Topic: Anybody here like...The Who??? Return to archive Page: 1 2 3 4
November 5th, 2005 10:40 AM
Jair I think its one of by biggest faults: I havent any The Who record. None. No one. Nada. Zero.

Back in seventies I had the vinyls Quadrophenia and Who Are You.

Then, when I started to buy CDs I gaveaway most of my vinyls and those The Who were gone.

Some days ago I was watching CSI & i thought could be a good alternative spend some money in The Who records.

Should I start for which record? suggestions?

Thanks.

Have a nice sat.

wisertime 1)"Who's Next" (71) or a good compilation like "Then And Now" released last year (with 2 good tracks of 2004)
2)"Live At Leeds" (72)

November 5th, 2005 11:00 AM
JuanTCB The soundtrack to "The Kids Are Alright" is a good starting point, too.
November 5th, 2005 11:45 AM
rolling who I loooooove The Who! 'Who's Next' is the greatest album ever created, IMHO, but you might want to invest in the excellent box set, '30 Years of Maximum R&B.' It's got most of their standards, many of their best deep album tracks, plus wonderful concert clips of Townshend shouting at audiences and Abbie Hoffman as well as comic routines by Keith Moon!
November 5th, 2005 12:00 PM
J.J.Flash Although I still don't own these, "Tommy" and "Live at Leed" are a must to have! You ain't gonna regret!

Best Who Yet!

P.s.: Ask Joey, as he's the ultimate Who frenzy fan!

MRD8 Earlier this year the 4Reels bootleg DVD label famous for the best version of the Stones Ladies & Gentlemen DVD released The Who Houston Summit 1975 that is one of the five top live concert video's EVER in my opinion! To have a complete Who concert when they were in their prime with Keith Moon is amazing...it makes me wonder where it had been for the past thirty years...

sirmoonie The Who!

You can't do The Who by greatest hits, Jairie. You need them all.
November 5th, 2005 01:53 PM
Soldatti Best ROCK band after the Stones.
November 5th, 2005 01:53 PM
time is on my side First of all you have to buy their best studio album which would be Who's Next one of the greatest ever type albums. A true classic.

Then you got to buy one of the greatest live albums ever made or released- Live at Leeds.

After that, you also have to buy one of the best greatest hit's collections ever put together- Meaty, Beaty, Big, and Bouncy if you can find it or get The Ultimate Collection which has all the songs on Meaty, Beaty, Big, and Bouncy plus much more.

Then there's one of my personal favorites The Who Sell Out........

Well, I almost forgot- you also have to buy the two concept albums which The Who are known for (Tommy and Quadrophenia- I prefer Quadrophenia which is a great & essential album but love the first side of Tommy which translates very well on stage)

Well, Jair, you can buy these if you want but believe me you won't be thanking Joeykins later. "Face Dances" and "It's Hard" were the one-two punch that put the Who into their creative coffin.

The Who Sell Out
November 5th, 2005 04:35 PM
Ronnie Richards BTW, Live at Leeds has been released as a two-disc "deluxe edition" where disc 2 contains the complete live renditon of Tommy. Essential stuff.
November 5th, 2005 05:25 PM
time is on my side Also in the deluxe edition of Who's Next, the concert from rhe Young Vic recorded on April 26, 1971(great concert) is included. More essential stuff.
November 5th, 2005 05:44 PM
Gazza Quadrophenia is every bit as great and indispensable as Who's Next

The Who By Numbers is a greatly underrated album which every home should own

Theres also a new 2-CD Townshend compilation released last month which you should pick up
November 5th, 2005 06:20 PM
Prodigal Son What I find ironic is that with all the excess Lifehouse material on singles and official boots, Who's Next actually would've made a great double album:
ORIGINAL
1. Baba O'Riley
2. Bargain
3. Love Ain't for Keepin'
4. My Wife
5. The Song is Over
6. Getting in Tune
7. Going Mobile
8. Behind Blue Eyes
9. Won't Get Fooled Again
POSSIBLE SECOND DISC
1. Let's See Action
2. Join Together
3. I Don't Even Know Myself
4. The Relay
5. Time is Passing
6. Pure and Easy
7. Too Much of Anything
8. Water
9. When I Was a Boy
10. Baby Don't You Do it

Meanwhile, I feel that Quadrophenia would've been better as a single LP. Then again, the story would've been much harder to figure out. But there are lots of songs that are either unimaginative or sound similar to the others ("I've Had Enough," "Dirty Jobs," "Helpless Dancer," and "Sea and Sand" were the least enjoyable of the bunch).
November 5th, 2005 06:29 PM
Gazza I think they're MEANT to sound like each other - theres several recurring themes throughout the record

the story simply wouldnt have worked as a single LP.

Besides, everything about Quadrophenia is linked by the number four

4 band members, 4 personalities (hence the title), 4 themes, 4 sides...
November 5th, 2005 10:25 PM
Highwire Rob Jair,

If you want to maximize the hits get the 3-disk ULTIMATE COLLECTION as suggested by Time Is On My Side. The third disk is a bonus with 3 or 4 alternative tracks including Happy Jack & Magic Bus.

But the bastards never give "Athena" any respect to put it on a Greatest Hits. "Athena" is brilliant and one of my favorites--I know resident Who specialist, Joey will agree with me. So get IT'S HARD as well, or just download "Athena" so you're not duplicating songs like "Eminence Front."

November 5th, 2005 10:38 PM
sirmoonie May as well mention Odds and Sods - essential. Get the re-mastered version with all the very worthwhile bonus tracks. Put the money down, Jairhead! Put the money.... dowwwwwnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!! In a tin cup. Put it down.
November 6th, 2005 05:40 AM
geecee I would start with Who's Next and Live at Leeds (the bootleg ''live at leeds complete'' is a better set than the official one,no editing). Who by Numbers is a terrific album , as is the essential Quadraphenia.Damm they are all classics (well maybe not Face Dances or Its Hard)

I absolutely LOVE The Who. Over-all, if I had to choose a second, I honestly think they would be my second favorite band of all of them.

I hate to say it but The Who of later decades is really undersnuff. We all know that. The world knows that. But from the sixties to the late seventies they were super. They put the hard in hard Rock.
Since then they have been more let-down than anything and have been a nostalgia act for like 20 years now but for the time they did have they were definately my second favorite.

Agree 100%. You forgot Put The Money Down and Naked Eye, though. And while we're dreaming, why don't we have the Who cut Mary and Greyhound Girl and put them on too (though the latter sounds a lot like Getting In Tune.)

I'm a huge Tommy fan too. Put that on your list, Jair.

Madafaka I'm not a The Who big fan, but I got some cds and dvds. Is an excellent rnr band!

Zack Your loss, dude.

BTW, Prodigal Son, Sea and Sand is one of my favorite songs of all time! "I'm dressed up better than anyone within a mile." You sell that baby short.

Jumpin Jack - you have all those DVDs? Damn, that's impressive!
