Today is the anniversary of the death of Jerry Garcia.
27 years ago.
This is the time of year Deadheads call the "Days Between" (after the song), meaning the days between his birth on Aug 1 and death on Aug 9.

I went to approx 90 Dead shows and 15 Jerry shows.
The JGB was always HOT! The Dead, well, not always...

A side note...on that night, I went to go see The RAMONES...that nite, in true punk rock spirit...Johnny wore a t-shirt saying "I'll be grateful when Jerry's dead". It had some dopey cartoon drawing of Jerry dead...it was crushing and funny at the same time.

no great surprise considering his age and ill-health (saw a photo of him last week being presented with an award by Kris Kristofferson as he was too ill to attend the ceremony and was confined to bed and the impression I got was that he didnt have much time left). Then, of course there was the false TMZ report early this week that he'd passed on.

Nonetheless, a sad day. The last of the first wave of rock 'n' rollers and for me, second only to Elvis as the greatest from that era. I'm actually even more a fan of his 'second' career as a country artist. I don't think he had any equals as a country singer - maybe only George Jones.

Bob Dylan is on tour in Europe this month. The setlist for each show has been identical so far, but tonight he closed the show in Nottingham with this. A great choice. I hope he keeps it in for the shows I'll be seeing in Glasgow and Dublin in the next week or so

I only got to see The Killer once, when he joined Springsteen onstage at a show in Dublin in 1993. He basically took over the whole show and played Great Balls of Fire and Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On. 35,000 people were there to see Bruce, who seemed perfectly happy to play second fiddle for ten minutes and was in so much awe of him that he had the facial expression of a 6 year old kid on Christmas morning who had got every single present he'd asked from Santa.

Do yourself a favour and play the 'Live at the Star Club Hamburg' album from 1964. Electrifying stuff.
