard Stern it's about fake news, but I don't believe it for a second lol

Heavy focus on the faux. Hard to hear any scouse there, it seems it's the generic southerner with a northern accent that doesn't change no matter what the city or the area. It always ends up being somewhere closer to east of the Pennines.

Also, don't think he says: let's hear some bass. I thought it was: let's hear somethin'.

It's an old blues/R & B trope.  You know - stolen from poor people who get upset when they lose their stuff.

I took her out dancing but she drank away my cash
She said, "I'm going to fix my face, don't you worry I'll be back"
I'm looking for her high and low like a mustard for a ham
She was crashed out in the bathroom
In the arms of my best friend

Melody, it was her second name
Melody, it was her second name

Then one day she left me
She took everything that moved
My car, she took my trailer home
She took my Sunday boots
My nose is on her trail
I'm going to catch her by surprise
Then I'm going to have the pleasure
To roast that child alive

And,

You can burn my house, steal my car
Drink my liquor from an old fruit-jar
Do anything that you want to do
But uh-uh baby, lay off of my shoes

Don't you step on my blue suede shoes
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes
