Without a doubt, the best gig I saw THIS year, was the collaboration of Marty and The Stones.

Did y'all know that our dear Martha spotted Scorsese in Jan '06 at Madison SG on the stage scoping out stills? Oh yes she did....the result MAGIC.

Great in Imax.

Studying the video now.

A great project.

i can barely bring myself to say i appreciate it.
But as it's Christmas, i'll be generous and say, it's an enjoyable concert film.

You HONESTLY don't appreciate this project?

purely selfish, i know, but it's not what i wanted, from a Stones/Scorcese project.  you made a grown man cry

I wanted a carbon-copy of the great "No Direction Home".  Smiley

(i.e an updated Scorsese directed "25x5", type thing)

To be honest, I was expecting that as well. A documentary type of film, a narrative sort of thing.

it adds nothing to the latter-day Stones live DVD cannon.

It's all there and  it's all been done before (and better) in 'Four Flicks' and 'Biggest Bang'.

A boring over-indulgance.

The best cinema experience i've had in 2008???

...easy.

"Man On Wire".

the best film, the best documentary, the best piece of art, i've seen in a long, long time.

Yes.  Watched it last night.  Pretty great.

Shine a Light was, to me, waaaay too long, but its better and some of its worse moments were pretty illuminating and exciting.  Musically I think that Four Flicks was better, but as a visual document, there's nothing better filmed about the band but Gimme Shelter.

I feel the same way as Nasty habits, I enjoyed S.A.L. but I think Gimme Shelter is the best film of the Stones, it's a classic, everybody was doing imitations of Jagger & Richards after that, I've seen it about 40 times, I also really liked 25x5, which is not mentioned very much, has that ever been released on DVD? I know people have made their own DVD's of it, but officially?

i bet this concert live was outstanding.  i watch the dvd from time to time and like it a lot.  i think the filming was a bit to in your face tho.  i think they should have backed up a few feet.  and they should have filmed more of the back up singer as well as the bass player and the horn section.  like some people i didn't have a problem with the models in the front rows.  they could of had a few recent interviews of the band in the film too.  if that film is not rock and roll then i don't know what is.

Shit!

It was pretty good. The only time this year I even went to the movies. Might even rank in the top 20 gigs I saw this year and quite possibly ruined the real Stones live experience for me as there is no way it could even measure up. It's just impossible to get that close to the video screen at a Stones concert. Never bought the DVD, still afraid they are going to pull some bullshit like springing a deluxe version with even extra footage after I spend the money.

Is there anything better in the history of the world than Santa? Talk about consistency and brilliance the guy keeps on bringing his A game year after year.Plus he added China without bitchin or wanting a raise.Mick and Keith need not look further than Santa for some inspiration.

Not going to happen for two reasons

1) It's not the Stones' film and the decision wouldnt be theirs

2) Scorsese doesnt believe in 'directors cut' versions of his films. He insists on all of them having the same content as was in the theatrical release.

agree,
just another concert film..
the stones are ripe for a 'no direction home' or some kind of narrative retrospective -
but it would take a director with balls and not an acolyte.

Champagne & Reefer, Buddy Guy is killer. GREAT TUNE, watch his eyes, so intense.
All Down The Line, Ronnie is fabulous
SYMPATHY is beautifully done.

Seeing MICK up close and personal is worth every penny, considering the cost of a concert ticket, SAL is SO worth the bucks!

It's very very good IMO Scorsese is king of filmmaking and it shows.

Why is it than, the UK version gets the JJF multi-angle and the UK Blu-Ray gets 4 multi-angle songs(JJF, ADTL, SG and Far Away Eyes)

Bonus features on a DVD are one thing. An extended 'directors cut' of the theatre release of a movie is another thing entirely.

Scorsese has never done this and doesnt believe in it. When you even look at his previous ventures into rock music - The Last Waltz didnt contain any additional music on the DVD re-release a couple of years ago (even though there's probably about an hour of concert footage which doesnt appear in the film) and No Direction Home just had a few small bonus features.

