Seems that the rumours are true. No idea of the track listings/formats or release date as yet but we can expect an official announcement around March 11

(Thanks to Nico Zentgraf for the heads up)

Damn right!

And we dont even know the confirmed setlists for these shows.

...

All the available songs that are on LYL and bootlegs probably come from March 5th. I think it was the engineer Keith Harwood who said that the tapes from the 4th March show were damaged, so maybe the release will either all be from night 2 or else might also include a few salvageable songs from night 1

The intros on LYL are definitely from March 5th, as Mick says 'there's the bottom pinchers from LAST night'

Photos are enough sure.. Have gotten plenty audio although all of the set has been elusive... What I've been waiting for is Footage. Where's footage of any type? We've gotten audio and the rest would be appreciated but why does no one seem to care about footage

Theres no video. Thats a club that holds about 300 people, Ive never seen any photos that would indicate there were film cameras and there was no reason to film the shows - they werent televised and home video didnt exist in 1977.

The Stones are pretty much on the same level as the audience. Video footage of the shows would be almost unwatchable.

There WAS film of the 1968 NME Concert, because a clip of it was shown on 'Time for Blackburn' on Southern TV (ITV) soon afterwards.  Of course, it may have been wiped and it probably wasnt the complete 2-song set. Back in the days when I collected bootleg tapes, I had an audio recording of the TV clip. Presumably whoever recorded it just put a cassette recorder in front of their TV. The Stones specifically requested that their performances at both the 1966 and 1968 NME Pollwinners shows were not broadcast.

I dont believe there was ever footage of El Mocambo for the reasons stated earlier. No cameras in any of the photos of the show, bad sightlines and in 1977 there was no reason to film concerts unless there was an intent to broadcast them. I think we'd have heard of footage by now if there was.

Just because there aren't available photos showing professional video cameras, or the fact that it was 1977 means nothing as to whether there is footage or not, the stones have recorded every single show from the love you live album and every other show that wasn't on the album of those years and stashed them in the treasure trove of a warehouse which only Mr. Micheal has the keys to, ofcourse this warehouse includes bootlegs etc. We couldn't positively say there isn't footage of any given concert until the day comes (if ever - even after) he'd decide to throw us a scrap, the current scrap we seem to be receiving is the audio (at last!) . Home video as you may know it may not have "existed" , but home video did infact exist long before 1977. As this metephorical El Macambo would have been recorded on physical film such as anything else before it, I just wanted to say that film has existed for ages as well as home projectors since 1895. The first handheld (super 8 specifically) camera was available to everyone by 1965 and film as well as home projectors (used for home videos) by that time were abundant. That's where we get a large part of our bootlegs from is people bringing in super 8's, and at a small venue such as El Macambo if one had been used the film would be great, certainly not unwatchable, and could have had audio. If done correctly the quality super 8 film can produce is astronomically better than any digital phone or otherwise would capture surely.

And hey gazza I'm not singling you out here I know you know what film is but people went haywire for filming the stones plus I'm explaining it for those who may not know, there's no reason why one of those lucky people who got to be there wouldn't have filmed it if they had a camera with them. And they could've gotten the film confiscated if noticed (or not) and they've just sat on it. The mystery films I've got were sat on for decades upon decades and still nobody knows what they are.

Yes - audio. Not video. In 1977 you could release a live album. You couldnt release a home video because the format didnt exist.  Any shows that were professionally filmed were done so for TV or cinematic release. they're hardly going to release Super 8 footage

I didn't say they would release infact I said they wouldn't because if they had caught somebody filming it and stowed it away we would never know. And yes, not only did home projectors exist for numerous formats of film but VHS was actually brought to America in exactly 1977. Not to mention Betamax tapes existing - and Japenese video discs, I could go on and on about home video formats that were widely used and distributed by '77. Its not that they couldn't have produced it, they just simply chose not to.

They werent in 'widespread' use. Video machines existed -  yes. And they were ridiculously expensive - a few months wages. I remember a cousin of mine buying one around 1977 for about Ł700, which is nuts. We got our first one at Christmas 1981 - by that time, they had come down to 'only' about Ł450.

