No Mail. No Banks. Just wondering what other countries celebrate Columbus Day.

1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue....and all that.

The so called "Voyages of Discovery" are quite fascinating to me. These guys were either brilliant or desperate. Or both.

Cool. I know that nowadays it's more politically correct to make a case as to how the Europeans exploited the Indians, but as with most human endevour, its a mixed bag of good and evil. Sympathy for the Devil and all that. But Columbus is kind of over rated. The history of the Portuguese trying to get around the Horn of Africa to India is more exciting I think. Anyway the Dutch stole it from the Portuguese, who in turn got ripped off by the English. Anyway....James Clavell's books, Shogun, Tai Pan,
Noble House etc are just loaded with interesting historical facts.

The white man brought firewater to the New World natives and the rest is history - for it is written not by the winners, but by those that can hold their mud.

Columbus, of course, never made it to the modern United States, only to Hispanola.  He later lived there as a tyrannical governor.

Why again does he have a holiday?

Because the events surrounding his accomplishments were of massive historical significance and he played one of the most visible roles in shaping the world culture we live in now.  Landing in Hispaniola was larger than landing on the moon.  There are very few other events in human history with the same importance.  That's pretty much why he has a holiday.

OK, I'll buy that.  The significance wasn't that he got there, but that he stayed.   I'm just saying that personally, he was a nasty piece of work.

You liberals can go ahead and laugh, but its a bust fact that a society's use of alcohol is tied to its progress.  Look at the Islamic countries, ffs.  Look at the Mormons.  They moving backasswards like a rotary tendril.
