Anybody here ever seen a therapist/psychologist?

If so, did it help?

My dad says it would be a good idea for me to see one. I have trouble concentrating on work and getting motivated to do stuff. And my apartment and car are always a bit (very) messy. I'm not sad, though, al all. I enjoy life very much. I do have some trouble getting excited about the things my peers are getting excited about. Any thoughts?

If I had the cash I would do it. I have issues.  I am obsessed with the Rolling Stones among other "interests".  I fall in with alcoholics all the time. I have low self esteem and I have experienced a roadblock in my career and personal life and thus have experienced some attitude issues related to same.  I gush over-emotionally in empathy for things that are in need and in pain and take on the pain internally which is not to my benefit.  I am attracted to needy people because they are less threatening to me.  I have had to examine myself on my own b/c I don't have the funds to break it down with someone else.

Everyone probably could use some therapy.  I have an excellent therapist and without that help I would not be here.  So I recommend getting mental help.  Smiley

Good luck to you.

depending on the severity of symptoms and if you can afford it... I have to say, I find helping others, to be the most theraputic thing I can do... I'm more productive in my own life and busy doing something that makes a difference... There's many resources to get it going, and it is free... I did therapy, and found out, I had more to offer my therapist than they did me... it was kinda lame, but worth it to realize, I'm not as fucked up as I think I am... I can't say it enough, helping others... it is such a powerful solution...

Yes, I was lucky to live in a place (Sri Lanka) where a UK-trained therapist saw me for $6 an hour.  I went once a week for three years and totally explored my inner self and to a large degree pinpointed why I have the problems I do.

Doesn't sound like you don't really need it though.  Hell, I looked at your profile and you're all of 21. I was a fucking slob at that age.  Maybe you should cut down on the weed if you smoke regularly.  That might snap you to.  And as for blow, remember it's an intelligence test.  If you're doing it, you failed.

Nothing to be ashamed of in seeking therapy; most people who need it don't get it.

From my own experience try to avoid a Psychiatrist (an MD) as they tend to be overly eager to write a prescription rather than OFFER COUNSEL.

Look for a Psychologist (PhD) or a Certified Social Worker (CSW).

And don't be afraid to shop around. You have to find someone who YOU feel comfortable talking to.
Good luck!

LJ.

Holden,

You can talk about your issues to a guidance counselor at school or to a pastor for free.   If that doesn't help, you can try a psychologist.   But, remember, medicine is a business, and some medical professionals put their financial interests  before their patients' best interests.

on a side issue - after 30 plus years i totally quit smoking after just 1 hour of hypno - therapy

made me wonder why you couldn't get your self hypnotized to do all manner of things -  be more motivated , confident, relaxed, able to tap into and articulate and solve creative/intellectual challenges, overcome irrational fears - whatever you want - the list could go  on

what is that old thing about 90% of our brain power lies dormant?

CRAZY MAMA
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Well you're crazy Mama
With your ball and chain
And your sawn off shotgun
Blown out brains, yeah

You can scandalize me
Scorn my name
You can steal my money
And that don't mean a doggone thing

Cause if you really think you can push it
I'm going to bust your knees with a bullet
Your crazy mama, ah yeah

Well your old time religion
Is just a superstition
You going to pay high prices
For your sacrificises

Well your blood and thunder
Sure can't faze me none
If your going to keep on coming
I'm gonna take it all head on

If you don't believe I'm going to do it
Just wait till you get hit by that bullet

Don't think I ain't thought about it
But it sure makes my shackles rise
And cold blood murder
Make me want to draw the line

Well your crazy mama
With your ball and chain
Plain psychotic
Plain insane

If you don't think I'm gonna do it
Just wait for the thud of the bullet

Congrats SIA.  How long ago was that?  I quit almost 4 years ago and nearly wore out my jaws chewing Nicorette Gum.  I really enjoyed smoking but I'm glad the monkey is off my back at last.

coming up three years - i weaned my self off smokes a few times with the gum but after 2 - 10 months i would crack and fire up again but following the hypno i have absolutely zero interest in tobacco -

no doubt tobacco is a totally useless drug - it's doesn't get you high - it stinks - it costs a fortune and it is destined to take years off your life - so yeah, i'm glad to be rid of it too

I cant do it ever, cant effort a psychologist no more. I was been in teraphy for many years, half of my life.
But she couldnt helps me. just given me bad advices.
I am still with the fear wearing on, and nobody could help me. And no one might do it never more.
No matter if I'm talking with my FB friends, virtual people, or with the people in my real life.
No ways, if I am try and try. no way no more.
If you got friends, then maybe you will get by. But if you havent them, you will dont get by.
You stay alone. The fate is just a shot away
But if I fall, I will stand on my feet tall once again.

Pretty good advice all around. I do see one and yes it helps, although it's free being Canada and all.

Sounds like the issue may be Depression. It may just be being 21. It may be too much weed or whatever else, which in turn could be used as an escape from Depression or Anxiety.

Do some research into the topic on the net.

Look up Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder on wiki and see if it rings a bell.

Only you know the answer, Only you know what you are thinking.

If you feel this is something you need help with, don't worry about any stigma.

People respect people who look after themselves.

Good luck.

I saw a psychiatrist when I was around 13 or 14 year-old. I have a muscular and dexterity disorder down the right-side of my body and was at the age when you become a little more aware of things around you: I guess I just started to notice my problems a little more. I was also suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and I found talking to a trained professional to be an immense help. I no longer suffer from the issues that partly blighted my early teenage-years.

Holden, seeing someone may help. It isn’t for everyone, but you won’t know unless you take that step. He or she may be able to unlock whatever problems you may or may not have.

I have not read what others have written...but from personal expirience...if you have to ask...perhaps you should...

a quick list...

whatever your referals are...SHOP AROUND...call each professional and briefly discuss what your immediate issues are...ask what kind of experience they have in your particular areas...and have a chat with them on the phone...

make some quick notes about your comfort level as you discuss these things w/ each therapist...

then go for it...some, if not most, EAP programs offer a deal where you get 3 sessions for free and you pay your deductible after that...check that out...well worth it.

Good Luck

ps...I am looking for a new therapist at the moment...simply because i recently relocated...and blah blah blah...

If you got Medical problems you go to a Doctor, you got Eye Problem You go get Professional help with the eyes, if you yourself feel you need to talk to some one, go talk, either a professional or some one you trust. I have to agree with the majority of the Good people here if Dad Says you might benefit, he's more than likely  right.