Buying videos from a store however for home use was for most people something that was in the future. As far as I'm aware, the Stones didnt release any home videos until 1983 (Lets Spend The Night Together / Stones In The Park). I cant think of any musical artist who was releasing home videos in the 70's - can you?

Look dude, I'm not going around in circles over this. Now you're trying to back me into a corner over fear of not being right about saying things like "you couldn't release a home video because the format didn't exist" We weren't on the topic of how widespread it was. And the beatles and stones were actually releasing super 8 footage back in the 60's for home video use. Outside of that, bootlegs existed period. Handheld camera's everyone used in widespread since 1965, is that not a form of home video? Here's a concert VHS from 1978 since you just had to change the subject. https://imgur.com/a/oR431Zl
Whatever about the price, whatever about the band themselves actually releasing it. Bootlegs were common place, which you're entirely discrediting at this point. The band would commonly re-confiscate this footage if they got caught. Here's bootleggers with super 8 camera's here in this video if you need a visual as to how it worked or something, Nevermind the VHS shit it is entirely off topic now. El Macambo footage CAN exist. What's so hard about admitting it might exist? Guess someone's glass is half empty.

Im nearly tired of even entertaining/teaching this mass display of narcissism/egoism

I'm not your 'dude' and if you want to reduce this to personal insults, take yourself elsewhere.  I'm well aware that super 8 movies and bootlegs existed for years before 1977.

We can disagree in a respectful manner about whether they would, should or could have recorded this, but  (unfortunately) the shows werent filmed. A pal of mine in Ottawa won a radio contest for tickets for the second night and confirmed that there didnt seem to be any film cameras.

My question about home video releases in the 70s was a genuine query because I simply dont know of any. That ELO video album was recorded in 1978 but not released until 1980, however the discography here suggests they released a video album of their 'Discovery' album in 1979. So - thank you for providing that example.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out_of_the_Blue:_Live_at_Wembley

Rather than El Mocambo, I'm more suprised the Stones didnt release 'Some Girls Live in Texas' as a home video around that time. It was filmed for a cinema release, but left in the can.

Presumably not many people had video decks in the late 70s early 80s so sales of a home video would be poor?

It seems that info and  a youtube link  for a  single of IORR and 'Rip This Joint' appeared on a Japanese site earlier today only to be quickly withdrawn. Seems someone jumped the gun!
It also indicated that the release will be 2CD'S and 4 LP's

(thanks,Cristiano and Roger Riffin for the info)

Seems the release date will be 29th April (edit - put back to May 13th)  and here's the 23-song track listing :

https://www.fnac.com/a16817110/The-Rolling-Stones-Live-At-The-El-Mocambo-CD-albu...

01 - Honky Tonk Woman
02 - All Down The Line
03 - Hand Of Fate
04 - Route 66
05 - Fool To Cry
06 - Crazy Mama
07 - Mannish Boy
08 - Crackin’ Up
09 - Dance Little Sister
10 - Around And Around
11 - Tumbling Dice
12 - Hot Stuff
13 - Star Star
14 - Let’s Spend The Night Together
15 - Worried Life Blues
16 - Little Red Rooster
17 - It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It)
18 - Rip This Joint
19 - Brown Sugar
20 - Jumpin’ Jack Flash
21 - Melody
22 - Luxury
23 - Worried About You

Rough translation :
When the Rolling Stones took over the stage at the El Mocambo club in Toronto on March 4 and 5, 1977, the 300 people in attendance were dumbfounded.
The concert kept secret until the appearance of the group on stage made the headlines and relaunched the current world tour.
From Live at El Mocambo we only knew the 4 titles present on Love You Live, here for the first time is the complete set where we find the group at the top of their game, with a top-notch repertoire and the classics

...

...

The setlist has never really been properly confirmed before. I've seen 'Worried Life Blues' listed before, but was always skeptical, thinking it was maybe 'Worried About You' (a song which no one would have known at the time) and maybe someone didnt get the title right. Assuming this is the setlist from the songs performed on the night, its also a bit strange to see a show end with an unreleased song.

Would they really have ended a show with those three songs? Maybe some of them are bonus tracks from the first night and some of the damaged tapes from that show were actually salvageable.

