Or was that Elvis?
Or was that Jerry Lee Lewis?
Or is it all just that same as it ever was?

Absolutely!
We get plenty of them here in New Orleans.
N.O. is one of the few cities in America where "gutter punks" don't get much flak.
Rolling Stone had an article on them a few years ago. These kids travel the country in rail cars, sleeping in empty houses, etc.
"Spanging" is one of their sources of income. "Got any spare change?"
They usually travel in small groups, and almost always have a dog or two with them.
The main reason for having a dog is to keep from being arrested for petty crimes like panhandling, loitering, etc.
When the police arrest one of these kids, they have to get the SPCA involved to take care of the animal, so the cops will usually overlook the petty stuff.
What a life, huh?

I'm going to say KEEF had a punk-rock attitude but not the punk rock musical style. I think the Ramones were the best punk rockers.

Yes, people DO dress like this especially in NYC and in NJ too. Everyday punk! Now it's accentuated by multiple tattoos and body/face piercings. Some people have large holes in their ears, it's scary looking!

Well, extremism is never a good thing. But as far as the music goes, one of my sincere regrets in life is that I didn't pay as much attention to punk rock when it was in its heyday. Prejudice and preconcieved ideas can blind you though.

Agreed. And fear! I thought some of them were downright scary looking. Big safety pins through the cheeks and all......the Sex Pistols looked pretty nasty to me.....

Didn't get into the music until much later. Maybe punk was before its time......? I still think that the Kinks "You Really Got Me" could qualify as the first punk song. And I LOVED it. Went out right way with my 95 cents to buy it on 45 in '64.

"Kick Out the Jams" by MC5 is often mentioned as the first punk song.

pdog you could be right ~ THE STONES WERE THE FIRST PUNK BAND! When all the other bands were clean cut and wore matching outfits, our boys were anti-establishment, the underlying theme of punk. MICK said in a book when their manager bought them matching jackets, they rebelled by 'losing them' right after the show. The Stones were always rebellious, and punk rock's main 'theme' was founded on rebelling against the social 'norm' and society in general and not being afraid to show it.  Not necessarily just KEEF, but ALL of the Stones, especially BRIAN, were pre-punk!

Much quoted by Freud (to explain the origins of whatever):

"In the beginning was the Deed"
- from Goethe's Faust, part I, scene 3

And now, this seems to be appropriate (for this topic and whatever else) :

"In the beginning was The Stones"
