In 1969, Rolling Stones co-founder Brian Jones "quit" the band. He died a month later.
At that time the news was shocking in the U.S.
No one had a clue about his physical or visa problems. I remember the summer before that Bill Graham's Fillmore East sold ticket for a closed circuit broadcast of a Stones concert in Italy. I actually bought a ticket. Then it was canceled with no reason given. Wonder if it was due to Brian's condition now. Kicking myself for bringing my ticket back for a $5 refund. Wish I had kept it now.

I knew they were planning to play a televised show at the Colosseum in Rome - but that was in June 1969, not 1968. I'm unaware that it was anything more than tentative. Never heard of one in 1968!

Filming was due to take place on 25-26 June 1969.

As it was to be new footage for the Rock n Roll Circus, the fact that Brian had been replaced between the original show and the newly scheduled date would have put the kibosh on it.

Mick's subsequent comments a bit further down about firing Brian in June are interesting. According to him, not only was Brian unable to perform but he had no desire to do so.

Guess I did have date wrong. I'll always defer to you.
But I did buy a ticket and I'm almost positive Brian was still in the group when they went on sale.

One of my biggest disappointments was never seeing the Stones live with Brian in the band.
Can you imagine him on stage, if healthy, in '69?
Or even the look on his face if he could see the group on stage today?

He probably was. He only left the band just over two weeks before the scheduled date.

I'm just surprised to read that tickets went on sale for a closed circuit event because I was always under the impression the show was never confirmed. Maybe it was - either that or Bill Graham was chancing his arm !

I'd imagine the plans for it were scrapped before Brian was fired. The Hyde Park show (July 5) was itself only announced on June 13 and wasn't even planned until Mick attended the Blind Faith concert there on June 7th.

These two Rolling Stones’ songs were recorded by The Who as a gesture of support after Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were jailed on drug charges. It was their intention to continue recording Jagger/Richards songs for as long as the pair were in jail but they were released before The Who had a chance to record anymore. Pete played bass on both tracks because John was away on his honeymoon. He was contacted aboard the Queen Elizabeth on his way to New York at 3.00am to hear the playback. An unamused John commented “I had to go to the radio room just to hear that. I thought somebody had died!”

On this day in 1968, the live debut of Jumping Jack Flash, Empire Pool, Wembley, London – 12-May 1968 © NME

1.- It was 12 days before its release date, so it was new to the audience!

2.- The last “public” show with Brian Jones (his last show was the one at the Rock and Roll Circus later that year, but was private show)

3.- Only JJF and Satisfaction were played.