Theres also no sign of 'Happy' which has been listed as being performed, so maybe we can assume that 'Worried Life Blues' was sung by Keith (he did record it a week later in that marvellous solo session when he was out on bail)

Assuming all of these songs are taken from the 5th March show, of the songs listed, tracks 7,8,10 and 16 were previously available (although there were some edits and overdubs) and songs 3,4, 9, 14 23 plus an incomplete performance of song 6 and an unedited song 16 have previously circulated on bootlegs.

The Stones havent overdubbed archive releases before, so I guess you can expect the versions of the LYL songs to sound a bit different to this release.

Any overdubs would have been done for the songs on LYL. They dont overdub archive releases. It's certainly got a very different mix to the songs we've previously heard.

Here's the wetransfer link. Holy shit, its fantastic

https://wetransfer.com/downloads/92455f07abdc2898637e359c6037d8df20220313074429/...

I'm hearing now the release date has been delayed two weeks to May 13.

Found this on facebook - thank you to Raymond from Stonesforum for unearthing it

A Canadian radio interview with Mick and Keith from 1977 around the time of Love You Live's release where they talk about playing at the El Mocambo (and Keith's heroin bust!)

Sounds different to the 4 tracks that we know on LYL. The sample almost has a stadium sound to it with a fair bit of reverb.

I knew that the stones The Stones were billed as ‘Blue Sunday and The Cockroaches’  for the warm up club show at Sir Morgan’s Cove, in Worcester in 1981

But apparently also for the Mocambo Show... is this true?

yes, they were billed as The Cockroaches

The 2-song single is available for streaming tomorrow (Friday). If you're reading this in Asia, Australia or New Zealand, you should be able to listen already.

Release date is 13th May, going by this presale link from Bravado in Germany

https://www.bravado.de/p51-i0602445495894/the-rolling-stones/live-at-the-el-moca...

Formats are 2-CD, 4-LP and 4-LP (neon vinyl)

here's the blurb :

A legendary event in the incredible 60-year history of the Rolling Stones is being released in full for the first time on Friday, April 29th.

Live At The El Mocambo marks the first official appearance of the group's two famous secret concerts at the 300-capacity Toronto club in March 1977.

It features the Stones' full set from the March 5 show, plus three bonus tracks from the March 4 gig, newly mixed by Bob Clearmountain.

Only four of the performances found their way onto the Love You Live album that followed in September 1977, which was dominated by tracks captured on the band's 1975 and '76 tours, with the full set having never been heard before.

As the Stones took to the stage of the “El Mo,” a fixture of the Toronto music scene since the 1940s, punk and disco were both rearing into full view, supposedly ready to see off a band who had already been at the top of their game for 15 years. Over two nights, in an intimate space in one of their favourite cities, they were about to make that prognosis look foolish indeed.

The gigs became reality after the El Mocambo was identified as the potential home for a secret booking.

A radio contest was organised in which the prize was tickets to see Canadian rock heroes April Wine, supported by an unknown band called the Cockroaches.

Guess who they turned out to be...

On the nights, naturally, April Wine were themselves the opening act, and so it was that the Stones rolled back the years to the exhilarating club incarnation of their early years.

Against all the odds, the band produced two nights of exhilarating music that they still talk about in Toronto, and in Rolling Stones legend, to this day.

It was a setlist for all seasons, from Muddy Waters' 'Mannish Boy' and Bo Diddley's 'Crackin' Up' to staples such as 'Let's Spend The Night Together' and 'Tumbling Dice,'

and back to the blues with Big Maceo's 'Worried Life Blues' and Willie Dixon's 'Little Red Rooster.'

There was the live debut of 'Worried About You,' not heard in studio form until 1981's Tattoo You, and more highlights from 'Honky Tonk Woman' to 'Hot Stuff.'

Forty-five years on, this is a trip back to the intensity of the Crawdaddy Club in the Stones' earliest days, as revisited by the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world.

One week to go and we have another 2-track streaming single out on Friday, which should be available after Midnight Thursday in whatever time zone you're in

Tumbling Dice
Hot Stuff

With some nice between song banter between Mick and Ronnie. Both versions sound great. 'Hot Stuff' is especially and absolutely blows the LYL version out of the water.

well, Friday is almost upon us. Got to hear this yesterday and considering its been probably the most desired archive release since they put out Brussels 73 in 2011, it's everything we've ever hoped it would be.

