Star Star, hands down.
Pure Berry knock off done as the Stones.
Could have been played by Brian Jones
Has the swing & boogie which they made famous
You hear it, you think swing, you recall the controversy
which it caused, both which scream Stones more than anything else.
Each lp has one of those numbers which bring attention to the lp, right?
Just played it from a '78 vine (remember those) which
was moved about here a few years back.
Of course, it gets the Wicked Pissah award....
Carry on!
Right you are Nellie. But I just think Star,Star sounds so much better live than on GHS.
the only bonafide classic on the entire album.
Not a fan of GHS Gazza?
Oh, I like it just fine - but its undoubtedly a step or two down in quality from what theyd done on the four albums that preceded it. Sticky Fingers and Exile barely waste a note and are brilliant from first chord to last. It suffers by comparison. Then again, what album wouldn't?
I dont think its well recorded/mixed - thankfully the Virgin remaster and the Mickboy release are superior, and whilst its good that they're in an experimental phases, the results aren't always successful. Its a fine record, but I'm not so sure its a great ROLLING STONES record. Its no coincidence that by all accounts Jimmy Miller hit the wall as a producer when they were making it.
I think recent opinion on it has been kind to it because of the overall quality of their subsequent albums.
Most of the songs are good to very good, but a 'classic' to me is something that can be talked about in the same terms as Jumpin' Jack Flash, Gimme Shelter, Moonlight Mile etc. Most Stones albums around that time had about half a dozen songs in that category. 'Winter' for me is the only song on GHS that is comparable (and its absolutely brilliant - Jagger's singing is wonderful, Taylor's guitar playing is my favourite ever performance on record by him and the string arrangement is one of the most beautiful pieces of music on ANY song).
