I agree with you on Beck, Raconteurs, GnR, and Oasis.  To that I'd add the new AC-DC, the new Hank III, and the new Pretenders.

If I recall, it came out in late 2007 in Europe and early 2008 in the usa...

i completely forgot about DBT's... it was like one of the earliest released "new albums"  I  got last year. the new Bruce will be like that... and hopefully, finally a new Rancid album!!!

I just haven't had alot of time for the new Pretenders... it may be omitted only for that reason...

agree dig lazarus dig was good

also enjoyed Tex Perkins (he of Beats of Bourbon and Cruel Sea fame) and his Ladyboyz and their album No. 1s and No.2s - it is essentially a piss take on "soft rock" but a very funny one - basically cheesey 70's covers but some of the takes work on their own merit

I have to get that.

I have been working on an archival project all year so I haven't had time to listen to many albums. Bought the new Breeders and Mudhoney albums, and Kelli Ali's Rocking Horse (yet to listen to) and the Chapin Sisters but can't remember what else. Meant to buy the new Testament, Nick Cave and a bunch of others but never got around to it.

Day & Age by The Killers is my favourite new release of 2008.

Imo, it hasn't been a particulary great year for new releases. I suapect that could be more to do with me being a little out of the loop, though.

Back to the initial question however: Duffy's Rockferry is also sublime.

Catching her tomorrow at Brixton Acadamy. Should be a good 'un  Cheesy

Good call - the title track on S&S, in one review was described as having "Mick Taylor and Keith Richards' guitars" on it, and I agree.

I would love to cite Oasis' Dig Out Your Soul as being one of 08's great releases, but it isn't. The first 5 or 6 tracks are great - it then falls flat on it's arse.

Didn't pay a whole lot of attention this year.

Dig, Lazarus, Dig!! - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (By far and away the best album I heard released in '08)
Tell Tale Signs - Bob Dylan (loses focus on the second disc, but first disc is so good it's scary)
Celebration - Thomas Function (Alabama punk/folk up'n'comers with hooks galore.  Byrds meet Buzzcocks.  A Pdog Possibility.)
Don Cavalli - Cry Land (French wah wah rockabilly weirdness.  You may want to check this out macdaddy.)
Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Primary Colours (some fine ass Aussie garage-punk, another Pdogger and mayhap one for you, SIA.)
The Oh Sees - The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending the Night In  (psychedelic Spaceman 3 style art throb)
Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It (a better Al Green album than the Al Green album that came out)

I also dug moments on the new Randy Newman and the new Pretenders (that lead track is killer).  The album as a concept, though, continues to die.

Reissues

Link Wray - White Lightning (Unreleased LP from 1959 from master tapes!!!!  Not as good as the Swan stuff, but it's like if someone found perfect quality Stones Crawdaddy tapes from '62 or something.   Truly historic AND rockin'.  You get this mac?)
Mad Mike Monsters Vols 1-3 (Pittsburgh 60's dance party DJ playlists - a thing of stupid beauty)
Charlie Feathers Rare and Unissued Vols. 1-3 (Rare tracks from Memphis rockabilly legend - amazing.  Macdaddy heads up)
Hank Williams Unreleased Recordings (the vocals, the vocals!  HOLY SHIT!  Rarely heard his voice sound so good.)
Sixto Rodriguez - Cold Fact (early 70s Detroit folk/psych MASTERPIECE finally out of the hands of record collector scum like me and into the hands of anyone with twelve dollars.  So great.)
Charlie Pickett - Bar Band Americanus (Career best of by this criminally overlooked Florida cult rock and roller from the 80s - at its best it aspires to be Dylan fronting the Stones.  Never quite gets there, but is HIGHLY recc'd to Stones fans)
V/A - Calypsoul (comped from dozens of early 70s hotel Calypso albums from the various islands.  Very funky, very fun.)
Sir Victor Uwaifo - Guitar Boy Superstar (African guitar slinger wails like Jimi in the motherland.  Wild.)
Flesheaters - A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die  (Truly evil punk album from the 80s, remastered so you can hear the best use of vibes on a punk album ever.)
Rainman (Swedish Psych from the early 70s, again highly recc'd to Stones fans)
