That's awesome! And not a bad price at $45 (unless that's just the service charge). Ouch!

Me too, the last time was in 1982 at the Madison Square Garden, I was living in NYC back then. I remember we have 4 or 5 encores, it was a great GREAT show even that Freeze Frame sucks (for me)

Then on March 27, 1999 I saw Daniel Klein in Hartford (my birthday party with Princess Margaret and friends... nobody knew it was my birthday LOL) at the end of the show I had a very nice conversation with Daniel, he signed me a napkin  Grin

J. Geils was one of my favourite bands in the early 70s, their first album is in my top list along with "full house"

Thanks everyone!  Yes, this is the full band, with Steven Jo Bladd on drums.  The reunion
tour in '99 did not feature him, for he had back issues.  I caught them during the last show they played, that tour,at the Orpheum in Bahston.  It was a special gig arranged to benefit the families of seven firemen who perished in a bad fire that year.   The only time since they've played was a foundation gig headed by former Boston Bruin Cam Neely charity gig in '06, to benefit his foundation

These ducats went like hot-cakes!  I'm meeting up with folks from London, LA, Detroit, maybe Warwick RI as well.  It's really getting pub for the opening of the club, which is right in back of Fenway Pahk.  Ironically, I got to see Jay Geils last night, that is the guitar player.  In his now life, he has a jazz ensemble which he fronts.  I got a tip that he was playing at a small Chinese dinner theatre, about 10 mi from my home, so a booked it there, got in, sure enough it was him!  Headliner was James Montgomery, a great harp player.  J Geils & Gerry Beaudoin, part of J Geils jazz band sat in with Montgomery on some numbers, which ranged from jazz to bordeline blues.  Geils was great.  Rest of the night was Montgomery, who showcased six cuts from his soon to be released cd.  The release will have Joey Kramer & Brad Whitford from Aerosmith, James Cotton, DMC on a remake of "Who Do You Love?", as well as Johnny Winter, The Uptown Horns.  Catch Montgomery if you can, he can wail on the Missisippi Saxophone!  He's even had some sessions with the one & only Jagger on harp.

Was a good preview for next Thursday.....

Hear an interview with Wolf, conducted the day the show went on sale here
http://www.wzlx.com/pages/64787.php

Also, article here, looks like Bladd will not be playing after all...

Time warp city!
J Geils blasted the House Of Blues with a fury that
most bands will never realize.  For a band who has
not played in public since Dec. '99, they never missed
a beat.  Simply incredible.  Peter Wolf is the consummate
showman, weaving & bobbing, spellbinding dance moves
all night long.  Show was 2 hrs, 15 minutes, three two song
encores.  Not the order of the show, however, here's what
was played

Hard Drivin Man
Pack, Fair & Square
Homework
Serves You Right To Suffer
Southside Shuffle
Peaches Tree
Sanctuary
Love Itis
Musta Got Lost
Night Time
Aint Nothin But A House Party
Just Can't Wait
Where Did Our Love Go
Looking For A Love
Give It To Me
Shoot Your Shot
Detroit Breakdown
Crusin For A Love
First I Look At The Purse
Whammer Jammer
Start All Over
Love Stinks
Centerfold
Freeze Frame

Due to this being the 1st show @ the HOB, there were some issues regarding seating, who should go where.  In other words, my $45 back of the house ticket somehow became a third person from the stage location.  Here's some cell phone photos, as good as they are....

Met up with the webmaster, Funky Judge, who has a Wicked Pissa site
all about the band  http://www.funkyjudge.net/geils/
Met folks from the UK, Holland, Belgium, LA, Detroit (guy had vintage '79 Pine Knob
radio station stickers with him...)  Three guys next to me with Magic Dick afros...

Opening Act Andrea Gillis was killah smokin.  Great original cuts, smoky blues, infused
with Joan Jett.  Played great covers of "Jump Into The Fire", along with Little Richard, Tina
Turner, Sam Cooke, and a smoking bluesy Mahaila Jackson ( of all people!) cover

What a night!

