Of songs never on an official release.  "Rarities" is an official release (sadly).  Covers can be included as well.

1.Think I'm Going Mad
2.For Your Precious Love
3.Living In the Heart of Love

AND my favorite alternate take of an officially released tune:

Acoustic version of All Down the Line

Wasn't 'Think I'm Going Mad' a b-side?

An outtake, imo, is a track that is, initialy,  left unreleased.

True, Jiving Sister Fanny was on Metamorphosis, but wasn't that an Allen Klein release to capitalize on the Stones tour? Did the Stones have anything to do with that release?

Sort of. They were originally going to release a 10-track album of ABKCO leftovers which had been compiled by Wyman called "The Black Box", but "Metamorphosis" was put out instead.

The wikipedia entry gives a background to it :
After the release of Hot Rocks 1964–1971 in 1971, an album entitled Necrophilia was compiled for release as the follow-up, featuring many previously unheard tunes. While that project failed to materialize - with More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies) being released in its place - most of the unreleased songs were held over for a future project. In 1974, in order to give it an air of authority, Bill Wyman involved himself in compiling an album he entitled Black Box. However, Allen Klein wanted more Mick Jagger/Keith Richard songs in the project for monetary reasons, and Wyman's version remained unreleased. Metamorphosis was issued in its place.

Most tracks that appear on side one of the vinyl album (thus all tracks up until "Try a Little Harder") are mainly demo songs, written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for other artists to perform. They were mostly recorded by session musicians like Big Jim Sullivan on guitar, Clem Cattini on drums, and Jimmy Page on guitar. On most of these tracks the only Rolling Stones member that appears is Mick Jagger. While "Out of Time" and "Heart of Stone" were already well-known, they appear here in drastically different renditions, alongside several other obscure recordings created up until the Sticky Fingers sessions of 1970.

Incidentally, the original acetate for "The Black Box" was auctioned at Sothebys about 15 years ago and was bought by a good friend of mine who has posted and uploaded torrents on here previously.

Are all 10 of Bill's Black Box tracks on Metamorphosis?  I tried to google it but got only the big CD box?  Is the running order known?

My three to add, all from the mid 60s:

Get Yourself Together
Lookin' Tired
Track 15 from Satanic Sessions

The Storm is a Voodoo Lounge-era b-side - No good!

Generally, I am not such a fan of studio outtakes, but I'll make an exception for the following:

And Mr Spector and Mr Hyde Came Too
I Can See It - why was this not released? It sounds pretty complete to my ears
We Had It All - the most  beautiful Keith-voiced ballad, imo.
You Got It Made - should've at least made the grade as a B-side

So many great outtakes, hard to pick three, let's see :
- Gangster's Moll
- Honest Man
- Make it Now

I think Wyman's BlackBox had at least two tracks that never appeared anywhere else : Heart It and Aftermath, both being instrumentals if memory serves or were these on Necrophilia ?

still a fool.... is a great song

highway child.  i used to listen to a lot back in the '90's.  a good tune.

drift away is a good one too.

all these tunes were on a greatest rarities 2-3 cd set.  i paid 25 yankee dollars for each one of these.  the 3 cd black box has got some good ones on it too.  they have instrumentals of lets spend the night together and satisfaction and several others but i hardly listen to those anymore.  i think blood red wine is on there too.

I do quite like Drift Away.  As for songs that were easily better than those that made their prospective albums, I'd go with Invitation (DW), Travellin' Man (GHS), You're Too Much (UC).

Isn't "Travellin' Man" from 1971 ?
Also "You're Too Much" is from DW, although it could be argued it bears a ressemblance to "Still in Love" !

