Thanks Rogerriffin, opening and closing the 2016 LA tour threads! ["Olé Tour" and "Concierto para la Amistad"]

You rock my friend!

To be honest the vote:
  • Must be restricted to Cuban IPs
  • The song "Indian Girl" should be there!
Remember this thread is for the show including the song vote, for the Stones in CUBA prior to the show visit this one:

UNDERCOVER would have been best for Santiago or Columbia...Lost in the jails of South America...

And personally I think  it ridiculous that they even have a song vote for Havana...it is a bit of a slap in the face...knowing darn well that most Cubanos dont have internet or whatnot...even in these most progressive days...and with that choice, you know the fixed ballot will result in YGMR....though I hope I am proven wrong

Will the Cuban people even understand the term "song vote"? A bit of an oxymoron in a Communist dictatorship.  :blankfriggingstare1

YGMR will be played and it will suck in Cuba just like it sucked in Buffalo. Blech.  :wtf3

By on line broadcast he means webcast

Forget about periscope this time, download the new APP and you will get a live stream to watch the show

I posted that on the Cuba thread and on our Facebook page, will repost here

Hey there! This is my first post here on Rocks Off. So let me start by apologizing in advance for my lack of tech-y skills ...hang in there with me please. Next up...thanks for having me! I'm excited to be part of this community...I met some of you in Mexico City last week and I was impressed with the level of fun and heart and just HAD to be a part of it.
OK...here come the stupid and possibly redundant questions...
Cuba tonight...Stones app? On my phone (with my 47 year old eyes?) I'm a bag of nerves thinking I may miss this. Someone throw me a bone. If it IS only through the app, is there a way to view it on my slightly larger laptop? And does tequila work for a Cuba show or do I need to switch to rum tonight?
Thanks for any help, input or heckles. Soon I'll figure out the fancy avatars and color choices. Right now I'm patting myself on the back for successfully (?) posting.
Smell ya later
Alicia

Emotional Rescue thoughts? Not sure exactly what your question is asking. BUT as far as the song goes...oh wait...is this a newbie test? I'll hang back on my answer for fear of alienation from square one. Clarify and I'll answer. Already giddy on a Friday afternoon. Smell ya later.

Peachy Darling...you are right...a newbie test...
but a sincere question...exactly what you thought...
What are your thoughts on THE ALBUM ER?

Our lovable SOME GUY asks everyone who joins these here boards...it's his ACID TEST...it actually begs to ask...does SOME GUY actually keep everyone's response filed away to use against them in the future...is he our very own RocksOff version of J Edgar Hoover???

Your answer requires no particular response...(or does it...MWAH HA HA HA!!)

And BTW everyone...HAVE AN AWSOME EFFIN GREAT TIME IN OLD HAVANA TONIGHT!!!

I will be hosting a sleep over for my Glimmer Twins and checking in to see if they play Indian Girl for old Fidel and his brother Raul tonite!!!

Thanks for the clarification! And here goes (although I'm supposed to be making dinner)... Emotional Rescue coincided with puberty for me.  It's not my favorite album but it's the album that hooked me. I'm a HUGE sucker for Mick's falsetto (and Voodoos big smile!). It was the first album I bought (on vinyl, at Sam Goody, with hard earned allowance and babysitting money.) She's So Cold still "gets me"...I'm a dork. ER is my gateway Stones...I was born in 68 to a Mom that doesn't seem to care about music and a Dad who does. However, he leans towards Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, girls with raspy voices and old jazz (yay). One of those girls with raspy voices was Carly Simon...as soon as I heard You're So Vain I counted my Dad as "cool"...it took me ignoring his love for Bob Seeger. Now I'm rambling, as I often do. The question was simply...Emotional Rescue, thoughts? In a nutshell...I thank god for that album turning me on. OK. Do I pass? Happy Friday YO! OLE!!!!!
PA...are the girls your Glimmer Twins and are they really hunkering down at a sleepover just for some Stones? If so, I need to hook my 10 year old up with yours! Ruby needs to be pushed off the cliff. She likes (but still doesn't love) the Stones. I'm afraid to make Ruby rebel against me...but I remind her often that if she were born a mere hour earlier her middle name would have been Tuesday instead of Isabelle ;) And she does think the boys are in better shape than her grandparents who are the same general age.
Smell ya later.