No doubt I'll have more superlatives when I dig into it a few more times but this is YaYas/Brussels level of greatness. The Ronnie era line up of the band never sounded as amazing as this. The performances from everyone and the sound are absolutely stellar.  Why didnt they release THIS as 'Love You Live' instead of filling that album out with lesser performances from the 1976 tour (and with much inferior vocals to boot)?

Do not miss this release.

Good God that was a special treat. I miss when the Stones sounded like this.

I really miss Charlie Watts. The man was unreal. It's rare for a drummer to have that much chemistry with the piano. He's playing drums, yet manages to sound melodic. The guy was pure magic.

Second listening... this is what they must release, not the same stuff in new formats or with new mixes or whatever. At that speed soon we'll have the Steven Wilson 7.1 Bluray  Audio releases of all the albums

But with more releases like this one (Mocambo) we'll be more than happy

This is simply in the creme de la creme of Stones releases. As good as Ya Ya's or Brussels or the Roundhouse and Leeds Lungs Out shows. A scintillating hour and a half from perhaps the last time the band ever sounded truly dangerous. The groove on "Worried Life Blues" is like chocolate, and "Dance Little Sister" is a revelatory monster of a cut that begs for the song to be revived. Best ever "Let's Spend the Night Together," and the one that should've been the pro forma version ever since. Nasty "Jack Flash," the blues cuts, even "Luxury" sounds excellent. Keith is on fire throughout and playing for his life. Mick at his lascivious best. Ronnie coming into his own, and Charlie and Bill holding down the chaos as well as they ever have.

10/10.

Among other things, I think it’s got the definitive Crazy Mama.

It’s a wonderful bit of fan service from Mick to get this cleaned up and released.

I wasnt really sure quite what Ollie Brown added to the shows around this time but his contribution is glorious on this. Billy Preston is in stellar form as well. This was their last ever shows with the band, too. They went out on a high. Stu's ivory tinkling is just perfect too.

I've always thought 'Crackin' Up' was one of the Stones most underrated covers. I know we're familiar with this version from LYL but it sounds even better here. They were obviously listening to 'The Harder They Come' around this time because there's a noticeable musical nod to Desmond Dekker's 'Shanty Town' towards the end of the track and Mick incorporates The Maytals' 'Sweet & Dandy' into the end of 'Tumbling Dice'

And does Mick really sing 'if I ever get back to LA/I'm gonna fuck you dead or alive' in the last verse of 'Starfucker' ?  Grin Grin

How The Rolling Stones Set Up Their Secret Toronto Gigs Of 1977

This excerpt from the liner notes to ‘Live At The El Mocambo’ details how the group pulled off a wild secret gig.

In 1977, the Rolling Stones played secret shows over the course of two nights at Toronto’s El Mocambo. Now available officially for the first time, Live At The El Mocambo collects the best of those performances, showcasing the band at the top of their game in the most intimate of settings. In this excerpt from the liner notes to the release, Paul Sexton describes how the band pulled off the secret gig.

As ever when the Rolling Stones blew into any town with a “secret” gig on their minds, the dates at the 300-capacity club known locally as El Mo had to be set up with considerable subterfuge. The smokescreen came in the form of Montreal rock favorites April Wine, who would later make their big international play with such Capitol albums as Harder…Faster and the platinum-selling The Nature of the Beast.

Keeping anything on the down low when it involved the most famous rock ‘n’ roll band in the world was always a challenge… [But] the visit had been scoped out months before, by Mick Jagger and tour manager Peter Rudge. The previous year, they had walked into the city’s bespoke Windsor Arms Hotel, a bolthole for visiting celebrities, as they scouted potential sites for the club idea. Duff Roman, radio personality and executive and a bastion of the Canadian music business, happened to be there too.

“I saw [them] walk in,” he later told the National Post. “I tried to play it cool, and wrote a message on my CHUM FM business card that said, ‘I’m here if you need anything.’ I called the waiter over and had him take it to Mick and Peter’s table. Rudge looked at it first and then Mick wanted to see. After a while, they looked over and I nodded, smiled and pointed. Then they left. It was months before I heard from them again.”

