Seems the talk of a possibility that Hanging Rock could be rescheduled has gone quiet. That plus the fact that refunds have already been made somewhat seals it.

Anyway, this means that next up is Auckland on Saturday, which will be the final Rolling Stones show of 2014.

The fanvote is already up on the website, and the songs are :

  • Some Girls

  • She's So Cold
  • All Down the Line
  • Street Fighting Man
  • Like a Rolling Stone

Ahead of the show, The New Zealand Herald's main gossip columnist reminisces on her encounter with Mick when the Stones last visited in 2006

I never held out hope for Hanging Rock. It's a real shame a lot of fans there won't be seeing them.

Would probably have been the most visually stunning location for a gig on the entire tour too, and perfect for filming.

I was really looking forward to that 45 seconds of 'Tumbling Dice' that would have been uploaded to the official YouTube page!

That statement about writing "Paint It Black" in Auckland would make sense, then - because right after the two shows there on March 1st 1966,  they flew to Los Angeles for the second and final "Aftermath" sessions - one of the new songs being "Paint It Black".

In fact, it seems they stopped over on Fiji en route and got a little bit more inspiration

We were in Fiji for about 3 days... They make sitars and all sorts of Indian stuff. Sitars are made out of watermelons or pumpkins or something smashed so they go hard. They're very brittle and you have to be careful how you handle them. Brian's cracked his already. And we had the sitars, we thought we'd try them out in the studio. To get the right sound on Paint It Black we found the sitar fitted perfectly. We tried a guitar but you can't bend it enough.

- Keith Richards, 1966

Who else would appreciate them as much as I do?????

I'm hanging on to Mick's words, Gazza, cause right now, I'm feeling very sad to see that final bow.

Great pics. Hope to see the Stones come to NYC next year.

Here's a short article - actually Bill Wyman's comments - on Stones in NZ in 65-66 with pics, courtesy of one Dean Goodman.

Concert review: Rock legends give satisfaction

Russell Blackstock
5:00 AM Sunday Nov 23, 2014

Fans of all ages fill Mt Smart Stadium for spectacular night to remember

...
Totally all right on the night, Ronnie, Mick, Charlie and Keith blasted a crowd of more than 40,000 right back down memory lane.Photo / Michael Craig

The Rolling Stones finally broke cover last night to rock New Zealand in spectacular style.

Mick Jagger and the band had laid low at their base at Auckland's Langham Hotel since slipping into the country on their private jet on Thursday.

But they emerged in style last night to lead more than 40,000 fans on a spectacular trip down a musical memory lane.

From Satisfaction to Brown Sugar to Jumpin' Jack Flash, a crowd of all ages lapped it up.

Frontman Mick Jagger took to Twitter from backstage at Mt Smart yesterday afternoon to thank the band's devotees.

"Looking forward to tonight's show in Auckland, just had sound check."

And from the moment Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ronnie sprang into action at Mt Smart it was clear they were going to make the closing night of their 14 On Fire tour a memorable one.

The Stones took to the stage just after 8.30pm and the crowd erupted when Keith Richards strolled on and launched into the opening riff for Start Me Up. Jagger followed with his trademark swagger and pout. Decked out in a blue silk shirt and sparkly jacket, he showed no signs of voice problems that dogged him recently in Australia.

"How ya doing ... you all right?" he yelled as the band blasted out It's Only Rock and Roll. Next came You Got Me Rockin'.

The music was still as intoxicating as ever, with crowd pleasers Honky Tonk Woman, Miss You, Midnight Rambler and Gimme Shelter.

The Stones initially finished with Brown Sugar, but were soon back for encores that included You Can't Always Get What You Want backed by the NZ Youth Choir and a show stopping version of Satisfaction, followed by the obligatory fireworks display.

Farewell, old friends

I first saw the Stones as an 18-year-old in Philadelphia on their Some Girls tour in 1978. I was in love with them long before that and have loved them since.

I went on to see them many times in my native Scotland and other places around Europe, including a memorable show at the old Olympic Stadium in Berlin in 1995.

Before the gig I was invited to watch Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood playing snooker backstage, complete with a fulltime referee who had been keeping the score for more than a year.

For many, last night was a lump-in-the-throat final farewell to the greatest band that ever graced and disgraced a stage; but the memories, just like the title of one of Stones' earliest hits, will not fade away.

- Herald on Sunday

In case you missed it, Mick made a fairly brutal joke at
Keith's expense to close out this tour.

Mick had a special t-shirt made up in Auckland to "honor"
Keith, and Keith liked it so much he wore it onstage all
night.

The image is a version of a famous portrait by Charles
Goldie of Maori warrior chieftain "Te-Aho-Te-Rangi Wharepu",
with Keith's face inserted.

The original is controversial because by the time the
portrait was done (in 1905) the subject was
no longer a warrior, but rather someone who
could only make his living by posing for tourists...

LOL! Good one Mick!

Incidentally, the subtitle of the original is "All'e Sam'e
t'e Pakeha", which means "A Good Joke".

Is there an article or a video of Mick saying he made the shirt for Keith? What's the source of this info? I'm curious!

And bring on South America and a return to North America please!

I'm going to have to call BS on the claim that Mick had the shirt made for Keith. There's a photo of a fan wearing it on IORR.

In case you missed it, Mick made a fairly brutal joke at
Keith's expense to close out this tour.

Mick had a special t-shirt made up in Auckland to "honor"
Keith, and Keith liked it so much he wore it onstage all
night.

LOL! Good one Mick!

Incidentally, the subtitle of the original is "All'e Sam'e
t'e Pakeha", which means "A Good Joke".

Do you really thing Jagger would put THAT much thought into a fucking t-shirt gag gift?!?

That is about 100x more thought than what is put into the set lists!!!

And Mick would have had to make one for the guy in the audience too.

It's a BS story.

Mick controls the merchandise. All Mick did was make
sure this design got made into a t-shirt for sale at the
show. That Keith got sucked in by it was just a bonus,
making the joke that much richer.

They're all humo(u)rists and humo(u)rologists, shirley, Rev.

I'm not sure the term 'brutal' is applicable.

Have you read Leacock, Freud, Aristotle and so forth on witzig, quiddities and jokey-poohing?

Did you read about this online, or are you making this up? Please site your sources.

The original sub title of the painting is quite different from your claims. The painter said the seated man was the finest and last example of the art of tattooing in that region.

yes and no.

yes, the original title/subtitle of the painting is
usually translated as "a good joke" or "a good laugh".

and yes, he was a once great warrior chieftain who was
reduced to posing for tourists when this portrait was
done.

but a story has appeared online about the commercial
t-shirt maker that says he simply did it because he
liked the painting and liked keith's face. period.

so yeah I guess the t-shirt joke was played on Keith,
not by Jagger, but by God.

sorry, i often get those two guys mixed up. similar
senses of humor.