War horses always get my blood pumping, and none more than that riff. It's their most wild song. Pure rock and roll. Only Mick and Keef could come up with something so tasty.

The Cuban box set should arrive some time around the holidays. I wonder if it will come with cigars!

Smell ya later.

nice...

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/live-reviews/rolling-stones-thrill-huge-crowd-at-historic-havana-show-20160326

In the recent series of monumental arrivals in Cuba — Netflix, Airbnb, a U.S. mpresident — none loos as large as the Rolling Stones, who played to an estimated 500,000 Cubans in Havana on Friday. On an island overlooked by time for more than a half century, the group became the focal point of life for at least a day. The iconic tongue logo sprouted up on T-shirts across Havana, and cabbies, bartenders and friendly locals asked almost anyone, "Do you know the Rolling Stones will play tonight?" as if to confirm that the concert was indeed real.

Opening Sequence:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPYoR1EWkns

Not only was it real, it was free. In front of the Ciudad Deportiva de la Habana, there were no ticket touts or T-shirt vendors. For a convertible peso you could get a cone of popcorn or a bootleg Stones CD outside the gates. Men in traditional green military uniforms were present but unnecessary despite the charged atmosphere leading up to Cuba's largest concert ever.

The Stones kicked off the night with the staple "Jumpin' Jack Flash." The crowd — mostly flying Cuban flags, but Mexican, Argentinean and the Union Jack made appearances as well — gave an appreciative cheer when Jagger greeted them in their native Spanish, in between "It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)" and "Tumbling Dice." "This is a new time," Jagger observed to roars from the crowd, a nod to the Stones' once-outlaw status in the country.

After crisp takes on standards "Angie" and "Paint It Black," Keith took over on vocals for "You Got the Silver," with his counterpart Ronnie Wood adding the slide-guitar parts. Relishing the moment with the spellbound crowd, Keith said: "Maybe I'll just stay here forever." Mick rejoined the band for an extended jam out on "Midnight Rambler," which featured Wood and Richards exchanging fiery licks. Without concession stands, the usual beer-run-shuffle was noticeably absent, but the rapt audience wasn't going anywhere anyway.

A dozen songs in and the Stones cranked up the energy with an impassioned "Gimme Shelter." Jagger's vocals carried the night in many places, but at no point was he in better form than as he traded lines with singer Sasha Allen on the classic anthem. Cuban communism might be losing steam, but over an hour into the show it was clear that Mick Jagger is not.

© Alexandre Meneghini

"Start Me Up" and "Sympathy for the Devil" followed in short order. The Stones closed with "Brown Sugar," which saw the throngs around the stage — most of whom were born after the Stones' heyday — fist-pumping in a manner more associated with EDM than rock & roll. The lights dimmed, and the crowd broke into a chant of "Olé" to pull Jagger and Co. back onstage for an encore.
As they often do, the Stones called on local choral talent to open "You Can't Always Get What You Want," while Jagger showed that two hours of balmy 80-degree Havana weather was having scant impact. They closed with "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." That the crowd nearly beat Jagger to the refrain suggests that the pirated music community has been thriving during the past five decades in Cuba. For all the talk of the Stones' first visit, the show felt more like a reunion of long lost friends than a first date.

The Stones took their final bow, and the audience took a deep breath. This was no ordinary concert. People hugged and shared looks of disbelief. Coming at the end of a run of shows in South America and Mexico, last night might have marked at least a temporary pause for the legendary group, but it had all the markings of a new chapter for music in Cuba.

besides, no one really expected any periscopes from the start...

Anyway...this non-monumental, non-epic, yet historical show is over...back to the death notices...NHL playoffs, and of course Joey!

Ha... ... in seriousness I wonder if they wrote stuff while on tour.. or how they are going to do this. The way I see it if they want it out this late fall they have about 3 months to record it and 6 weeks to mix it .. if they want this thing out in November...  (that's not a lot of time, really ...but it can be 'sufficient'.. if many things or a big portion of it is written or  is ready to go. As well they did some stuff before the tour .. or at least got a lil start on it).

