It's true that message boards came first. Those were earlier forms of social media, but a bit more exclusive. Most message boards were geared towards specific audiences or topic. Social media sites can include anybody. That may have been more attractive to the mass population and caused those sites to boom in popularity and use.
One of the things that makes some social media sites unattractive to me (especially the king of them all, facebook) is the lack of anonymity and the limited privacy. Here, no one knows my real name unless I tell hem, so good luck trying to stalk me without even that tidbit of info.
I try not to be as paranoid as that might sound, mind you. It's not like I never trust anyone and never tell anyone my name. I've even given a few people my phone number, though only to 2 people on Rocks Off (and my number has changed, so pm me if you want it).