When he did, Rudge asked Roman if he thought he could pull off the events without incurring a media orgy. “I told him that we could,” Roman recalled, “and then started thinking about how we could actually do it without anyone knowing.”

The booker for the venue, Dave Bluestein, came up with the idea of announcing the March shows as by April Wine. A radio contest was organized in which listeners were asked the question “What would you do to see the Rolling Stones play live?” It was a tactic that ensured a full house of real devotees, even if it also prompted the arrival of more than a few nude polaroids. The prize was tickets to see April Wine with an unknown band called the Cockroaches. Guess who.

“We had natural cover,” says Bluestein, “because if anything got out, we could say, ‘No, look, April Wine is playing. That’s the gig. It says so right here. Another band was added to the April Wine shows called the Cockroaches, which was the Stones’ alias. On the day of the first show, the band rehearsed upstairs and soundchecked for the live recording.”

The band had not played live in seven months. They were dealing with a welter of internal issues, including their attempts to prevent the News of the World from publishing images from Robert Frank’s infamous 1972 film Cocksucker Blues. Halfway through rehearsals in Toronto, Mick had to rush to New York, where his daughter Jade had appendicitis. But it was Keith’s debilitating burdens that were most urgent in their minds.

“I can tell you, I cared about Keith, and not just as a work colleague,” said Bill Wyman in his Rolling With The Stones book of 2002. “We had been through so much in the previous 13 years, conquered the world, shared in an adventure the likes of which mere words cannot do justice to. But it was true, Keith didn’t have to live by the rules of normal society…but when all is said and done, it’s Keith’s life.”

On the day of the first El Mocambo date, the Stones arrived for a soundcheck at 4.30pm. Passers-by, catching the echoes of ‘Honky Tonk Women’ or ‘Tumbling Dice,’ no doubt marveled at the authenticity of the Stones covers act that must surely be playing that night. When the band returned for the show, April Wine were naturally now in a support slot that would yield their own Live At The El Mocambo album later that year. Indeed, the cachet of their involvement in this unforgettable moment would earn them their passport to the international stage.

As if the Stones weren’t already occupying enough unwanted column inches, there was more red meat for the media when Margaret Trudeau, Canada’s First Lady and wife of Prime Minister Pierre, turned up for the gig with Mick and Ronnie. This was before the public knew that Trudeaus’ six-year marriage, the anniversary of which they were notably not celebrating together, was in tatters.

Margaret attended both shows, leaping up and down near the mixing desk. Curtains twitched, editors frothed. Back home, News At Ten ran a report. “She just wanted to see the shows, and that’s the end of it,” Mick told the CBC.

[As a result] the cat was out of the bag, and the Cockroaches out in the open, by the second night. “Word had got out,” remembered Bill, “and it was very difficult to get in.” Keith, undoubtedly relieved to escape the press frenzy even for the length of the gig, reflected: “The minute I got onstage, it felt just like another Sunday gig at the Crawdaddy. It immediately felt the same…it was one of those weird things in Toronto. Everybody’s going around talking doom and disaster, and we’re up on stage at the El Mocambo, and we never felt better. I mean, we sounded great.”

To read the full liner notes, including a lengthy description of the second night’s show, buy or stream Live At The El Mocambo.

Let's see if I can get it right this time. This release and the 78 tour is Ronnie at his apex as a guitar player. Of course he has been wonderful since and his slide playing is amazing now, but he was marvelous on this and on the 78 tour. He was as good as anyone was at that time and added some real magic to the band.

I always thought he played the boogie woogie type stuff on the blues songs. Billy Preston was magic as well. This is as good as anything they have ever released live.

After a few listens, the version of 'Little Red Rooster' here is a different performance to the one on 'Love You Live', so that version is therefore from the 4th March show.

Trying also to compare with the 7 songs that werent on LYL but have appeared on bootlegs, taken from soundboards and acetates. Its not easy but after a quick listen, 'Lets spend the night together' seems to be different so the bootleg version is from the first night also. And obviously, 'Worried about you' on both the bootleg and as a bonus track on the new album are the same version (4th March) as it wasnt played on the second night.