Read that  and found some interesting logic. Stones got their 7 million of course. I can see the concert as an HBO special sometime in the fall. As far as the politics Cuba not much different than China or any other dictatorship. Long way to real change for the average Joe and of course its always about the $$$

Meet the lawyer who paid for the Rolling Stones concert in Havana

Curaçao’s Gregory Elias says the show was about having fun, not politics

By some accounts, it cost $7 million to bring the Stones to Cuba

And they STILL didn’t play his favorite song

BY GLENN GARVIN
[email protected]

Gregory Elias finished his pitch, paused, and waited for the little beep-beep-beep in his ear that would signal that the party on the other end of the telephone —Jayne Smyth, the manager of the Rolling Stones —had hung up after realizing that he was a madman. At best, he thought, he might get a shouted answer that would reveal which part of his proposal was loonier — that the Stones do a concert in Cuba (where not so long ago, listening to rock and roll was a jailable offense) or that they do it for free.

Instead, there was a long pause. “Well, that’s certainly a unique proposal,” Smyth finally replied. “Let me get back to you.”

That seemingly inauspicious and slightly weird conversation last Nov. 13 turned out to the beginning of a complicated trans-Atlantic negotiation that would eventually bring the world’s most venerable (and wealthiest) rock band to communist-ruled Havana last week for a free concert that drew, by some estimates, half a million fans.

Elias, a wealthy corporate lawyer in Curaçao who funded the concert through his charitable trust, still can’t quite believe his call to the Stones worked. “I mean, who in heaven’s name am I?” he said Tuesday, recalling the conversation. “I didn’t expect her to call back. But 24 hours later, she did. And it was a go.” Attempts to reach Smyth for comment were unsuccessful.

Because the concert took place the same week as President Obama’s historic visit to Cuba, the first by an American president since 1928, it’s been widely assumed that the timing and preparation were somehow linked. But Elias says it was all a coincidence triggered when he read the news that the Stones were launching a five-week tour of Latin American in early February.

His Baby Boomer love for big rock festivals like Woodstock, and his knowledge that Cuban officials were already searching for cultural exchanges to open the island up, gave Elias the idea to reach out to the Stones. And Elias had some connections through an annual Curaçao jazz festival that his foundation funds that has included acts like Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys.

But until Smyth called back, 24 hours after his first contact, to say the band wanted to do it, Elias had no idea just what a complex undertaking he had launched. “When the boys — that’s how Mrs. Smyth calls them —when the boys go on tour, what they put together is completely out of this world,” he said. “It is the best and it has to be better than anything else. The production team had to start thinking how to make this possible.”

Cuba’s blighted economy barely can turn out basic necessities, much less all the gadgetry and ephemera necessary to produce the technological circus that is a modern rock concert. Practically everything, from light towers to bottled water, had to be obtained elsewhere and flown in.

The Stones themselves agreed to do the show for free, but all those suppliers had to be paid. Rolling Stone magazine reported the concert cost $7 million to stage. Elias won’t talk about the financial details — “Please don’t ask me indecent questions,” he said in a stern voice before breaking into giggles — but agrees it “wasn’t cheap” for his Fundashon Bon Intenshon to pick up the tab. (Some of the bills may be paid from sales of a DVD recording of the concert, which will go on sale later this year.)

Compared to the financial side of the concert, Elias said, the political negotiations were simple, though time-consuming. Officials of the Curaçao government helped him iron out details with the Cuban ministers of culture, finance and economics. Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, a vice president of the Cuban council of ministers, the country’s cabinet, was also involved in the negotiations — but Raúl Castro was not, so far as Elias knows.

What problems came up, Elias said, were less ideological than generational. “I remember one elderly gentleman —I’m not going to give you his name —who, when we started the negotiations at the governmental level, said, ‘The rolling who?’” Elias said. “He had no idea what we were talking about or who we were referring to.”

It may not seem obvious why a Curaçao charitable foundation or its attorney benefactor would spend all that time money on a free concert for Cubans, but Elias says there were no hidden political or economic motives to the concert. “I’ve never done any business there,” he said. “Never. I visited there during the 1990s, but that’s all I did, visit.”

The only agenda he had, Elias said, was to do something nice for the Cuban people, who haven’t had an easy time of it for the past few decades.

“If we consider it from a Western point of view, from the outside looking in, the people of Cuba miss a lot,” he observed. “I thought it would be nice to approach them with music. Music doesn’t create envy or animosity, it just creates love and understanding.”

Though Elias did feel one teeny, tiny spark of animosity himself during the concert. The Stones didn’t play his favorite of their songs, Far Away Eyes. It seems that even when you’re picking up the tab, you can’t always get what you want.
