The Originals.......

This ain't got nothing to do with that show on the boob tube.

Have you ever wondered how many songs the Stones have covered?

Have you ever wondered what those covered songs sound like by the original artists?

Have you ever heard a song on the radio that sounded very familiar,
only to discover that you first heard it on a Stones album and never knew it was a cover?

Here's the thread dedicated to the tunes covered by The Greatest Rock 'n Roll (Cover) Band In The World.

Feel free to post your own favorite covers by the Stones as well as stories, trivia, comments, reviews or anything.

The original cover from June, 1963:

I like Chuck's version better.

Nice Thread, & great videos, when you think about it, the Stones have done a lot, lot of covers on their early albums, I think it was 'aftermath" that was the first album that had all originals Jagger/Richards.

How did this tune make it past those uptight censors of the Fifties & early Sixties ?

Under the Boardwalk - Kenny Young/Arthur Resnick

First performed by The Drifters

The song was set to be recorded on May 21, 1964, but the band's lead singer, Rudy Lewis, died of a suspected heroin overdose the night before. Lewis had sung lead on most of their hits since the 1960 departure of Ben E. King, including "Up on the Roof". Rather than reschedule the studio session to find a new frontman, former Drifters lead vocalist Johnny Moore was brought back to perform lead vocals for the recording.

"You Got to Move" is a traditional negro spiritual song about death coming soon, and slaves fleeing the Southern United States and/or being freed by death/reaching the promised land/paradise. As ever in such slave songs, double-entendres are difficult to figure out. A spirited version of it was recorded by the Blind Boys of Alabama on September 28, 1953. It was also recorded in 1965, twelve years later, by Mississippi Fred McDowell, to whom it was attributed by British rock and roll band The Rolling Stones, who more famously recorded it as "You Gotta Move" and featured it on their 1971 album Sticky Fingers.

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef

Blues legend Reverend Robert Wilkins' classic 'Prodigal Son' re-release

THE LEGENDARY song "Prodigal Son" written by bluesman Reverend Robert Wilkins, and once recorded by The Rolling Stones, has been released on a Wilkins album by Bear Family. The re-mastered album features tracks the bluesman recorded in the 1960s for Biograph and Piedmont Records. Rev Wilkins was considered one of the pre-war blues greats; in 1935 his wife became seriously ill and Wilkins offered his life to God in return for his wife's. His wife recovered and Wilkins became a minister and wrote the song "Prodigal Son", a reworking of his original recording "That's No Way To Get Along". In 1968 The Rolling Stones featured the song on their album 'Beggars Banquet' without crediting Wilkins. Later pressings of the album rectified the mistake and Wilkins belatedly received a measure of popularity before his death in 1987. The sleeve of the Bear Family release features a graffiti-covered toilet wall, a tongue-in-cheek homage to the 'Beggars Banquet' sleeve.
