I was at the Twickenham shows in 2006 and mentioned to Stonesdoug that when I was doing the setlists page that by my calculations the 2nd Twickenham show was scheduled to be the band's 2,000th gig (it would have originally been one of the Spanish shows a few days earlier but they were cancelled as Mick developed a sore throat). I think Doug then mentioned it to someone connected with the official website and a few days later there was a post on the site crediting us with the info and an interview with some of the band members about it. It was much appreciated. They also finally made us 'website of the month' or something around that time.
I've never claimed the figure is 100% accurate though, but I'd certainly say its no more than 4-5 shows either way.
Its kind of ironic that 7 years later both myself and the RO facebook page (they somehow made a connection that we were linked which is a bit creepy!) were banned from posting on the band's official page because I committed the cardinal sin of replying to a facebook post asking 'what would you like us to play at Hyde Park?' by saying 'it doesnt matter - you'll play what you want anyway'. The ban is still in effect. Very sensitive souls, they are.
Oddly enough when you visit Exhibitionism one of the first things you'll see is an impressive looking timelapse on a wall which lists every concert from 1962 to the present day - and the total comes to something like 1,670. It clearly ignores the fact that in the early days it was the norm to play two shows per day so their figure is out by around 500.
