Only someone who has never heard Otis could not love him.  What a loss.

Otis Redding was one of the ultimate all-time most soulful singers, songwriters and performers.  The 4-disc box set Otis! covers the essentials.  It is an irony of music history that his best-known song, the posthumous hit, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," is his least representative work.  Here's what Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead said about seeing Otis at Monterey Pop in 1967:  "I was pretty sure that I'd seen God onstage.  Otis looked to be 12 or 14 feet tall, stalking the lip of the stage like a caged tiger, just shooting lightning and sparks.  He was amazing!"  Of course, Bob was probably tripping.

Good lord, yes. Otis was the best. Hands down.

I LOVE that RSG video of the Stones doing "That's How Strong My Love Is". I remember reading that Brian cried when they were recording it in the studio.....so very moving.

Such a cold, terrible night when he died. I'll never forget hearing about it the next day....Sad

otis was the real thing...
and a country boy.
i love that his music incorporated not just southern gospel, but country..
porter wagner said otis was a great country singer - because he sang from his heart.

While it's not my favorite Otis song, I'm still fond of it -- it shows that he had plenty of new musical paths ahead of him. A fantastic singer, and a very creative guy too.
