I voted for Winter.  I just love the song.  Besides, it's a bit appropriate with the Arctic chill coming through the entire country.

Almost every song on this record is fantastic.  And yes, that does include Hide Your Love.  It is better than Can You Hear The Music.

Star Star, hands down.
Pure Berry knock off done as the Stones.
Could have been played by Brian Jones
Has the swing & boogie which they made famous
You hear it, you think swing, you recall the controversy
which it caused, both which scream Stones more than anything else.
Each lp has one of those numbers which bring attention to the lp, right?
Just played it from a '78 vine (remember those) which
was moved about here a few years back.
Of course, it gets the Wicked Pissah award....

Carry on!

Winter by a mile. One of their finest ever moments and the only bonafide classic on the entire album.

Comin' Down Again is great too, though.

Oh, I like it just fine - but its undoubtedly a step or two down in quality from what theyd done on the four albums that preceded it. Sticky Fingers and Exile barely waste a note and are brilliant from first chord to last. It suffers by comparison. Then again, what album wouldn't?

I dont think its well recorded/mixed - thankfully the Virgin remaster and the Mickboy release are superior, and whilst its good that they're in an experimental phases, the results aren't always successful. Its a fine record, but I'm not so sure its a great ROLLING STONES record. Its no coincidence that by all accounts Jimmy Miller hit the wall as a producer when they were making it.

I think recent opinion on it has been kind to it because of the overall quality of their subsequent albums.

Most of the songs are good to very good, but a 'classic' to me is something that can be talked about in the same terms as Jumpin' Jack Flash, Gimme Shelter, Moonlight Mile etc. Most Stones albums around that time had about half a dozen songs in that category. 'Winter' for me is the only song on GHS that is comparable (and its absolutely brilliant - Jagger's singing is wonderful, Taylor's guitar playing is my favourite ever performance on record by him and the string arrangement is one of the most beautiful pieces of music on ANY song).

Despite Nellie's love for it Star Star is a slightly above average rocker. This really is an average album. Some Girls was what we waited for.

You can't be serious. Don't make me start another poll. To use a sports analogy. SG can't hold GHS's jock.

Heads it is. My vote is for Winter.

LJ.

Same here: Either "Winter" or "Coming Down Again"
I voted for Coming Down Again though because Winter was an obvious winner.

I've made a terrible mistake.  I change my vote to WINTER.

This is a great album , can't understand why is not accepted among the best stones albums
It's hard to peak one song , but my choice goes to 'Coming Down Again'.

I heard Keith saying that the  hit success of "Angie" killed the rest of the album. I think he has a point on that.

Winter for me, it's a beautiful soulful song, in parts of it, Jagger does his Van Morrison thing.

"Winter" for me, too; though I can't join the general slagging of "Can You Hear the Music?" due to a unique synchronicity I experienced with that song.  It was late one night in the winter of 73-74 and I was writing a letter (for you youngsters, a letter was like an email but on paper) to a beautiful young woman who had written me after a couple years' absence because I'd appeared in one of her dreams.  As was my habit, I ended the letter with a song quote.  I'd picked the quote--"Can you feel the magick?"--before I started the letter.  As I finished the letter and wrote those words, I could hear the radio playing through a heating vent from the basement room of a housemate who always slept with the radio on.  The song, which was almost never played on the radio even then when the album was current, was (you already guessed) "Can You Hear the Music?"  So the question remains:  Can you feel the magick?

I'll start it up when Exile wraps up.  "Gimme (another) little drink!"  GHS was your first, LJ?  And Some Girls for Gazza?  I feel like an old timer.  I watched the first Ed Sullivan appearance (yes, my mom turned me on to the Stones) and the first album I owned was Let It Bleed.  Happy Friday, everyone!