A review from the Globe

J. Geils Band rocks the House
By Sarah Rodman, Globe Staff  |  February 20, 2009

If you're going to have a housewarming party then it makes sense to invite a band that knows how to heat things up. The powers that be at the new House of Blues wisely prevailed upon one of Boston's greatest, the J. Geils Band, to officially christen the venue, and last night the rock and soul legends lacerated Lansdowne Street.

The group may be 10 years removed from its last proper reunion outing but for two hours and 10 minutes last night it felt like they'd scarcely taken a break. They slid effortlessly through their own considerable list of hits and a passel of blues and R&B covers that had the sold-out house of 2,400 howling.

Frontman Peter Wolf remains a bundle of energy and was in great gritty voice. Clad in his signature porkpie hat and a glittery black jacket, he rolled his hands and wiggled his legs through the swagger of "Sanctuary," the reggae froth of "Give it To Me," and the jive talking intro to "Must of Got Lost" like a man half his age. All that wriggling loosened his trousers as the night wore on; at one point he called out for a belt and several came flying onstage.

The band - aided by a backing vocalist, guitarist Duke Levine, and drummer Marty Richards - matched Wolf lick for lick, veering from chugging blues to raved-up soul. Seth Justman poured out thick chunks of smoky organ. Geils peeled off spicy guitar solos that tore the joint up. With his 'fro ditty-bopping along, harmonica maestro Magic Dick threaded added tart, juke-joint flavor to the proceedings.

"We're doing this one on a wing and a prayer," announced Wolf before the familiar sing-sing organ riffs of "Freeze Frame" rang out. They made it through the evening with nary a misstep.

Deadline obligations meant an early departure but sources left behind at the show said big Geils hits such as "Centerfold" and "Love Stinks" along with covers such as Bobby Womack's "Looking for a Love" and the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go" sent the crowd even higher. Some groups may have gotten more fame and fortune but few throw a party like the J. Geils Band.

Well-liked local belter Andrea Gillis made the most of her moment in the spotlight churning out classic covers such as Ike and Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High" during her opening set.

Consider the House of Blues officially warmed.

The scene
The House was rocking and a slew of folks came-a-knocking for the big party including House of Blues co-founder Dan Aykroyd. "I'm gonna listen to Magic Dick and learn something," said the actor, who took time to sign records outside the venue before the show. The former "Saturday Night Live" star, who will bring his own Blues Brothers to the nightclub for tomorrow night's grand opening celebration, was a low-key presence but definitely wanted to check out the Geils band. "I revere those guys," he said. Also spotted in the crowd reeling and rocking were comedian Steve Sweeney, former Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau and his Ernie and the Automatics bandmate, auto mogul Ernie Boch Jr., restaurateur Christopher Myers, Lycos founder Bob Davis, Live Nation honcho Don Law, and a bunch of guys sporting Magic Dick 'fros.

The venue
Anyone who remembers being forced to become a little too familiar with your neighbors at Avalon will be pleased at this far more spacious club. The floor is wider and graded with several steps and the stage is higher, offering much improved sightlines. On the second level, which is ringed by colorful folk art and several bars, the railings are a good spot, until the crowd becomes a few people deep and then you're better off on the floor. The seated balcony area on the third floor was for VIPs only last night, but the standing room on the sides offered great views as well. Most importantly, no matter where you were in the club the sound was clear and clean. There were several opening-night glitches, however, that will need to be worked out. Many fans stood in line in the freezing rain for over an hour to get in. And before the Geils band took the stage, several bathrooms were declared out of commission, creating long lines inside as well.

Additional reporting by Globe staffer Mark Shanahan and Geoff Edgers

I was right next to this guy, who had a bettah camera!

Suffer was extreme, about the highlight of the night
Wolf had a rant before Suffer.  Told how
he visited John Lee at the Lenox Hotel in Boston.
Knocked on his door, went in the room.  Hooker was
laying on the bed, in his boxers.  Bottle of Fleichman's
on his night stand, pack of Kools, his guitar on the bed.
They talked music all night long.  J Geils used to open for
Hooker, as well as be the unofficial host when he hit Bahston,
as well as just about every other blues legend such as
Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Little Walter, Otis Spahn.
Wolf does this to this day when Jagger comes to town..
