I Fought the Law - good choice, I was listening to that last night (Clash and original) and thinking what a perfect song it is.

JJF is probably the best song ever.

Others:

Just My Imagination (the real one, not the Stones miserable version)

Heart of Gold

Sweet Jane

Jailhouse Rock

The Real Me

Knockin' on Heaven's Door

As much as I love The Clash and like their version of I Fought the Law, its far from my favourite song of theirs - Fuller's version isnt the original actually. Sonny Curtis wrote it for the Crickets (after Buddy Holly had died, that is) and they did it first.

It has a delightful history. Fuller died in suspicious circumstances just after it came out, when he apparently went for a ride in his car with a few mobsters and ended up with petrol being poured down his throat. The US Marines also blasted it repeatedly when smoking out Manuel Noriega.

Great call on the Temptations' "Just My Imagination". I love the Stones' version on "Some Girls " though - just brilliant in it's own way. Doesnt surpass the original, however.

Jumpin Jack Flash (and Gimme Shelter) have to be up there too.

Wow, I'm suprised nobody here has nominated that David Allen Coe song.  Yinz know the one.  I would have laid money on it.

"Cum Stains On My Pillow" ? That one?

Certainly one of the more poignant love songs I've ever heard!

No, that DAC song was "You've Never Even Called Me By My Name" by Steve Goodman.

Yes, Gloria is another great pic, as is Anarchy.

Not a Bowie fan, but Young Americans is a song that is just too damn cool.

i dont think you can pick a best song ever, beacuse of differing tastes etc

but as far as best stones song, its got to be Satisfaction, just the lyrics, the whole thing about consumerism, the first ever mention of menstruation in a song, the song in general, but specifially the riff, thats an amazing riff

my 'vote' goes for that it has to be their best song

also, ppl are nominating very obvious ones, i'd say

i got a right by stooges (and many more bests search anyone? rubber legs?)
one more cup of coffee by dylan (and about a billion more by dylan)
the spy by the doors (again, among loads of others)
stay with me by faces (the guitar at the start, and rods voice, just blow me away)
china girl by iggy (he has literally loads of amazing songs that characterise him and could be called 'best of')
manic depression by hendrix (or 1983, both great, again hendrixs doesnt really have a best of, well i suppose voodoo child)
moby dick by zeppelin
looking at you by MC5 (or kick out the jams mother fuckers!)
down by the river by neil young (as hard to find a definte best of as finding a dylan)
looking for a kiss by the new york dolls (that or personality crisis, vietnamese baby, subway train)
birdland by patti smith (that or land or free money)
city slang by sonic's rendezvous band (or electrophonic tonic)
dirt in the ground by tom waits (or that feel w/ keith richards - but again, like iggy, dyland and neil young, you just cant choose)
heroin by velvet underground (or venus in furs; defintily wouldnt choose sweet jane!)
the air near my fingers by white stripes

and if i can think of any more i'll post them

but i think, best song ever, by anyone?

Like A Rolling Stone
- Dylan

that has to be the best song ever ever by anyone ever
