I heard the '78 season is coming out on DVD, if it's not out already.

Why do I always feel so damned old???

I was at a Punk Bar in Buffalo that was ahead of it's time and had a big screen TV used for videos at the time.
Videos were stopped and SNL was shown.

The entire bar was jammin and I was leading the cheers!!!!!

I took a lot of frat boy heat for that ear-tongue thing. But still, they were fun. They also appeared in a couple of skits.

SNL was a one off.
The US Tour had ended in July.

Mick's voice was definitely hurting though.

Dan Akroyd has said many times that the coke was flowing like water on the set the week that the Stones were in NYC for rehearsals, and even in the moments right before the performance. Jagger was coked to the gills and it did a number on his voice.

it was bullshit behavior from mick as far as i'm concerned...he was being a complete egotistical idiot and it was a stage antic.  i am very glad those days are over and long gone.

The "long tour of the USA" consisted of about 25 shows in 7 weeks and had ended on 26th July - almost 11 weeks before they did SNL. Hardly a cause for laryngitis in October.

His voice was shot as a result of too much 'partying' all week with Belushi, Aykroyd and co.

still, at least it hadnt TOTALLY gone - unlike Marianne Faithfull when she made her infamous apperance a year or so later.

Strange performance vocally by Mick. It starts off not too bad, but his voice is a total croak by the time they were finished. Didnt they do 3 songs back to back without a break? (thats how it is in any copy I've seen) which is unusual for that show. Cant have done his voice any favours.

A bit OTT in parts but at least, 9 years after their last US tv appearance and 11 years after the "let spend some time together" sell-out, Mick got his own back by getting to say "fuck" on live TV....

so you must have recorded it on vhs....no?

i have the snl show and the week they were rehearsing up to the show all on one nice dvd...its about one hour and a half long.  it was transfered from vhs to dvd and every once in awhile you see those annoying vertical lines on the tv screen....know what i mean?

You funny!  VHS was in its infancy and barely available at even college libraries at that time.  I too stayed up to watch---what a bummer.  I took a lot of shit the following Monday from those I told "don't miss it".

Probably a rerun?

although if you have the rehearsal (which wasnt broadcast) and the actual broadcast on one DVD, theyre obviously taken from separate sources and werent recorded by the same person.

If you watch the rehearsals of the show, Jagger's voice is in good shape.  It must have been frustrating for him to blow his voice out just before the show.  Even in the Tom Snyder sketch, you can hear how hoarse his voice is.

i checked out what i had last night and what i have is...it looks to be some person with a hand held camera [on a tripod because its not shaky filmed] recording the stones during the rehearsals for their snl performance...its pretty cool to see the progression throughout the dvd...there are 2 sections to this dvd and it lasts about an hour.  i am not sure if it is available out there but to me it definetly feels bona fide boot leggy.  i have another on which i think i have heard people talk about before and that is the for worth's texas 4 song set...well at the end of this i have 2 'bonus songs' if you will and then the 3 song uninterupted from the snl performance.  i can't ask glencar to rattle off a billion copies of these 2 dvd's  but it would be nice to send a few out to say 10 people...its up to him really because i think maybe i can trust this dude.

You rock!

A story told at NYU in the period:  Somebody's relative was a cameraman on SNL.  Some months after the Stones appearance, Somebody showed the relative a still photo of the Stones and asked for anecdotes.  Two were:

*That a large bag of substance was available for dipping during the rehearsals, and that, to the cameraman's horror, spoons weren't even used, "they just kept stickin' their fingers in."

*That "This guy [indicating defendant Richards] was all over Laraine Newman and wouldn't leave her alone."
