This record is so good, it's not funny. Costello and Lowe and Graham Parker slaved so that other bands could have 29-minute Power Pop apotheoses like this one. Oasis never pulled together 29 minutes as good as this, on any of their 70-minute albums.
To be fair, Weezer never did it again, either. But here they're writing chapters of the same book that the Beatles began in the "Second Album" period - one of the songs even begins with two lines cribbed from "You Can't Do That."
Alexander Pope never wrote a couplet that pairs four words of one syllable with one word of four syllables, adding an extra metric foot in the first line to create a double-N sound re-echoed at the end of the second line:
"I can't go on - darlin', O-bli-vi-on"
You have to go back to the Everly Brothers singing Felice and Boudleaux Bryant songs to get this kind of lyrical craft.
The best rock of its kind since Big Star's "Radio City."
