Part 3: European Tour

2006 European  ‘A Bigger Bang’ Tour Overview

Following the final New Zealand show on April 18, whilst Mick and Charlie returned home, Keith and Ronnie travelled to Fiji for a break with their families.  About a week into the holiday, Keith went for a swim and while still wet slipped and fell from a low branch on a palm tree, landing on his head and cracking his skull.  A couple of days later following seizures and headaches, he was flown back to Auckland, New Zealand where it was discovered that he had a blood clot on his brain.  It was as if it was summer 1998 all over again, only this time it was more serious. Surgery to remove the clot followed and he wasn’t allowed to fly home until May 22nd, by which time the European Tour, scheduled to start in Barcelona five days later had been postponed until mid-July. The entire schedule was thrown into chaos with 13 shows being cancelled (several ended up being re-sold for 2007) and some others having to be rescheduled.  Mick didn’t escape unscathed either as two Spanish dates in mid-August were cancelled due to him contracting laryngitis. In the end, this leg ended up consisting of just 19 shows over six weeks.

The tour finally opened in Milan on July 11th – two days after Italy had defeated France in the World Cup Final – ironically the previous occasion when they won the trophy was in 1982 when the final took place a few hours after the Stones played a concert in Turin. The band debuted ‘Streets of Love’ and (more significantly) ‘Con Le Mie Lacrime’ – the ultra-rare Italian language version of ‘As Tears Go By’. At the following show in Vienna, they played five songs from ‘A Bigger Bang’ for the only time on the entire tour. Late August saw the band back in the UK for two shows at Twickenham stadium in London – the Stones’ original plans were to play at the renovated Wembley Stadium, but these fell through as the much delayed rebuild meant that the iconic venue wouldn’t be ready until 2007.  Keith wasn’t allowed to forget his mishap in Fiji by the audiences, several of whom waved inflatable palm trees in his direction throughout the tour – a bit of banter that he took in good humour.

There are no official releases from this tour leg. A very strong show in Glasgow on 25th August was broadcast almost in full (17 out of 19 songs) on BBC Radio a few days later and is the best document from summer 2006.  Also recommended are Paris, Amsterdam, and Twickenham 22nd August.

Number of concerts – 19

Number in circulation – 18 (only Bergen 1st September is missing)

Personnel – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood with Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Bernard Fowler and Lisa Fischer (backing vocals & percussion),  Blondie Chaplin (backing vocals, percussion & occasional guitar), Bobby Keys (tenor sax) and The New West Horns – Tim Ries (sax , Michael Davis (trombone) and Kent Smith (trumpet).
