Brussels affair has been in my car for the last 4 weeks and I can't get enough of it. It's perfection in every way. Mick Taylor's tone is unreal with his never-ending sustain. The solos on YCAGWYW and Gimme Shelter give me goosebumps everytime.

And Rambler...god damn that's one heavy version. The jazzy drums and grooving rhythm section is hypnotizing. And when everything slows down and it goes into the classic blues riff with Mick doing the call and response, that's heaven right there.

I can't believe they never released it. It beats Ya-Yas imo.

The version of Midnight Rambler - and especially the mid section where Mick whips the crowd up into a frenzy - is unquestionably the greatest recorded piece of music of the Stones' entire career.

In fact, it may well be the greatest live performance of any song in the history of popular music.

Performance wise, its as near a perfect show as you'll get. That said, I think the performance from London on 8th September during the same tour is every bit as good.

...which highlights much of the problem with the album they were touring behind.

On GHS, Mr D wouldnt scare a three year old. The live performances of the GHS songs on the '73 tour were in the main like night and day compared to the studio versions.

well, I havent seen the DVD as it hasnt been released yet here - just saw it once in the cinema.

Wasnt overly impressed with SAL either as a movie or as a performance although it did have some wonderful moments musically and visually.

"Champagne and a Reefer" is excellent, although theres no other performances on it that I thought were on the same level. Most are solid enough without being unspectacular, although there's one or two that are dreadful ("Far Away Eyes" for example).

"Biggest Bang" may have been a bit long and doesnt hold together as well as "Four Flicks" did, but it has a few truly magical performances, especially "Learning The Game".  One of my all time favourite Stones moments.

THE BEST VERSION OF RAMBLER ,IMO,IS HBO(OR 4 FLICKS)2003 AT MSG.IT'S REALLY FANTASTIC.
SHINE A LIGHT HAS SOME GREAT MOMENTS LIKE IMAGINATION,JJF,SHATTERED,SOME GIRLS, BUT LOVIN CUP AND FARAWAY EYES ARE HORRIBLE,IMO.IT WAS NICE TO SEE THAT THEY REALLY PUT A LOT OF EFFORT INTO IT THE MOVIE AS A WHOLE.

The version of Midnight Rambler on Brussels 73 is awesome
and the best second version of this song is Saitama´s 2006

I still can't believe they opened that show with Midnight Rambler.  The air in the place must have grown utterly rank as every fan at the Enmore collectively shit themselves.

Musically speaking, there is no better of Rambler I've heard than Brussels.  The musical interplay is amazing, particularly in the slow section - anyone claiming that Taylor and Richards didn't have some kind of interlocked musical minds on stage is nuts.   But sometimes I think I prefer the brutality of MSG '72 - this is after all a song about brutality.

There are shows I prefer to Brussels because they're wilder, but all in all these are the Stones most awe-inspiring performances as musicians.  And to anyone who thinks Angie is a lame song - does that include the Brussels version?  The Brussels version made me able to hear every other version of this song with open ears.

i agree with Rambler MSG 02' being awesome, some amazing licks and guitar interplay between Keith and Ronnie on this version, plus Mick's blues voice and harmonica being at their best  will ya 2
Brussels Rambler is played at a slightly faster tempo than usual, but it drives the song more, and hence is more thrilling than the MSG 69 version for example

I think Brussels is the best bootleg concert CD ever, by any band

To paraphrase what McCartney said about his first band, name one better!

no your not. your comparing a band at the height of its powers who, at the time,  bestrode the world of rock and roll like a Colossus with a band who have become almost a nostalgia act, a parody of their former selves, purveying homogenized versions of songs all (well almost all) over 25 years old
