Greetings, questions, and such

Hello, everyone!  Member 39 checking in--I was Member 39 of the original Stones fan club which I joined in 1965 and which cost (I believe) five shillings.  As a result of being in the original fan club I got an invite to the taping of Rock 'n' Roll Circus but couldn't go  Smiley--saw the band many times, though, starting with the Albert Hall show in '66, and also was at the Hyde Park free concert.  I was going to introduce myself in the thread in the other section, but nobody seems to have posted in it for months so . .

So, my questions.  Firstly, every time the page refreshes, it's filled with the birthday boy's mug and I have to scroll way down every time.  Is there a way around this?  And where are all the threads discussing the, y'know, Stones? Apart from the three pinned at the top, most of the threads seem to be on other bands.  Huh  Is there a section I'm missing or something?

Anyway--nice to be here!  Cool

Welcome, Aquamarine!

Wow, you will be a welcome addition to this board. What a great history of loving and seeing the Stones! So you were at Hyde Park to see that new guitarist Mick Taylor, huh? Exciting stuff.

Sorry there isn't much Stones talk going on. Maybe you can help to rectify that. The truth is we REALLY need a tour. Or even a solid rumour of a tour. Anything.

Anyway, welcome to the asylum. We are glad you're here!

Hi SweetVirginia, and thanks for the welcome.  Cheesy  Oh well, perhaps I could come up with some of my Stones reminiscences to bore you all with while we're waiting for something to happen!  (Not that I ever met any of them, I hasten to add, but I did see all three guitarists--just about, because Brian was nearly dragged offstage, and I had to sit on someone's shoulders before I was able to see at Hyde Park.  But it was just in time to see Mick read the poem and release the butterflies!)

Well, when I get more time maybe I'll post some thoughts.  Now, if I could only figure out how not to have to scroll way down every time . . .

Welcome, Member 39 (which would also be a cool handle).  So, as practically an OF (original fan), let me ask you:  What is your opinion of my favorite underrated Stones classic, "It's Not Easy"?

Hiya, Brainbell Jangler!

Well, I agree that is an underrated Stones tune, though not one of my absolute favorites as I tend to lean toward the more blues-based stuff, and that comes out of a period when they were becoming more "poppy," seemed to me at the time--but it's got a great melody.  I haven't actually listened to it for ages yet it's totally memorable.

OK, you talked me into it, I'm going to dig it out again tonight.  Wink

Just to explain why I'm now claiming to be from Louisiana, that's because since my days of the five-bob membership, I've become a dual-citizenship Anglo-American--I live in northern La. these days, but visit the UK often too.  (So, hi there, Edith Grove!)

Oh, and to make a long story short--Taylor.  Loved Jones (especially on slide), and Woody's pretty good, but the great thing about Taylor was that he turned out to be so incredible just when we were wondering if the band was on its last legs--and it turned out the best was yet to come!  Smiley

Well, hoping not to bore you all to death, I'll throw out a few memories from the very earliest days.  'Twas the very beginning of the British blues boom, and I heard I Wanna Be Your Man on the radio, bought it and then Not Fade Away, and lost my heart forever.  (I'm still a major blues fan, and heard about most of those guys initially because of the Stones.)  Plus, I lived about 20 miles from Dartford, where Mick and Keith were raised, so I felt we were, like, neighbors.  So I parted with the 5/- to join the fan club, and I received the glossy pics, and the newsletters, and I wrote to ask for autographs and they sent them--to this day, of course, I have no idea if they're genuine, but they looked real enough, and they weren't famous enough to make their signatures worth forging, I reckoned.  I collected a complete set of the Rolling Stones Monthly.  I became the penpal of a girl who was associated with the fan club and had met the band because she kept leaving apple pies outside their dressing rooms, which apparently they appreciated (I was way too naive in those days to know if she was really some sort of groupie!).  Finally my chance rolled around and I got tix for my first show, the Albert Hall in Sept. 1966, the day Have You Seen Your Mother Baby was released as a single.  Long John Baldry, Terry Reid and his band, plus the Yardbirds, and the Ike and Tina Turner Review were on the bill.  Then the Stones appeared, my heroes in the flesh at long last--I stood on my seat (center aisle, about row 20) and screamed like everyone else.  Embarrassed  Well, we did that then.  Embarrassed Embarrassed  A few songs into the show, some girls got onto the stage, grabbed Brian (who was wearing a groovy velvet regency-style jacket--the pic in my avatar is me at about that time in a corduroy pantsuit I bought in Carnaby St. that was supposed to look like it), and tried to drag him off--the cops leapt on stage, and the show was temporarily halted.  I remember Mick and Keith looking really shocked.  Anyway, they went off, and after a while the show resumed, and I continued shrieking . . . .  Roll Eyes  The only specifics I remember, I'm ashamed to say, are of what they were wearing, and how out of my mind I was with joy.

Well, the next time I saw them live, time had moved on, the band first had become more pop-oriented, then Jumping Jack Flash had come out, complete with that amazing video, all seemed headed in the right direction, then there were the trials etc., we lost Brian, I'd become a hippie--I'll get into more detail about that era at some point if you'd like.  Don't want everybody putting me on "ignore" just yet!  Wink

Aqua thanks for the info on Brian Jones. I am a die hard BJ fan. They came to St Louis in 1966 when BJ was still alive but I could
not go because I was only 16 or 17. I graduated from HS in 1967. I have not seen them in person. I almost did in 2005 when
they came back here, had tickets but I could not go (due to my disability) so I sold the tickets. If they come again, I will make
another attempt provided they come to the Scott Trade (or whatever it is) center and I can get decent tickets.  Everytime they
come here they sell out. So 2005 was the only real time I would have seen them for the first time.

I am interested in anything on the Stones you wish to share, early Stones if possible but does not have to be.
If you have any pictures of them during their early days or  anytime please share if you feel comfortable doing so.

Thanks again.

Aww, too bad you missed them.  Will keep my fingers crossed for you that they tour again soon and you get another chance.

I'll be happy to share my memories of the early Stones (and later Stones for that matter), though I'm afraid I don't have any pics of my own--wasn't even worth trying with the old Brownie box cameras, and I don't suppose it would have been allowed anyway--but I have many newspaper/magazine pics from those days, which I'll try to share at some point (many of them are still in the UK right now).

Nice stories. Good to have you here - always great to see a long time fan join up. It's an asylum, but you'll get used to it.

Dont get too discouraged by the non-Stones stuff - that tends to be the case when there's no band activity, and it should be easy enough to ignore. When there's a tour on, we have live setlist and photo updates for example, and pretty up to date news info, but of late there hasnt been much to report.

The easy way round it that Some Guy refers to, though, applies to everyone !

Greetings & Welcome Aquamarine, thanks for the imput about the Sept. '66 Royal Albert Hall concert, I saw a video of this (have you seen your Mother, etc playing as soundtrack) looks like a wild concert, were there 2 concerts there or just 1? I wonder whatever happened to Terry Reid, he also played on some concerts of the '69 tour, anyways Welcome aboard.
