Stones Exact Album Ratings ...by Ian
Dec 31st, 2008 at 2:13am
Alert Board Moderator about this Post!
I thought I'd make a list of Stones albums that are worthy of mention in a rating system of 1 to 100% with 65% being real poor, 75% flat and fair and 100 % being a Masterpiece / an out and out classic work  ..as a general scale. However 95 % and above could also warrant a "notable classic" in ratings.

*Note ...this ratings scale is some what based on "Stones standards". In other words an 80% Stones record rating, if made by another group may seem pretty decent where as for Stones standards it would rate as "eh, ..not terrible but they could of done much better". By the way anything 90% and above is considered a fairly strong record and 87%-89% are at least categorized as a"good" release.

It is important to realize as you look over them an album may have a fair rating but may of produced a classic song or two (such as for instance "It's Only Rock n Roll").  Others may get lower ratings but still had some good songs such as "Black and Blue".

*In other words this scale is an ALBUM scale, ...in rating the album over all and as a whole and I tried to make it as exact as possible.

Exile- 100 %
Sticky fingers - 97 %
Beggars - 96.5 %
Let It Bleed -100 %
Some Girls - 95.3 %
Tattoo You - 94.5 %
Undercover - 91 %
Bridges - 88 %
A Bigger Bang - 92 %
Voodoo Lounge - 93 %
Steel Wheels - 87.5 %
Goats Head soup - 88% (although it may not be totally strong GHS has always been my personal very favorite)
Black and Blue - 73 %
Dirty Work - 85 %
Its Only Rock n Roll - 88 %
Aftermath - 92 %
Between the Buttons - 88 %
Their Satanic Majesties Request - 71 %
Decembers Children - 91 %
Emotional Rescue - 79.5 %

I know some are really going to disagree with my ratings but this is my honest opinion.

*Special note: In honesty every one of these albums all have songs that are at least considered "good" or in which I like the song and several songs on lower rated albums should be remembered and given certain credit in a sense regardless of how low any of them happen to place. As well all of them are "listen-able" to me and can be enjoyed for what it was (because that is how authentic or at the very least  appealing The Stones and their music is). Sure several could be much better but none rank as complete garbage and that says quite alot spanning all those albums.

What are your ratings?

9      IT'S ONLY ROCK N ROLL  (1974)       7.64

My only comment on your list Ian, Satanic Majesties is too low.  It's way more interesting like Stones-by-numbers like Undercover or train wrecks like DW.

Ian - I think you missed a few pre-1966 albums. All of which are pretty good.

Ian

Eagles albums are 3%.

You crack me up, Ian.  A top loaded nominal scale and for some reason a dimensional unit, a percentage% no less, is tossed in.  When are you going to go metric, man?  Exile is 100 megawatts standard deviation from the mean!

erm...can't you at least list them in the proper order ?

You need bigger gaps too, like 95/100 for the Top 4 then down to 80, nothing ever came close after that, TY and B2B being the lights in the night.

In Reference to Gazza:

I like The Stones real early albums but that is as far as it goes. Nothing worth me referring to anyone in my opinion. The hits are what I enjoy most from the pre 66 era, in which some are classics. The only album as a whole that I really like a lot pre 66 is Decembers Children, which I rated a solid 91 %.

To All:

Thanks for the input. I expected to get laughed at so I was hesitant to even post this. Now I am glad I did.

i can pretty much agree with your list except i would switch iorr with bb.  also i would bump up black and blue a few notches.  other than that i would leave the list as is.

England's newest hit-makers was on the cover, I used to have it on vinyl, (I have yet to get it on C.D.) it's never available when I want to get it, from what I remember that's all it said, no The rolling Stones, just what I mentioned at the beginning, it is a great album, all those bluesy songs, my favorites I just want to make love to you, walking the dog, Honest I do, now I've got a witness, I'm a king bee, I actually love the whole album.
Platter I'm surprised, you didn't know their first album???