The between song chatter on LYL is taken from the 5th March show, although strangely they seem to have left out the band intros on this release. Weirdly, the brief 'alright Margaret?' shout out to Margaret Trudeau before 'Around and Around' on LYL has been edited out here.

I'm nearly finished updating the setlists page for this site (was just waiting on this release coming out). Would like to see what the exact setlist for night 1 actually was but it remains elusive.

It sounds like Stu's playing style to me, too. I know that on the 75-76 tour, Stu tended to just sit in on a few songs. The band introductions on LYL (where they dont introduce him either) have been edited out from this release - but - he's there. Seems to be carrying out his role as a roadie in this photo, but he must have played on some songs as the album liner notes credit him as playing piano

Gazza said  "the brief 'alright Margaret?' shout out to Margaret Trudeau before 'Around and Around' on LYL has been edited out here."

Or was it added to LYL?. Did it not originally sound 'dodgy'? Or is there an existing boot with it on?

There's no bootleg source to compare it to. All thats previously circulated was the four LYL songs ('Rooster is from 4/3/77, the others are 5/3/77) plus a soundboard of 7 other songs taken from both nights (of those, 'Crazy mama' is cut and 'Worried about you' and 'LSTNT' come from 4th March - the first two of those 3 songs are on the new album).

The rest of the dialogue on LYL before 'around & around' - ('everything alright in the critics section?' etc) was left in. They've omitted the shoutout to Margaret Trudeau. It always seemed like part of the show to me.

Tactful.  Grin

I think it was either overdubbed or flown in from the first night - In addition to being its own flabbergastingly good self, this release sheds a lot of light into how much care went into distilling the essence of the El Mocambo vibe on side three of LYL.   I have always laughed at that guy yelling "SIT DOWN!" after Around and Around - it's always been such a cool way to end the side of an album. But he shows up much earlier here, he was clearly stuck on at the end intentionally.

After 35 years of listening to the LYL version a not inconsiderable amount, reading the Flippo book over and over and soaking up everything I could about this gig, I'd halfway convinced myself that the tapes were either fucked up or unable to live up to their legend.  Incredible to have the myth turned into reality.  Best Stones release since the Houston video.

Interesting. Yeah, some of the between song banter is edited in from different parts of the show on LYL. I did read that Margaret was at both shows, so anything's possible.

This is literally the only place I know of where I could come back and say "They moved the 'sit down!' guy!" and someone else might actually find it interesting.

This release is also such a fitting tribute to our beloved great dear departed jazz drummer, whose performance is maybe even better than usual.

I can hardly listen to the breakdown on Dance Little Sisterwithout getting a lump in my throat and watery eyes.

One of the features is that Gazza made that based (most of the time) on his big and great collection of live recordings (many on cassette tapes) and official releases and of course the references on the main page (soon to be updated in full)

Hi Goo! Welcome to the asylum.
Feel free to express yourself here...as long as you don't turn it to something of a personal attack, you are free to roam as you wish.
I've tried a few times, but I have not reached that high-water limit, it seems, lol

Did you hit any of the 2019 or 2021 US shows?
Others may have questions for you as well...kick back and stay a while.

A blast from the past indeed.  Never totally left, good sir.  Started a family, etc...

I have been listening to very little music the past few months, but the last couple of weeks is a very different story. El Mocambo almost non stop. Back in the day the boot was cool. I never thought we would get this. Truly sublime and another reminder that the Stones are life, the rest is just details.

The screamingly hot (and moist)  question still remaining this Summer is surely what  exactly are the lyrics sung by MJ in the 'extra# verse of Luxury on the ElMo-Lipman Live CD, or whatever it's currently called.
"Blackport / Black porch / Stockport on a Tuesday, and Danny goes to bed, You could feed a poor man on what they throw away....". Then there's  a couple of lines possibly written by Stanley Unwin..

What are the exact-ish words of this great musical pumper?
Are the lyrics he lyrics  revealed on some'7s Tour bootleg or other, or elsewhere?
And was this song - secondarily at least - about seeing Keith lying hot & sodden on the beach while more serious work was pressing?