Only three? That's harder than my trivia questions LOL
  • Still A Fool (can't believe it was taken out of Beggars Banquet)
  • Fiji Jim (bootlegged later with many other names, that's the name on my 2-LP bootleg "Accidents Will Happen")
  • We Had it All
I think I'm going to make a classification a'la Gazza with covers, originals, sung by Keith, sung by Mick, on decades, etc LOL There's a bunch, we need a real "rarities" or another "Tattoo You" with studio outtakes

Only a couple of them match the titles that are on 'Metamorphosis'

Bright Lights Big City/Cops and Robbers/I'd Much Rather Be With The Boys/Little Red Rooster (Live)/Down The Road Apiece (Live)/Don't Lie To Me/If You Let Me/Godzi/Panama Powder Room/Gold Painted Nails/Fannie Mae/Down In The Bottom

Bill also suggests that 'High Heel Sneakers' was shortlisted (although its the interviewer who mentions it - Bill just agrees) in this interview by the Brian Jones Fan Club

http://www.brianjonesfanclub.com/articles/a2_bill_wyman.pdf (see foot of page 31)

Klein rejected his choices as there wasnt enough publishing in it for him. I've never really understood what contractual reasons there were for ABKCO having the rights to issue an album of unreleased songs in the mid 70's. The Stones left Decca in 1970 and gave them the unreleasable Cocksucker Blues as a parting gift (the terms of the contract were that on leaving the label, the Stones had to submit the master of one unreleased song), so its a bit hard to comprehend why ABKCO were able to put out these songs five years after the Stones parted company with them. Anyone know?

Bill seems to have assembled the Black Box album immediately after the Rotterdam 'Black and Blue' sessions ended in early February 1975.

This topic reminds me we need NEW UNRELEASED TRACKS ! B2B and SW sessions come to mind...

Going back in time I have (please correct me if I'm wrong) :

2006 : SW outtakes with : For your Precious Love, Ready yourself (instrumental, a lightweight kind of Munich Hilton)
2003 (?) : Start Me Up (1977 version, some say it's the 1975 version,  I doubt it)
...dang...what a drought...
1996 : Voodoo Residue - VL v3 2CD boxset
1995 : Voodoo Stew and Brew : 4CD bosets
1993 : 77/78 /79 Paris sessions, Paris Results v1, v2, Better results : following the destruction of the  Pathe Marconi studios in Boulogne

There was another batch of SW outtakes popped up a few months ago, called 'Training Wheels'.

Dont forget also the 'Bigger Bang' alternates I tracked down about 18 months ago. The guy I got them from found them on a shared computer his company used at Sterling Sound Studios in New York in summer 2005. He just saw an entry for 'Rolling Stones' and made a copy. Unfortunately he deleted his lossless version to save storage space on his computer, so they only exist in mp3 quality. Pretty good, though.

I started a sessionography spreadsheet a couple of years ago, and it's something I'll have to get back to...however, unless you have access to studio logs etc (an almost impossible task with the Stones considering the way theyve recorded down the years - various studios around the world, using home and mobile studios etc), its something that can never really be definitive and when it comes to stuff like that, I'm too much of a bloody perfectionist to put my name to something that I know has some uncertainty and errors.

At one point I toyed with the idea of a book on the subject which would have been interespersed with interviews with various sidemen and engineers etc, but it's really too huge a task. Martin Elliott told me that there was something like 20 years of research that went into his 'Recording Sessions' book.  Considering the fact I havent got around to updating and correcting the setlists page for 3 years, the time it would take to do a sessions page in the way that I'd be happy with doesnt bear thinking about.

Ah Martin's first book is what gave me the bug, and killed my student's wallet, in the summer of 1990. It was great to read his comments and these tracks I'd only vaguely heard of at the time, like the famed '75 sessions with Jeff Beck. I still don't know where he heard the "winsome opening" (citing from memory) of the 1975 version of Start me Up though, actually I think I may have asked him a few years ago, need to check my emails...

That project of yours would be great but, yes, quite a task. I'd spent a lot of time on my website, actually I need to put it back online at some point...hey now was a good time ! : http://stones.servebeer.com/

Had totally missed out on "Training Wheels", will check the tracker for it. Was it one of these other tapes that the SW2006 poster had alluded to? Any new tracks? CONTINUED : found a good review here http://www.collectorsmusicreviews.com/rolling-stones/rolling-stones-training-whe... wow looks very interesting, Ready Yourself with Keith vox and Giving it Up at last !

Sorry for forgetting about the ABB alternates, that was exciting, even though there were no unreleased tracks.