The original films have always remained intact. Even 'Gangs of New York', which underwent substantial editing by Miramax much to Scorsese's chagrin, didnt benefit from a 'directors cut' when it went to DVD. So, its pretty unlikely that he's going to break the habit of a lifetime for what is one of his minor releases.

- While the film ("Gangs Of New York")  has been released on DVD and Blu-ray disc, there are no plans to revisit the theatrical cut or prepare a "director's cut" for home video release. "Marty doesn't believe in that," editor Thelma Schoonmaker stated. "He believes in showing only the finished film."

What more could he possible add, the only song from that night that is missing is HTW.  As far as archieved material, those of us that collect this stuff have just about everything.  No one other than us hard core fans really could care about the archieved material, for me SAL was just an incredible viewing of the boys 44 years later, maybe I'm jaded since I was lucky enough to go to this show.

More documentary footage - which, to be honest, was something I expected to take up a higher % of screen time. Especially when hearing in advance that Albert Maysles was given a role in assembling it.

Those of us who collect that stuff do indeed have most of what's in circulation - and there was very little archive footage in SAL that was new to me - but the film wasnt (and shouldn't be) aimed at collectors, so thats not really a big deal.

However, there's a huge difference in what's in circulation and what actually exists over a 46 year career.  When you ponder the latter, what we actually have seen and own is merely the tip of the iceberg.

I totally agree with that, I think the reality of them releasing what we want(and what is it really, just better versions of what we already have ?.  I would like to see a complete pro-shot indoor show of the 78 tour and maybe a better LA 75 or complete pro-shot Knebworth) there is just not the market for this stuff to ever see the light of day IMO only.  Time will tell, but I love em warts and all.  Long Live The Stones.

Knebworth's a weird one and it's a bit of a miracle that it circulates at all. I was actually one of the first people to get a low gen copy of it on video. It didnt come from a Stones source, but was 'borrowed' from the BBC archives.

The BBC shot an hour of it for news footage (maybe only a couple of minutes were shown in the broadcast that evening). A guy I used to trade with who worked at the BBC TV centre London paid a 'visit' to their library one evening, borrowed the master and made a copy of it before returning it. Quite a few videos from around that era were sourced in a similar way. The BBC's methods of storing their archive footage back in the early 90s when this circulated was very haphazard at best. Maybe it's not as easy to 'borrow' footage this way anymore!

Honestly,It´s not their best concert released on DVD
Buddy Guy saves the day,the Twins singing at the end of Faraway Eyes is priceless and Ronnie is on fire in All Down the Line,Far away Eyes and You Got The Silver.
That´s all...
I love this band but if they want to do a DVD please choose a concert from the first leg of the tour,I mean A Biggest Bang is worst than Shine a Light... Shit!

I listened to the whole SAL CD again, and my absolute favorite part is right after LIVE WITH ME, when MICK says
"I loved it!!!"
The way he says it is so damn hot!
I guess he enjoyed singing with Christina A ~ and an interesting pronunciation of her name too. Is that the British accent or Italian or Spainish accent or what???

I hated that Christina duet. I think Mick was just trying to save afce. She's half-Peruvian so he was prolly using a Spanish accent for her last name.

Personally I dont like either duet with Christina or Jack White. They cant do the songs right, Jack White sounds like a young child's voice compared to MICK's masculine voice! And he didnt sing in tune, and Christina sang out of time, they were just there for show for the movie! I wonder if it was MARTIN'S idea to have them in the movie. The only good guest is Buddy MOTHERGFUCKER Guy!

I totally agree. Those duets bug the shit out of me.  I dont' know why.

when i saw it on the imax screen the duets sounded great...lets just say the whole movie sounded great.  now that i own it on dvd and listen to it more with a critical ear, come to think of it the duets do kind of suck.  the loving cup one sounds hurried and bitch is right about there voices not matching.  i have to say i like the christina duet tho...out of time, tune or whatever it rocks, and i'm not just saying that because she's attractive.

Shit!
